About this Manual

This user’s manual contains detailed information about the systemboard. If, in some cases, some information doesn’t match thoseshown in the multilingual manual, the multilingual manual should al-ways be regarded as the most updated version. The multilingualmanual is included in the system board package.

To view the user’s manual, insert the CD into a CD-ROM drive. Theautorun screen (Mainboard Utility CD) will appear. Click the“TOOLS” icon then click “Manual” on the main menu.

About the Package

The system board and accessories in the package may not comesimilar to the information stated in this manual. This may differ inaccordance to the sales region or models in which it was sold. 1.2 Special Features of the System Board

Hyper-Threading Technology Functionality Requirements

The system board supports Intel processors with Hyper-ThreadingTechnology. Enabling the functionality of Hyper-Threading Technologyfor your computer system requires ALL of the following platforms.

Components:

• CPU - an Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology• Chipset - an Intel® chipset that supports HT Technology• BIOS - a BIOS that supports HT Technology and has it enabled• OS - an operating system that includes optimizations for HT

Technology

Please refer to Appendix A for information a bout enabling thefunctionality of the Hyper-Threading Technology. For more informationon Hyper-Threading Technology, go to: www.intel.com/info/hyperthreading.

DDR

DDR (Double Data Rate) is a type of SDRAM that doubles thedata rate through reading and writing at both the rising and fallingedge of each clock. This effectively doubles the speed of operationtherefore providing two times faster data transfer.

6-channel Audio

The audio jacks at the rear panel will support 6-channel audio onlywhen the audio utility is configured to support this function. The mic-in at the rear will be disabled. Use the front audio’s mic-in jack.

S/PDIF

S/PDIF is a standard audio file transfer format that transfers digitalaudio signals to a device without having to be converted first to ananalog format. This prevents the quality of the audio signal fromdegrading whenever it is converted to analog. S/PDIF is usuallyfound on digital audio equipment such as a DAT machine or audioprocessing device. The S/PDIF connector on the system board sendssurround sound and 3D audio signal outputs to amplifiers andspeakers and to digital recording devices like CD recorders.

Serial ATA Interface with RAID

Serial ATA is a storage interface that is compliant with SATA 1.0specification. With speed of up to 1.5Gbps, it improves hard driveperformance faster than the standard parallel ATA whose datatransfer rate is 100MB/s. The system board allows configuring RAIDon Serial ATA drives. It supports RAID 0, RAID 1 and JBOD.

USB Ports

The system board supports USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports. USB 1.1supports 12Mb/second bandwidth while USB 2.0 supports 480Mb/second bandwidth providing a marked improvement in devicetransfer speeds between your computer and a wide range ofsimultaneously accessible external Plug and Play peripherals.

AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port)

AGP is an interface designed to support high performance 3Dgraphics cards. It utilizes a dedicated pipeline to access systemmemory for texturing, z-buffering and alpha blending. The universalAGP slot supports AGP 8x with up to 2132MB/sec. bandwidth andAGP 4x with up to 1066MB/sec. bandwidth for 3D graphicsapplications. AGP in this system board will deliver faster and bettergraphics to your PC.

Dual Function Power Button

Depending on the setting in the “Soft-Off By PWRBTN” field of thePower Management Setup, this switch will allow the system to enterthe Soft-Off or Suspend mode.

Wake-On-Ring

This feature allows the system that is in the Suspend mode or SoftPower Off mode to wake-up/power-on to respond to calls comingfrom an external modem or respond to calls from a modem PCIcard that uses the PCI PME (Power Management Event) signal toremotely wake up the PC.

Important:If you are using a modem add-in card, the 5VSB power sourceof your power supply must support a minimum of ≥720mA.

Wake-On-LAN

This feature allows the network to remotely wake up a Soft PowerDown (Soft-Off) PC. It is supported via the onboard LAN port orvia a PCI LAN card that uses the PCI PME (Power ManagementEvent) signal. However, if your system is in the Suspend mode, youcan power-on the system only through an IRQ or DMA interrupt.

