SPECIAL TEAMS DOOM TRENTON V. GWINNETT

Trenton, NJ – Akim Aliu scored a game-winning, power play goal late in the second period to break a 2-2 tie as the Gwinnett Gladiators defeated the Trenton Devils, 3-2, Friday at Sun National Bank Center. The Devils rallied from a 2-0 deficit on goals from Ryan Hayes and Ryan Ginand, but Trenton was 0-for-8 on the power play and Chris Carrozzi made 41 saves to preserve the win for Gwinnett in the first of two games between the teams this weekend.

Will Colbert opened the scoring by blasting a slap shot past Jeff Lerg to give Gwinnett its first lead of the game at 6:16 of the first period after the Gladiators were outshot 8-0 in the first six minutes. Colbert stepped into a powerful slap shot after Pat Galivan fanned on a deflected puck in the slot and the puck slid to the oncoming Colbert who fired from near the blue line for his fifth of the season. Less than three minutes later, with the Devils on

a power play, Gladiators forward Andy Brandt took a loose puck at center and raced down the right wing on a shorthanded two-on-one. He fired a wrist shot past Lerg for an unassisted tally, his 15th goal of the season.

Ryan Hayes got the Devils on the board shortly after their power play expired, surprising Carrozzi with a long, desperate shot from the blue line. The puck snuck between the post and Carrozzi’s pad at 9:44 of the first period to get Trenton within a goal, trailing 2-1. Mike Potacco and Matt Vokes picked up assists on Hayes’ 19th strike of the season.

The Devils kept pressing through the remainder of the first period and into the second period, and eventually Trenton’s leading scorer Ryan Ginand tied the game at 2-2 with his 24th goal of the season at 13:22 of the second period. Dan Charleston began the play, executing a 3-on-2 odd-man rush to perfection, drawing a Gladiator defender to him in the slot before dishing the puck left to Ginand who skated in alone and beat Carrozzi with a forehand to backhand deke. Dave Leaderer picked up the second assist on the goal.

Akim Aliu untied the game for Gwinnett moments later, beating Lerg with a quick turnaround slap shot on a power play just 3:41 after the Devils had knotted the score. It was the second special teams goal of the night for the Gladiators and their first power play goal in 15 chances.

Gwinnett’s penalty kill stopped all eight of Trenton’s opportunities with the man advantage, including four in the third period and in the desperate final minute with the goalie pulled for a six-on-four. Despite outshooting three breakaway chances and a 43-32 shots advantage, the Devils suffered their 30th loss of the season.

Trenton remains eight points behind Toledo for the Eastern Conference’s last playoff spot, with the Walleye losing to Kalamazoo Friday. Gwinnett keeps pace with Elmira who topped Wheeling Friday. Both teams improve to 53 points, one point shy of Toledo. The Devils and Gladiators battle again at Sun National Bank Center Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Goalie Chris Carrozzi made 41 saves and helped his team’s PK stop all eight of Trenton’s power plays.

Kinnelon, NJ native Mike Potacco made his “second” debut with Trenton last night and recorded an assist, after he was signed to his second pro contract on Friday afternoon. Potacco’s first pro contract was signed on December 4, 2010 and when he made his pro debut that night against Reading, he became the first New Jersey player to suit up for Trenton since Brick-native Carter Lee last season. Before turning pro, the 5’10, 185-lb. forward played four seasons collegiately at UMASS-Lowell (Hockey East) and three seasons of junior hockey with the St. Michael’s Buzzers (OPJHL). Growing up in New Jersey, Potacco laced the skates up at the high school level for Kinnelon High School and Barnstable Academy (Oakland) after a youth club hockey career with the New Jersey Colonials, Ramapo Saints and Devils Youth Hockey.

POTACCO Q&AQ: What was your favorite team growing up? Who was your favorite player?A: Even though I grew up in northern New Jersey, I was always a fan of how Joe Sakic played, so I rooted for him and the Colorado Avalanche.

Q: In light of the Holiday Season, what was the best present you ever got? The worst? And what are you hoping to get this year? A: When I was 17, I was getting ready to go up to Canada to play junior hockey, so my parents gave me their Durango to go up there with. That was the best. The worst was this holiday sweater I got. It was one of those hideous bright-colored holiday sweaters… I think I buried it in the back of my closet. This year, there are some hoodies I’d like to get and a Tom Brady, Patriots jersey wouldn’t hurt either.

Q: Is there a website that you visit everyday? If so, what is it?A: As much as I hate to say it, Facebook is probably on that list. I also go to NFL.com a lot.

Q: What is your favorite hockey movie? Your favorite non-hockey

movie?A: Hockey wise, I have two: Youngblood and the first The Mighty Ducks. Non-hockey, I like Batman Begins.

Q: What is your favorite vacation spot?A: My sister lives in south Florida, so I like visiting her down there, going to either Fort Lauderdale or Miami. I get to see my sister and the weather isn’t bad either.

Q: If you had to make your own dinner, what would you cook yourself? A: Pasta with tomato sauce and some hot red peppers.

Q: If you could meet three people, alive or dead, who would they be?A: Alexander Ovechkin and Tom Brady. I can’t think of a third person, so how about just Ovechkin, Brady and me.

