Europe4. Migration

Page 3: Developmental Idealism, Demographic Change, and Migration

All Parts Assume that:

1. Human brains are essential components of demographic decisionmaking.

2. Human brains make decisions, at least partially, based on worldviews, beliefs, values, and other ideational elements.

Page 4: Developmental Idealism, Demographic Change, and Migration

Start with Modernization or Developmental Framework

1. Hundreds of years old

2. NOT presenting it to advocate it as a research or policy tool.

3. I am a strong critic of modernization theory.

4. I present it here ONLY because it is necessary to understand developmental idealism.

Socioeconomic modernity is a cause of familial modernity

Familial modernity is a cause of socioeconomic modernity.

Implications of This for Ordinary People in Everyday Life

1. Suggests a dynamic world changing from traditional to modern

Points About Developmental Idealism

1. Point is Not whether the elements are true or false, good or bad.

2. Point is whether they are accepted, rejected, or modified.

3. Point is whether they motivate new behavior.

4. I argue that their acceptance can lead to demographic change.

Some Results of Our Studies1. People understand and use developmental

models and hierarchies

2. People understand developmental idealism beliefs and values.

3. People know what family traits go with development.

4. People believe there are causal connections between family and societal change.

5. Many elements of developmental idealism are widely endorsed.

Implications for Albania and Bulgaria

1. Fertility?2. Marriage?3. Migration?4. Satisfaction with life?

5. How widespread is this pattern in Central and Eastern Europe?

Page 41: Developmental Idealism, Demographic Change, and Migration

Last Focus is Migration

1. Ideational models influence virtually everything.

2. They must influence migration.3. But migration studies provide little

attention to ideational factors.4. My hope is that this will change.

Page 42: Developmental Idealism, Demographic Change, and Migration

Nepal Migration Project

1. Panel study of families and neighborhoods in South Central Nepal from 2008 to 2012

2. Obtained listings of all migrants from study households

3. Interviewed all migrants wherever they have gone in the world

4. Very high response rates

Page 43: Developmental Idealism, Demographic Change, and Migration

Nepal Migration Project

5. Opens up new areas of migration research-- Links origins and destinations-- Permits follow up of migrants-- Permits study of return migration and

chain migration6. We are planning analyses of:

-- Effects of people ’s beliefs and values on out migration

-- Effects of migration on people ’s beliefs and values

7. And there are other possibilities

Page 44: Developmental Idealism, Demographic Change, and Migration

Some Ideational Migration Hypotheses

1. Strong beliefs in developmental idealism lead to higher rates of out migration.

2. Negative evaluations of one’s own country’s development lead to higher rates of out migration.

3. Strong consumption aspirations lead to higher rates of out migration.

4. High levels of commitment to the origin culture lead to lower rates of out migration.

5. Holding fatalistic beliefs leads to lower rates o f out migration.

6. Undoubtedly many others

3. Discussions of how migration in Southeast Europe affects families and individuals, including their well-being and ideas about the world
