The NBO (New Business Opportunity) is an innovative educational programme that fosters co-operation between academia and industry; in particular between students and experienced practitioners including their lecturers and industry coaches. The course culminates in the NBO Symposium, during which students of the Master’s programme in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology have the unique opportunity to present their in-depth analyses (covering the technical, economic and ecologi-cal issues in addition to the societal, legal and ethical considerations) of potential business ideas to a knowledgeable audience drawn from industry and academia.

The main objectives of the NBO Symposium, which uniquely demon-strate mutually beneficial relationships between research, business and education, are:

• To provide students with the opportunity to present their analyses,

which represent six months of thorough analysis, to a well-infor-

med audience and to network with the symposium participants.

• To give entrepreneurs, who have successfully established their

own business, the opportunity to share their personal experiences.

• To promote the NBO Programme as a model for future-oriented,

transformative teaching and learning, and expand the pool of its

supporters across both industry and academia.

• To discuss the job profiles of tomorrow and identify competencies

that students of biotechnology need to develop in order to suc-

ceed in their careers.

The topics selected for analysis in 2016/17, encompassing biotech- nological innovations for cosmetic, pharmaceutical and software/de-vice markets, were proposed by representatives of industry and reflect current industry needs and market drivers.