Important:The 5VSB power source of your power supply must support≥720mA.

Wake-On-PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse

This function allows you to use the PS/2 keyboard or PS/2 mouseto power-on the system.

Wake-On-USB Keyboard/Mouse

This function allows you to use a USB keyboard or USB mouse towake up a system from the S3 (STR - Suspend To RAM) state.

Important:• If you are using the Wake-On-USB Keyboard/Mouse

function for 2 USB ports, the 5VSB power source of yourpower supply must support ≥1.5A.

• If you are using the Wake-On-USB Keyboard/Mousefunction for 3 or more USB ports, the 5VSB power sourceof your power supply must support ≥2A.

RTC Timer to Power-on the System

The RTC installed on the system board allows your system toautomatically power-on on the set date and time.

ACPI STR

The system board is designed to meet the ACPI (AdvancedConfiguration and Power Interface) specification. ACPI has energysaving features that enables PCs to implement Power Managementand Plug-and-Play with operating systems that support OS DirectPower Management. Currently, only Windows®®®®® 2000/XP supportsthe ACPI function. ACPI when enabled in the Power ManagementSetup will allow you to use the Suspend to RAM function.

With the Suspend to RAM function enabled, you can power-off thesystem at once by pressing the power button or selecting “Standby”when you shut down Windows®®®®® 2000/XP without having to gothrough the sometimes tiresome process of closing files, applicationsand operating system. This is because the system is capable ofstoring all programs and data files during the entire operating sessioninto RAM (Random Access Memory) when it powers-off. Theoperating session will resume exactly where you left off the next timeyou power-on the system.

Important:The 5VSB power source of your power supply must support≥1A.

AC Power Failure Recovery

When power returns after an AC power failure, you may choose toeither power-on the system manually, let the system power-onautomatically or return to the state where you left off before powerfailure occurs.

2.2 System Memory

Warning:Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage your system board, proces-sor, disk drives, add-in boards, and other components. Perform theupgrade instruction procedures described at an ESD workstation only.If such a station is not available, you can provide some ESD protectionby wearing an antistatic wrist strap and attaching it to a metal partof the system chassis. If a wrist strap is unavailable, establish andmaintain contact with the system chassis throughout any proceduresrequiring ESD protection.

The system board supports DDR SDRAM DIMM. Double DataRate SDRAM (DDR SDRAM) is a type of SDRAM that doublesthe data rate through reading and writing at both the rising andfalling edge of each clock. This effectively doubles the speed ofoperation therefore doubling the speed of data transfer.

Refer to chapter 1 (System Memory section) for detailed specifica-tion of the memory supported by the system board.

2.2.1 Installing the DIM Module

A DIM module simply snaps into a DIMM socket on the systemboard. Pin 1 of the DIM module must correspond with Pin 1 ofthe socket.

1. Pull the “tabs” which are at the ends of the socket to theside.

2. Position the DIMM above the socket with the “notch” in themodule aligned with the “key” on the socket.

3. Seat the module vertically into the socket. Make sure it iscompletely seated. The tabs will hold the DIMM in place.

The system board is equipped with a surface mount LGA 775socket. This socket is exclusively designed for installing a LGA 775packaged Prescott CPU.

2.3.2 Installing the CPU

1. Make sure the PC and all other peripheral devices connected toit has been powered down.

2. Disconnect all power cords and cables.

3. Locate the LGA 775 CPU socket on the system board.

4. The CPU socket comes with a cover that is attached with aremovable protective cap. The cap is used to protect the CPUsocket against dust and harmful particles. Remove the protectivecap only when you are about to install the CPU.

6. Unlock the socket by pushing the lever down, moving it away fromthe side tab of the socket, then lifting it up.

5. Lift the protective cap from the location pointed below to detachthe cap from the cover.

Important:The CPU socket must not come in contact with anythingother than the CPU. Avoid unnecessary exposure. Removethe protective cap only when you are about to install theCPU.

7. Now lift the cover.

8. Position the CPU above the socket. The gold mark on the CPUmust align with pin 1 of the CPU socket.

Important:Handle the CPU by its edges and avoid touching the pins.

