DEYES STUDENT SUCCESS IN
WORLD KICKBOXING
After a successful trip to the ISKA World Kickboxing
Championships in Jamaica this September, where
Deyes student Ethan won a bronze medal, last Sunday he followed up his success by
competing in the British championships in Birmingham.
Ethan was in a really tough category and came up against some excellent opponents.
He came an impressive 3rd in the country, bringing home another Bronze medal and
securing himself a place in the England team again for next year. Congratulations
Ethan!
Ethan started kickboxing at the age of 5. He has sacrificed a lot for his sport. The
commitment and dedication that he shows never ceases to amaze and makes his family
and the whole school extremely proud. For a 12 year old, he never hesitates to step out
of his comfort zone and push himself beyond his limits.
This level of commitment is highly admirable. Well done Ethan!
BATTLEFIELDS TOUR 2018
On the 12th October 43 year 9 students attended the
World War One Battlefields tour. The students visited a
number of sights in both France and Belgium.
They were able to experience what life was like as a
soldier in the war but also to pay their respects to all
those who sacrificed their lives to protect their country.
Everyone who was involved with the trip heaped praise
on the students for their behaviour and engagement
over the four days.
Prior to the trip, a competition was launched to the
students, that offered the opportunity to take part in the
Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. Five
fantastic applications were received and these students
were selected to take part in the ceremony.
They did a fantastic job and this will be an experience that will remain with them for
the rest of their lives.

PASSPORT TO SUCCESS
Deyes High School have secured 3 'Passport to Success' sessions for all Year 11 students to attend over the academic year. Each session is 90 minutes long and focuses on a different aspect of exam preparation.
The first session will take place on Monday 19th Novem-ber. Groups of students will attend a 90 minute session over the course of the day. When not attending a Passport to Success session students attend all lessons as normal.
The session is called 'Strategies for Success' and will focus on:
How the brain learns - Memory techniques - Understand-ing and condensing text - Maps - The Review Philosophy
The aim of the session is to equip students with effective revision strategies for linear exams.
Students will attend the session in groups. Information about groups and rooms will be circulated in form time tomorrow. A further reminder will be sent on Friday and Monday morning.
We believe these sessions will support students in advance of their summer examinations and provide them with additional information and guidance.
DEYES STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Through the course of this week, a local supermarket reported a recent spate of shoplifting from its store. We have agreed to work with the supermarket to support them in investigating these incidents and in bringing this spate to an end. It goes without saying that the school would take a very dim view of the involvement of any Deyes students in this anti-social and illegal behaviour. This would be classed as a direct breach of the School's Core Values and would therefore put their place at school at risk. We ask that parents support school by relaying this message to your children to ensure all Deyes students have no involvement in such activity, thus protecting the reputation of our wonderful students and school.
GUIDES, TIPS & USEFUL HINTS
As part of the Parent Voice feed-back that was gathered last half term, Parent’s asked for advice and guidance on how to help their children with revision techniques, strategies and resources.
As a response we have improved our revision information on the Deyes High website.
If you visit the subject pages at the address below you will see all subjects now have specialist advice on revision strategies, with links to recommended resources, some of which are available to purchase through the school. There are also links to relevant websites and Youtube channels and also a link to the revision portal where students and parents can download revision resources. https://www.deyeshigh.co.uk/curriculum/subjects/
I hope you find the information and resources useful in supporting your child in preparing for their exams this year; the first set of which are now 2 weeks away.
Well done to the following Year 12 students who raised over £400 for the Alzheimers Society as part of their NCS volunteering programme. The students held a cake sale in school:

ANTI BULLY WEEK—ONLINE SAFETY FOR
PARENTS/CARERS
Anti Bullying week 2018 runs from Monday 12th November
until Friday 16th November. The Thursday focuses specifically
on cyber bullying, which unfortunately is an ever increasing
issue worldwide.
In order to support the 'Stop, Speak, Support' agenda, Deyes
has been working with National Online Safety.
Their #WakeUpWednesday campaign, has seen them create a
free 'conversation starter' poster for use by parents & carers
about online safety.
The guide includes 7 questions to get 'the conversation' going in
relation to your child's internet usage. Engaging in regular, two-
way communication with children about online activities is a
really important way of building trust and highlighting the
dangers they are exposed to every day.
The poster can be seen opposite but can also be found on social
media. Further resources are listed below:

DEYES STUDENT SCOOPS TOP MAGHULL AWARD
Congratulations to Deyes student, Olivia from Year 8,
on receiving the Maghull Town Council Civic Youth
Award, for her work in raising money and awareness of
the fantastic work done by the Woodlands Hospice.
Olivia's Grandad sadly passed away last year and Olivia
felt she wanted to give something back to Woodlands
to show her appreciation of the hard work and care
given to her Grandad and others who are ill in the
hospice.
She decided to do some fundraising which included a raffle in school to win a hamper
which she had taken it upon herself to go to local retailers and ask for donations in order
to fill. She also organised naming a teddy for her Mum to take into work and supported
her Dad who participated in a Santa dash to raise money.
We are all very proud of Olivia's achievement's and so glad her efforts have been
recognized in receiving this prestigious award.
