WHAT WE DODesign for America is a national network of people working together to improve their communities. Since 2009, Design for America has worked with more than 4000 passionate students and design professionals to help more than 300 communities to tackle challenges ranging from accessible healthcare to drinkable water. To prepare the next generation of social innovators, Design for America trains interdisciplinary teams to work together to identify meaningful challenges and iteratively develop sustainable solutions.

WHERE WE STARTEDFaculty Director Liz Gerber co-founded Design for America with students at the McCormick School of Engineering in 2008. Her goal was to empower students to innovate solutions to the problem in their community using human-centered design. Joined by student co-founders Mert Iseri, Yuri Malina, and Hannah Chung, the founding DFA studio started in February 2009 in the Segal Design Institute and has since grown to 38 colleges and universities throughout the country.

A COMMUNITY FOR IMPACTDFA is more than a collection of projects, it is a movement. It is students, mentors, alumni, community partners, entrepreneurs, researchers, industry experts, and users who work together to address major social issues. Their work generates insights and ideas that turn into companies and projects that last well beyond a semester schedule. The real work and personal experiences DFA projects afford changes everyone involved. This is the DFA Network. It’s designed to unite this diverse community of people to accomplish a common goal.

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

SUMMITDesign for America has been hosting summer programs for the past 7 years, and this year marks our inaugural Summit event. DFA Summit 2018 features elements for students, DFAlumni and young professionals, and educators so we can strengthen and inspire our entire network of designers. These three elements are Leadership Studio, the Create Impact Conference, and Symposium. Design Sprint, the main element of Leadership Studio, will focus on empowering high school students in neighborhood public schools in Chicago to change their lives and communities. DFA has partnered with a plethora of Chicago-area non-profits to guide this design process.

LEADERSHIP STUDIOLeadership Studio is a five-day long, intensive crash course in design methods that teaches current DFA students the strategies they need to develop their own teams and use human-centered design to solve problems in their communities.

CREATE IMPACT CONFERENCEThe inaugural Create Impact Conference will bring together DFA alumni and like-minded professionals to use design thinking for social good in their careers and communities. This 3-day conference is for young career professionals.

SYMPOSIUMThis invitation-only program challenges DFA mentors, design educators, industry professionals and leading thinkers to transform how we bring design innovation to intractable social issues through workshops and engaging discussions.

2016 CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTSIn 2016, students worked to increase voter turnout through design thinking. A voting education initiative was immediately adopted by the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners after they evaluated designs and is now part of Chicago election education in middle schools!

2018 SUMMIT HIGHLIGHTSThe Design Sprint Project Expo on Friday afternoon will be a platform for students from 30+ colleges + universities plus area high schools to show off the results from their two-day design sprint on student empowerment in Chicago.

Students will hear from speakers from Artefact, IBM, The Lab @ OPM, The Gates Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, The Bright Side, Kickstarter, and more!

Project Showcase will exhibit DFA work from this academic year that addressed challenges in Sustainability, Accessibility, and Education.

2017’s keynote speaker was Dawna Leggett, a Senior Social Researcher at Design Impact. She called on students to “...relinquish some of that expert mindset and be able to listen to what other people have to offer.” Her background in the social sciences gave a perfect example of how inderdisciplinary minds can contribute to human-centered design.

At 2017’s Leadership Studio, a team of students partnered with Open Doors Organization to increase travel accessibility. Their project, ASCEND, aims to protect wheelchairs during air transportation through a set of intuitive and informative stickers that direct ground handlers on proper storage of these mobility devices. The project is now on the market