9. Insert the CPU into the socket until it is seated in place. TheCPU will fit in only one orientation and can easily be insertedwithout exerting any force.

Important:Do not force the CPU into the socket. Forcing the CPU intothe socket may bend the pins and damage the CPU.

10. Once the CPU is in place, move the cover down.

2.3.3 Installing the Fan and Heat Sink

The CPU must be kept cool by using a CPU fan with heat sink.Without sufficient air circulation across the CPU and heat sink, theCPU will overheat damaging both the CPU and system board.

Note:• Use only certified fan and heat sink.• The fan and heat sink package usually contains the fan and

heat sink assembly, and an installation guide. If theinstallation procedure in the installation guide differs fromthe one in this section, please follow the installation guide inthe package.

1. Before you install the fan / heat sink, you must apply a thermalpaste onto the top of the CPU. The thermal paste is usuallysupplied when you purchase the CPU or fan heat sink assembly.Do not spread the paste all over the surface. When you laterplace the heat sink on top of the CPU, the compound willdisperse evenly.

Do not apply the paste if the fan / heat sink already has a patchof thermal paste on its underside. Peel the strip that covers thepaste before you place the fan / heat sink on top of the CPU.

11. Push the lever down to lock the socket. The lever should hookonto the side tab to indicate that the CPU is completelysecured in the socket.

2. Place the heat sink on top of the CPU. The 4 studs around theheat sink which are used to secure the heat sink onto thesystem board must match the 4 mounting holes around thesocket.

Position each stud so that the groove faces the heat sink thenpush it down firmly until it clicks into place.

Note:You will not be able to secure the fan and heat sinkassembly in place if the groove is not facing the heat sink.

2.4 Jumper Settings

2.4.1 Jumper Settings for Clearing CMOS Data

If you encounter the following,

a) CMOS data becomes corrupted.b) You forgot the keyboard, supervisor or user password.c) You are unable to boot-up the computer system because the proc-

essor’s ratio/clock was incorrectly set in the BIOS.

you can reconfigure the system with the default values stored inthe ROM BIOS.

To load the default values stored in the ROM BIOS, please followthe steps below.

1. Power-off the system and unplug the power cord.

2. Set JP1 pins 2 and 3 to On. Wait for a few seconds and setJP1 back to its default setting, pins 1 and 2 On.

3. Now plug the power cord and power-on the system.

If your reason for clearing the CMOS data is due to incorrectsetting of the processor’s ratio/clock in the BIOS, please pro-ceed to step 4.

4. After powering-on the system, press <Del> to enter the mainmenu of the BIOS.

5. Select the Frequency/Voltage Control submenu and press <En-ter>.

6. Set the processor’s ratio/clock to its default setting or anappropriate frequency ratio or bus clock. Refer to the Frequency/Voltage Control section in chapter 3 for more information.

7. Press <Esc> to return to the main menu of the BIOS setuputility. Select “Save & Exit Setup” and press <Enter>.

8. Type <Y> and press <Enter>.

The system board can only be used with an analog video moni-tor. Connect the monitor’s 15-pin D-shell cable connector to theVGA port (Blue) at location CN2. If your monitor supports ana-log video but does not have a 15-pin D-shell connector, see yourmonitor dealer for the adapter or optional cable. After you plugthe monitor cable into the VGA port, gently tighten the cablescrews to hold the connector in place. Some monitors have aswitch that chooses between analog and TTL (or digital) opera-tion. If your monitor has such a switch, set it for analog.

Install the “Realtek Audio Drivers”. An audio software applicationprogram will at the same time be installed into your system. Thisprogram will allow you to configure 2-channel, 4-channel and 6-channel audio modes as well as configure the audio effects. Referto chapter 4 for more information.

Front Audio

The front audio connector (J1) allows you to connect to the line-outand mic-in jacks that are at the front panel of your system. Usingthis connector will disable the rear audio’s line-out and mic-in func-tions.