Page 4: Devils Extra 2011_02_26 Game 56 vs Gwinnett

The Devils take on the Gladiators for the second time in as many nights Saturday at Sun National Bank Center. Gwinnett defeated Trenton, 3-2, in the first half of the teams’ two-game series last night. The win gives the Gladiators a 2-0-0-1 edge in the season series and the teams face-off in three of their next four games, including games in Georgia next Saturday and Sunday.

For the Devils to make the playoffs, Gwinnett is one of the three teams they will have to climb over. The Gladiators win Friday gets them back within one point of the Eastern Conference’s final playoff position, tied with Elmira at 53 points. Toledo lost to Kalamazoo Friday, but still clings to the eighth place with 54 points. The Devils remain eight points behind Toledo with a record of 21-30-1-3 and 46 points.

The Devils are expected to have the same lineup Saturday as they had Friday, which includes Kinnelon, NJ native Mike Potacco, who was re-signed by Trenton to fill the roster spot gained when forward Kory Nagy was promoted to AHL-Albany. Trenton may also again be without defenseman Martin Nolet who was scratched from Friday’s lineup because of injury.

After AHL-Chicago plucked the Gladiators’ leading scorer Michael Forney Wednesday, the Wolves Saturday have called up goalie Chris Carrozzi, who made 41 saves Friday in Gwinnett’s 3-2 win. Defenseman Brennan Turner came back to the Glads Friday after a four game stint with AHL-Binghamton. Former Gladiator Myles Stoesz collides with former Devil Kyle Kucharski Friday night.

Ryan Ginand, Trenton’s lone all-star for the 2010-11 season, shoots the puck a lot. In fact, Ginand not only leads all Devils players in shots on goal with 325, he leads all ECHL players by a staggering 112-shot margin. But more than just shooting the puck a lot, Ginand is capitalizing on his chances and he leads Trenton in all three major scoring categories (24 Goals, 38 Assists and 62 Points). Ginand’s totals tie him with Kalamazoo’s Kory Karlander for third place in ECHL scoring, he’s on pace to break Trenton’s single-season point record (Scott Bertoli’s 79 in 2005-06), and finish higher in league-scoring than any player in team history (Steve O’Brien finished sixth in 2001-02).

SCOUTING THE GLADIATORS* The Gladiators are in fourth place in the South Division, are tied with

Elmira for ninth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 23-25-2-5. As a result of its 3-2 win in Trenton last night, Gwinnett is 2-0-0-1 against the Devils this season and 4-10 in its last 14 games overall.

* Gwinnett has accumulated 157 goals in 55 games (2.85 per game), which ranks 16th in the ECHL. The Gladiators’ leading scorer is Michael Forney, who with 52 points (14g, 38a) is tied for 10th in the league in scoring.

* The Gladiators have given up 191 goals in 55 games (3.47 per game) which are 15th in the ECHL. Chris Carrozzi anchored Gwinnett in goal last night by stopping 41 of 43 shots, however he will be unavailable Saturday, having been called up to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. Edward Pasquale is expected to get the start in goal for the Gladiators tonight and is 4-4-0, with a 4.08 goals-against average and .885 save percentage.

* At even strength, Gwinnet is minus-36, scoring 100 and allowing 136 goals.

* The Gladiators went 1-of-5 on the power play last night and broke a stretch of 14 power plays without a score. With 50 man-advantage goals in 269 chances, Gwinnett’s PP functions at 18.6%, which is ninth in the ECHL.

* Gwinnett’s penalty killers were successful eight straight times against the Devils last night and have now blanked its opponents’ PPs the last 12 times. Besides holding the Devils’ PP down last night, Gwinnett also netted a PP goal and with a season’s percentage of 83.2, the Gladiators have the seventh best PK in the ECHL.

SCOUTING THE DEVILS* The Devils have a record of 21-30-1-3 and are eight points out of the

final Eastern Conference playoff spot, while having gone 6-6-0 in their last 12 games.

* Ryan Ginand remained hot by scoring another goal last night and he now trails Justin Donati by just four points for second place in ECHL scoring. Ginand has six goals and six assists in the last eight games and leads the Devils in goals (24), assists (38), points (62) and shots 325. As a team, the Devils have 173 goals in 55 games (3.15 per game) which is 10th in the league.

* Trenton has allowed 200 goals in 55 games (3.64 per game) which are 16th in the league. Jeff Lerg has started three of the last four games for the Devils and leads all Trenton goalies with 7 wins in 17 games played, while Trenton’s other goalie, Shane Connelly, has a record of 8-14-3 between stints in Trenton, Elmira and South Carolina this season.

* The Devils are minus-18 as a team with 119 even-strength markers scored and 137 against.

* The Devils’ power play was shut-out in eight chances last night after having scored PP goals in five of their prior last six games. With 48 PP strikes in 275 chances this season, Trenton is 12th in the league on the man-advantage (17.5%).

* Trenton’s PK has been successful 195 of 246 times this season, which places 16th in the league at 79.3%.

* Trenton won games on back-to-back days for the first time this season last Saturday and Sunday, but came up short of their first three game losing streak of the year in Wednesday’s 6-3 loss at Reading.
