The spokesman for the Ministry said there had been an influx of peo- ple at government hospitals wanting to be vaccinated following the announcement made by the Health Ministry. The WHO provided the Ministry with a limited number of Swine flu vaccines. Each vaccine costs over Rs. 10,000. However, the vaccine need not be taken by all. Only high risk groups such as health workers, those suffering from chronic diseases (including senior citizens) and preg- nant mothers should get vaccinated. The Number of confirmed A N1H1 cases by Tuesday stood at 371 while the number of deaths were 22. Health Ministry sources however said there were over three thousand unconfirmed cases with symptoms of the flu. Pregant women urged to take swine flu vaccine President of the Sri Lanka Coconut Growers’ Association Anton Fernando said that the low use of fertilizer in coconut cultivation and the inability to pluck nuts due to heavy rains experienced in late November and early December had contributed to the shortage of coconuts and the subsequent increase in prices. He said that their members had mentioned, during their meeting with the Government, that if provid- ed a 50-kilogramme bag of fertilizer at the subsidized price of Rs.1,000, coconut growers would be able to reach their target of 3,500 million nuts per year within the next three years . Fernando said that at no time had they mentioned to the government that if granted the fertilizer subsidy the coconut growers would be able to double the present production of 2,800 to 3,000 million nuts within a single year. He said that currently, the State and private sector together own one million acres of coconut plantations and the country’s maximum produc- tion ever recorded was 3,000 million nuts per year. Rains, lack of fertilizer cause of rising coconut prices - SLCGA BY FRANKLIN R.SATYAPALAN BY ZACKI JABBAR The government, without dilly dally- ing, should clarify through parliament, reports that a UN Panel would be visit- ing Sri Lanka, to investigate allegations of war crimes against the security forces, during the last stages of the bat- tle against the LTTE, the UNP said yes- terday. The party’s Matara District Organiser, Mangala Samaraweera MP, addressing a news conference in Colombo, said that the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime, by not denying alle- gations that it had granted entry visas to the UN Panel, continues to keep the Opposition political parties and people in the dark, on a matter of national importance. Either, Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne or External Affairs Minister G. L. Peiris, should inform parliament when it meets for the new year on Janaury 4, if the UN Panel had been grant- ed permission to enter Sri Lanka or not, he said. According to reports, the UN Panel was to meet the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission in Colombo. Subsequently, it was said that the meeting would take place in a foreign country. The government was duty bound to reveal the truth, without playing to the gallery, he said. Samaraweera praised Senior Minister of Good Governance and Infrastructure Ratnasiri Wickremanayake for being bold enough to comment on the true state of affairs with- in the Rajapaksa regime, while others have kept quiet for fear of losing their perks and privileges. Wickremanayake, addressing a public function at Raigamwatte, Ingiriya on Monday, said that some of the newly appointed Senior Ministers had not been pro- vided offices and Secretaries. He queried how the gov- ernment would face bigger challenges, when some of its Ministers are unable to perfom their duty by the people. Samaraweera said that the recent UNP Convention had united the party and the stage was set for the UNP to recapture power in 2011, through “Peoples Power.” He alleged that the External Affairs Minister G. L. Peiris had “lied” to parlia- ment, by claiming that Nepal had sought Sri Lanka’s intervention to resolve its political crisis. “The External Affairs Minister G. L. Peiris has become a liar with the Nepalese government denying that it had wanted the Rajapaksa regime to resolve its political problems. This had happened due to the disorganisation within the External Affairs Ministry,” he said. The letters of appointment were handed over to the young men and women by the Central Provincial Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa at a meeting held at Governor’s Secretariat. The recruits were chosen through a competitive examination. At least 8,000 candidates sat the examination con- ducted by the Central Provincial Public Service Commission. Twenty of the 178 were male. Governor Kobbekaduwa, address- ing the recruits, warned that they should refrain from falling into the group of public servants in State departments who go by the name of “Eka mage wedak nemei” (that is not my job). The members of ‘AMWN’ not only refrain from attending to members of the public, but also sent them from pil- lar to post without any mercy, he said. Before 2005 the govern- ment in office stopped, by a circular, the recruitment to public service on the directions of the World Bank, Governor Kobbekaduwa said. It was after 2005 as an election pledge by President Mahinda Rajapaksa the government recruited hands to the public service. BY DILANTHI JAYAMANNE The Colombo Municipal Council warned government institutions and schools that from next year it would not stop at warning or sending notices but would take direct legal action under the Mosquito Borne dis- eases Act. Chief of the Public Health Department, CMC, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said on Wednesday (Dec. 29) that that those institutions and schools have been given enough warning and they had adequate staff to carry out regular cleaning cam- paigns. There were 38 dengue cases reported this month, he said. The council was prepared to treat over two thousand dengue cases by the end of the year due to the influx wit- nessed during the first half of the year. However, the timely intervention of the security forces and the police prevented a dilemma by bringing down numbers to a total of 1,920. Last year the city had 1,500 cases. But there were 210 dengue cases reported in December, 2009. This year however the council was able to reduce numbers to 38. The total number of dengue deaths in the city last year was 30, while that too came down to 19 this year. The council had only five percent of the total number of cases in the island. The remaining 95 percent was spread out through the rest of the country. The Entire country had over 33,800 dengue cases from the begin- ning of January till December 28. However a large amount of attention was paid to the city area where the situation was under control, he added. CMC to act against dengue mossy encouragers