Remove the jumper caps from pins 5-6 and pins 9-10 of J1 prior toconnecting the front audio cable connector. Make sure pin 1 of thecable connector is aligned with pin 1 of J1. If you are not using thisconnector, make sure to replace the jumper caps back to theiroriginal pin locations.

The system board is equipped with a shrouded floppy disk driveconnector for connecting a standard floppy disk drive. To preventimproper floppy cable installation, the shrouded floppy diskheader has a keying mechanism. The 34-pin connector on thefloppy cable can be placed into the header only if pin 1 of theconnector is aligned with pin 1 of the header.

Connecting the Floppy Disk Drive Cable

Install one end of the floppy disk drive cable into the shroudedfloppy disk header (J15) on the system board and the other end-most connector to the floppy drive. The colored edge of thedaisy chained ribbon cable should be aligned with pin 1 of J15.

The system board is equipped with 2 Serial ATA connectors at loca-tions J11 (SATA 2) and J12 (SATA 1) for connecting Serial ATAdevices. Connect one end of the Serial ATA cable to a Serial ATAconnector and the other end to your Serial ATA device.

Configuring RAID on Serial ATA Drives

The SiS 964 south bridge controller allows configuring RAID on theSerial ATA drives. It supports RAID 0, RAID 1 and JBOD. The fol-lowing must be set accordingly.

1. Set the “SiS Serial ATA Controller” field to “Enabled”. (IntegratedPeripherals submenu - “SIS OnChip PCI Device” section of theAward BIOS.)

2.6.5 IDE Disk Drive Connector

The system board is equipped with two shrouded PCI IDE head-ers that will interface four Enhanced IDE (Integrated Drive Elec-tronics) disk drives. To prevent improper IDE cable installation,each shrouded PCI IDE header has a keying mechanism. The 40-pin connector on the IDE cable can be placed into the headeronly if pin 1 of the connector is aligned with pin 1 of the header.

Each IDE connector supports 2 devices, a Master and a Slave. Usean IDE ribbon cable to connect the drives to the system board. AnIDE ribbon cable have 3 connectors on them, one that plugs into anIDE connector on the system board and the other 2 connects toIDE devices. The connector at the end of the cable is for the Masterdrive and the connector in the middle of the cable is for the Slavedrive.

Connecting the IDE Disk Drive Cable

Install one end of the IDE cable into the Primary IDE header (J14)on the system board and the other connectors to the IDE devices.

If you are adding a third or fourth IDE device, use another IDEcable and install one end of the cable into the Secondary IDEheader (J10) on the system board and the other connectors tothe IDE devices.

Adding a Second IDE Disk Drive

When using two IDE drives, one must be set as the master and theother as the slave. Follow the instructions provided by the drivemanufacturer for setting the jumpers and/or switches on the drives.

The system board supports Enhanced IDE or ATA-2, ATA/33,ATA/66, ATA/100 or ATA/133 hard drives. We recommend thatyou use hard drives from the same manufacturer. In a few cases,drives from two different manufacturers will not function prop-erly when used together. The problem lies in the hard drives, notthe system board.

Important:If you encountered problems while using an ATAPI CD-ROMdrive that is set in Master mode, please set the CD-ROM driveto Slave mode. Some ATAPI CD-ROMs may not be recognizedand cannot be used if incorrectly set in Master mode.

2.6.7 Power Connectors

We recommend that you use a power supply that complies withthe ATX12V Power Supply Design Guide Version 1.1. An ATX12Vpower supply has a standard 20-pin ATX main power connectorand a 4-pin +12V power connector that must be inserted ontoCN9 and CN8 connectors respectively.

The 4-pin +12V power connector enables the delivery of more+12VDC current to the processor’s Voltage Regulator Module(VRM).

The system board requires a minimum of 300 Watt power supplyto operate. Your system configuration (CPU power, amount ofmemory, add-in cards, peripherals, etc.) may exceed the minimumpower requirement. To ensure that adequate power is provided, westrongly recommend that you use a minimum of 400 Watt (orgreater) power supply.

