Questions to think about:
What are the different motivations for engaging with the private sector and how does this influence CARE’s strategic approaches?
What are the differences in engaging with domestic or multi-national companies (MNCs)? What are some strategies for leveraging CARE’s global presence with both?
How is this relevant to your country and economic context?

Asia Regional Programme Focus Areas1. Engaging Workers
More emphasis needed on:• Placing women at the centre of their destiny, addressing rights of impact populations, and
more purposefully engaging with companies about their business practices• Rigorous measurement for worker engagement outcomes• Shaping future programme initiatives around this area• Identifying new and managing existing partnerships with MNCs• Advocacy: use tea plantations exp.(Sri Lanka) as critical pilot to guide future CARE initiatives
Impact group: Low paid workers (especially in factories/migrants) who are also:• sole household income
earners• under pressure to support
families• operating in workplaces
where conditions do not necessarily conform to industry standards
How:• CARE as an
intermediary agency• Build capacity of local
Community Based Organisations
• and/or deliver training • Facilitate relationships
with MNCs
Why:1. CARE has a lot of
experience in this area2. Workplace responsibility is
a core CSR issue for MNCs
3. Private sector approaching CARE to deliver interventions, and also to advance their own understanding

Asia Regional Programme Focus Areas2. Value Chain Distribution and 3. Aggregation
How (Agriculture example):• Support small-holder farmers to
increase yields/secure consistent & appropriate pricing for products
• Invest in new agricultural techniques and methods
• Improve access to market information and knowledge
• Influence purchasing practices of PS actors in these supply chains
• Help companies establish more inclusive distribution channels for local communities
Going forward: Market Engagement Community of Practice• Key platform from which CARE’s regional market engagement/VC programming can develop• Accelerate our own internal learning cycle • Make it easier to access and apply lessons from across CARE• Ultimately improve our project and programming impact
Why:1. Close gap between
producers/consumers and various representations/ levels of private sector
2. CARE’s experience of regional value chains (VCs) includes: JITA launch, market access and capacity building support for small-scale producers in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Nepal and Indonesia
Impact Group:• Small scale
producers (focus within this on agriculture)
• Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) consumers and producers

added value, in PS language• Impressive entrepreneurs of
our own• Prepared to put our own “skin
in the game” (resources)• Deep market knowledge• Knowledge of investor
mindset + priorities• Context analysis • Telling the story• Innovative, particularly
around the social dimensions• Globally consistent in our
message and outputs• Ability to go to scale
