DEVICE REUSE AND RECYCLING Sprint’s corporate responsibility program, Sprint Good Works SM , is guided by the principle that doing the right thing is good business. More than a statement, it’s also a belief: Good does indeed work SM . That’s why we are a leader in minimizing the impact our business has on the environment. Through our targeted environmental initiatives, including our industry- leading device reuse and recycling programs, Sprint is creating positive change in the world. By proactively addressing the growing stream of e-waste, we’re making a true differ- ence and demonstrating how good environmental stewardship works to protect our planet. A GROWING PROBLEM Compass Intelligence estimates there are currently 324 million idle devices in the United States alone. Old devices can end-up unused in a drawer, waiting to be called on as “back-up” or in a landfill, wasting valuable materials and potentially seeping toxins in the ground. Sprint wants to put these devices back to work by refurbishing and reintroducing them to the market, often in developing countries or by dissembling and recycling them for materials such as metal and plastic. Reuse and recycling helps to conserve resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent air and water pollution. TAKING ACTION Sprint recognizes the key role we can play in collecting retired products from customers for reuse and recycling. Our actions have been recognized as industry-leading. Sprint Buyback was named the best buyback program in the industry in 2011 and 2012 by Compass Intelligence based on an overall score among national carriers. We are the only wireless carrier to join EPA’s Sustainable Materials Management Electronics Challenge. We were the first wireless carrier to publish an Electronics Stewardship Policy outlining how we will responsibly address e-waste by focusing on the full lifecycle of electronics we buy and sell. We were the first major U.S. wireless carrier to: Buy back eligible phones from any carrier in-store. Offer a buyback credit that can be applied instantly in-store to new purchases. Fully integrate a buyback offer into our online shopping experience for customers. Launch a wireless recycling and buyback site dedicated to Spanish- speaking customers. Include vendor scorecard criteria that rates a manufacturer’s device on its reparability and recyclability and whether it contains an in-box recycling solution. Since 2001, Sprint’s reuse and recycling programs have saved 50 million devices (nearly 12 million lbs. of e-waste) from entering landfills. During 2012, more than 90 percent of those devices have been reused.

A GRowING pRobLEmCompass Intelligence estimates there are currently 324 million idle devices in the United States alone.

TAkING ACTIoNSprint recognizes the key role we can play in collecting retired products from customers for reuse and recycling. Our actions have been recognized as industry-leading.

• Sprint Buyback was named the best buyback program in the industry in 2011 and 2012 by Compass Intelligence based on an overall score among national carriers.

• We are the only wireless carrier to join EPA’s Sustainable Materials Management Electronics Challenge.

• We were the first wireless carrier to publish an Electronics Stewardship Policy outlining how we will responsibly address e-waste by focusing on the full lifecycle of electronics we buy and sell.

• We were the first major U.S. wireless carrier to:

– Buy back eligible phones from any carrier in-store.

– Offer a buyback credit that can be applied instantly in-store to new purchases.

– Fully integrate a buyback offer into our online shopping experience for customers.

– Launch a wireless recycling and buyback site dedicated to Spanish- speaking customers.

– Include vendor scorecard criteria that rates a manufacturer’s device on its reparability and recyclability and whether it contains an in-box recycling solution.

Since 2001, Sprint’s reuse and recycling programs have saved 50 million devices (nearly 12 million lbs. of e-waste) from entering landfills. During 2012, more than 90 percent of those devices have been reused.

CREATING A wIN/wIN/wIN SITUATIoNThrough Sprint Buyback, we are creating a winning situation for customers, the environment and our business.

It’s simple – and valuable – for customers:

• Up to $300 credit for eligible devices from any carrier, available instantly in-store.

• Sprint gave more than $100 million in credit to customers in 2012 alone.

• Any device ineligible for buyback can be recycled through Sprint Project Connect which helps fund programs that empower youth to succeed in a digital world by learning how to use technology in safe, sustainable, and innovative ways. Our charitable partners include the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

• Both programs offer free shipping online and are available in over 3,500 Sprint-branded retail stores. Sprint also offers helpful reminders when customers buy a new device.

It’s good for the environment:

• Sprint reclaimed nearly 11 million devices in 2012.

• E-waste – the fastest growing waste stream in the U.S. – is alleviated.

• For every one million mobile phones that are reused vs. recycled, 40 million kWh of electricity is saved – enough to power more than 3,000 U.S. hmes for a year.

It’s good for business:

• Sprint’s commitment to reuse and recycling has led to $1 billion of cost avoidance.

• Sprint is halfway towards our 2017 goal of reclaiming nine devices for every 10 sold.

CREATING A “SECoND LIFE” FoR DEVICES Mobile devices are small, but they’re packed tightly with a host of valuable components – LCD screens, circuits, memory chips and the like. Even if the phone doesn’t work, it can be like throwing out a whole car instead of replacing the carburetor.

Sprint has been addressing the issue of e-waste seriously for over a decade. We have a head start on best practices and, together with our trusted partners, can help create a “second life” for devices.

• Sprint’s policy is to clear all data from devices in accordance with the original manufacturers’ guidelines.

– As an added layer of protection, Sprint also recommends that customers erase all personal and work-related data from devices before turning them in for collection.

• Once remanufactured, Sprint’s certified, pre-owned devices are just like new and are:

– Available for customers to buy at a fraction of the price.

– Provided in exchange for non-working devices submitted to insurance or repair.

• If unusable, devices and their parts can yield valuable materials – gold, silver, copper, palladium and plastics.

• Recycled metals go back into new electronics, jewelry and plumbing.

– The MGM Grand Lion in Las Vegas contains recycled copper from Sprint’s recycling partner.

– Sprint has met our goal to have 100 percent of our e-waste recyclers certified by a third party by the end of 2012, and we plan to have 100 percent of our remanufacturers certified by the end of 2013.