3.1 Award BIOS Setup Utility

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is a program that takes careof the basic level of communication between the processor andperipherals. In addition, the BIOS also contains codes for variousadvanced features found in this system board. This chapter explainsthe Setup Utility for the Award BIOS.

After you power up the system, the BIOS message appears on thescreen and the memory count begins. After the memory test, thefollowing message will appear on the screen:

If the message disappears before you respond, restart the system orpress the “Reset” button. You may also restar t the system bypressing the <Ctrl> <Alt> and <Del> keys simultaneously.

The drive type information should be included in the documentationfrom your hard disk vendor. If you select ”Auto”, the BIOS will auto-detect the HDD & CD-ROM drive at the POST stage and showthe IDE for the HDD & CD-ROM drive. If a hard disk has notbeen installed, select “None”.

Access Mode

For hard drives larger than 528MB, you would typically select theLBA type. Certain operating systems require that you select CHS orLarge. Please check your operating system’s manual or Help desk onwhich one to select.

3.1.2.2 Virus Warning

This field protects the boot sector and partition table of your hard diskdrive. When this field is enabled, the Award BIOS will monitor the bootsector and partition table of the hard disk drive. If an attempt is madeto write to the boot sector or partition table of the hard disk drive,the BIOS will halt the system and an error message will appear.

After seeing the error message, if necessary, you will be able to runan anti-virus program to locate and remove the problem before anydamage is done.

Many disk diagnostic programs which attempt to access the bootsector table will cause the warning message to appear. If you arerunning such a program, we recommend that you first disable this field.

3.1.2.3 CPU L1 & L2 Cache

These fields speed up the memory access. The default value isenabled. Enable the external cache for better performance.

3.1.2.4 CPU L3 Cache

This field is used to enable or disable the CPU’s L3 cache.

3.1.2.5 Hyper-Threading Technology (for Intel® Pentium® 4 Processorwith Hyper-Threading Technology only)

This field is used to enable the functionality of the Intel® Pentium® 4Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology and will appear onlywhen using this processor.

3.1.2.6 CPU L2 Cache ECC Checking

The processors supported by the system board come with built-inLevel 2 cache. By default, ECC is enabled to check the Level 2 cache.If you are not using this function, set this field to Disabled.

3.1.2.7 Quick Power On Self Test

This field speeds up Power On Self Test (POST) whenever thesystem is powered on. The BIOS will shorten or skip some checkitems during POST. To attain the shortest POST time, select “Fast”.

3.1.2.9 First Boot Device, Second Boot Device, Third Boot Device andBoot Other Device

Select the drive to boot first, second and third in the “First BootDevice” “Second Boot Device” and “Third Boot Device” fieldsrespectively. The BIOS will boot the operating system according tothe sequence of the drive selected. Set “Boot Other Device” toEnabled if you wish to boot from another device.

3.1.2.10 Boot Up Floppy Seek

When enabled, the BIOS will check whether the floppy disk driveinstalled is 40 or 80 tracks. Note that the BIOS cannot distinguishbetween 720K, 1.2M, 1.44M and 2.88M drive types as they are all 80tracks. When disabled, the BIOS will not search for the type of floppydisk drive by track number. Note that there will not be any warningmessage if the drive installed is 360KB.

3.1.2.11 Boot Up NumLock Status

This allows you to determine the default state of the numerickeypad. By default, the system boots up with NumLock on whereinthe function of the numeric keypad is the number keys. When set toOff, the function of the numeric keypad is the arrow keys.

3.1.2.12 Gate A20 Option

This entry allows you to select how gate A20 is handled. Gate A20is a device used to address memory above 1 Mbyte. Initially, gate A20was handled via the keyboard controller. Today, while keyboards stillprovide this support, it is more common, and much faster, for thesystem chipset to provide support for gate A20.

3.1.2.13 Typematic Rate Setting

Disabled Continually holding down a key on your keyboard willcause the BIOS to report that the key is down.

