Why Harbor Shores

54% of the Benton Harbor population is below the poverty line

24%of the population left Benton Harbor in the last 15 years

If the City of BentonHarbor had

the level of economic developmentthat the City of St Joseph enjoys

there would be no need for this projectThe primemotivation to create Harbor Shores

is to return BentonHarbor

to the level of economic prosperity it enjoyed prior to

manufacturingsgradual exodus

out of the State of Michigan

Why HarborShores

Jean Mock Park is owned by the City of Benton Harbor

For years residents have directed the city commission

to use the park to create jobs while improving the

facilitys access and recreational opportunities

When all is said and done Jean Mock Park will be

expanded by more than 47 acres with over $1000000in improvementsand ongoing financial resources

dedicated to the City and the Park That by itself makes

Harbor Shores worthwhile project but the tax base

and employment created for future

generations makes this once in

lifetime opportunityPete Mitchell

The Harbor Shores Project

Defined

byPublic Comment

Community looking for jobs and tax base

Community Benefits Agreement has to guide job

training and placement

We want local businesses to participate

Local Contractor and Entrepreneur Meetings already

underway

We want to know what process will assure local

hiring

All contractors and developers will be required to hire

from the local community

We need to make sure local residents are trained

for these position

Local training consortium now being implemented

and Harbor Shores providing funding Sustained

through Community Benefits Agreement

We want to see some local residents assisted in

starting small businesses to take advantage of

these opportunities

Funds are being set aside to create venture funding

andtargeted

assistance forarea businesses

minimize wetland impact

More than 28 acres in original plan reduced to fewerthan nine

We want Jean klock Park to have more recreation

options

The Park will be improved with over $1 million to

improve beach access and include amenities such as

walking trails viewing stations and basketball

We want development that makes us more of

year round destination

The Harbor Shores development is planning on anindoor waterpark to anchor its development

We would like access to the park systemAll of the Harbor Shores areas and Jean Klock Park

will be connected by walking and bike trails

We like the housing but what other options are

being implemented for Benton Harbor residents

Harbor Shores Community Redevelopment Inc is

new homes into Benton Harbor in six years All will

be connected to the planned walking and bike trails

We would like to have more urban fishing optionsAs part of the Jean klock Park expansion three urban

fishing locations are to be improved and madeavailable for public access

do not want any Gated Communities

portion of the waterfront parcels will contain50 easement along the waterfront as part of the

expanded park system thus blocking the use of the

property for gated community

We would like more robust recreation venues in

the community

Harbor Shores through its members has contributed

over $250000 in 2006 for investment andimprovement in the Charles Grey Teen Center

Why Jack Nicklaus

Ordinarygolf courses today are

struggling financially To be viable

course must attract golfers from

outside the immediate vicinity

Mr Nicklaus puts his signature on only

the very best courses and they must havedistinctive elements Harbor Shores made it

clear the development had to be in the

Benton Harbor city limits Mr Nicklaus saw

this location with holes in and around Lake

What if we had no golf

Regrettably LR would have absolutely no interest in

undertaking project in Benton Harbor were it not

for construction of Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf

There has been lot of confusion over the Jean Kiock

development will create three public golf holes in and

around the current parking lot of Jean Mock Park

utilizing 22 acres and adding 47 acres of additional