Enabled The BIOS will not only report that the key is down,but will first wait for a moment, and, if the key is stilldown, it will begin to report that the key has beendepressed repeatedly. For example, you would use sucha feature to accelerate cursor movements with thearrow keys. You can then select the typematic rate andtypematic delay in the “Typematic Rate (Chars/Sec)”and “Typematic Delay (Msec)” fields below.

3.1.2.14 Typematic Rate (Chars/Sec)

This field allows you to select the rate at which the keys areaccelerated.

3.1.2.15 Typematic Delay (Msec)

This field allows you to select the delay between when the key wasfirst depressed and when the acceleration begins.

3.1.2.16 Security Option

This field determines when the system will prompt for the password- everytime the system boots or only when you enter the BIOSsetup. Set the password in the Set Supervisor/User Passwordsubmenu.

The drive will providesufficient notice to the system or user to backup data prior to thedrive’s failure. The default is Disabled. If you are using hard drivesthat suppor t S.M.A.R.T., set this field to Enabled. SMART issupported in ATA/33 or later hard drives.

In order to improve system performance, certain space in memory canbe reserved for ISA cards. This memory must be mapped into thememory space below 16MB. When enabled, the CPU assumes the 15-16MB memory range is allocated to the hidden ISA address rangeinstead of the actual system DRAM. When disabled, the CPU assumesthe 15-16MB address range actually contains DRAM memory. If morethan 16MB of system memory is installed, this field must be disabledto provide contiguous system memory.

Disabled Select this option if you want to use a differenthard drive controller.

PIO means Programmed Input/Output. Your system supports five modes, 0 (default) to 4, whichprimarily differ in timing. When Auto is selected, the BIOS will selectthe best available mode after checking your drive.

These fields allow you to set the Ultra DMA in use. When Auto isselected, the BIOS will select the best available option after checkingyour hard drive or CD-ROM.

Auto The BIOS will automatically detect the settings foryou.

Disabled The BIOS will not detect these categories.

IDE DMA Transfer Access

This field, when Enabled, will enhance the IDE DMA transfer of aparallel ATA IDE hard disk drive. To enable this function, make surethe “Internal PCI/IDE” field is not disabled.

IDE Burst Mode

When the IDE Burst Mode function is enabled, it will reduce the latencytime between each drive’s read and write cycle. To enable this function,make sure the “Internal PCI/IDE” field is not disabled.

IDE Prefetch Mode

This allows data and addresses to be stored in the internal buffer ofthe chip, thus reducing access time. Enable this field to achieve betterperformance.

3.1.4.4 Onboard LAN Boot ROM

Enable this field if you wish to use the boot ROM (instead of a diskdrive) to boot-up the system and access the local area networkdirectly.

If you wish to change the boot ROM’s settings, type the <Shift> and<F10> keys simultaneously when prompted during boot-up. Takenote: you will be able to access the boot ROM’s program (by typing<Shift> + <F10>) only when this field is enabled.

3.1.5.1 ACPI Function

This function should be enabled only in operating systems that sup-port ACPI. Currently, only Windows®®®®® 98/2000/ME/XP supports thisfunction. If you want to use the Suspend to RAM function, make surethis field is enabled then select “S3(STR)” in the “ACPI Suspend Type”field.

This field allows you to select the type (or degree) of power savingby changing the length of idle time that elapses before the Suspendmode field is activated.

User Define Allows you to set the power saving time in the“Suspend Mode” field.

3.1.5.4 Suspend Mode

3.1.5.5 Video Off Option

This field is used to set an IRQ channel for the modem installed inyour system.

3.1.5.8 Hot Key Function As

This field allows you to use the <Ctrl>, <Alt> and <Backspace>keys to enter the Power Off or Suspend mode.

Power Off Press the <Ctrl>, <Alt> and <Backspace> keys si-multaneously to enter the power off mode.

Suspend Press the <Ctrl>, <Alt> and <Backspace> keys si-multaneously to enter the Suspend mode.

Disable Disables the hot key function.

3.1.5.9 HDD Power Down

This is selectable only when the Power Management field is set toUser Define. When the system enters the HDD Power Down modeaccording to the power saving time selected, the hard disk drive willbe powered down while all other devices remain active.

3.1.5.10 Soft-Off by PWRBTN

This field allows you to select the method of powering off yoursystem.

Delay 4 Sec. Regardless of whether the Power Management func-tion is enabled or disabled, if the power button ispushed and released in less than 4 sec, the systementers the Suspend mode. The purpose of thisfunction is to prevent the system from powering offin case you accidentally “hit” or pushed the powerbutton. Push and release again in less than 4 sec torestore. Pushing the power button for more than 4seconds will power off the system.

Instant-Off Pressing and then releasing the power button atonce will immediately power off your system.

3.1.5.11 PWR Lost Resume State

Keep Off When power returns after an AC power failure, thesystem’s power is off. You must press the Powerbutton to power-on the system.

Turn On When power returns after an AC power failure, thesystem will automatically power-on.

Last State When power returns after an AC power failure, thesystem will return to the state where you left offbefore power failure occurs. If the system’s power isoff when AC power failure occurs, it will remain offwhen power returns. If the system’s power is onwhen AC power failure occurs, the system will power-on when power returns.

3.1.5.12 PM Wake Up Events

When enabled, the system will power-on to respond to calls comingfrom an external modem.

Resume On LAN

Set this field to Enabled to wake up the system via the onboardLAN.

Resume On PCI Event

Enabled This field should be set to Enabled only if your PCIcard such as LAN card or modem card uses the PCIPME (Power Management Event) signal to remotelywake up the system. Access to the LAN card or PCIcard will cause the system to wake up. Refer to thecard’s documentation for more information.

Disabled The system will not wake up despite access to the PCIcard.

USB Port Wake Up Control

This field, when enabled, allows you to use a USB device to wake upthe system.

PS2KB Wakeup From S3/S4/S5

This field allows you to use the PS/2 keyboard to wake up thesystem from the S3/S4/S5 state.

Disabled Default setting. Uses the power button to poweron the system.

Any Key Press any key to power-on the system.Hot Key When this option is selected, select the function key

(F1 to F12) you would like to use to power-on thesystem.

Power Up By Alarm

Enabled When Enabled, you can set the date and time youwould like the Soft Power Down (Soft-Off) PC topower-on in the “Month Alarm”, “Day of MonthAlarm” and “Time (hh:mm:ss) Alarm” fields. However,if the system is being accessed by incoming calls orthe network prior to the date and time set in thesefields, the system will give priority to the incoming callsor network.

When enabled, access to the specified field (Primary IDE, SecondaryIDE, FDD/COM/LPT Port or PCI PIRQ[A-D]#) will cause thesystem to wake up completely from the power management mode.When disabled, the system will not wake up from the powermanagement mode despite access to the specified field.

3.1.5.13 Delay Prior To Thermal

This field is used to select the time that would force the CPU to a50% duty cycle when it exceeds its maximum operating temperaturetherefore protecting the CPU and the system board fromoverheating to ensure a safe computing environment.

If you want to proceed, type <Y> and press <Enter>. The defaultsettings will be loaded.

3.1.10 Set Supervisor Password

If you want to protect your system and setup from unauthorizedentry, set a supervisor’s password with the “System” option selectedin the Advanced BIOS Features. If you want to protect access tosetup only, but not your system, set a supervisor’s password with the“Setup” option selected in the Advanced BIOS Features. You will notbe prompted for a password when you cold boot the system.

If you want another user to have access only to your system butnot to setup, set a user’s password with the “System” option se-lected in the Advanced BIOS Features. If you want a user to enter apassword when trying to access setup, set a user’s password withthe “Setup” option selected in the Advanced BIOS Features.

Using user’s password to enter Setup allows a user to access only“Set User Password” that appears in the main menu screen. Accessto all other options is denied.

3.1.13 Exit Without Saving

When you do not want to save the changes you have made,highlight “Exit Without Saving” and press <Enter>.

Type “Y” and press <Enter>. The system will reboot and you willonce again see the initial diagnostics on the screen. If you wish tomake any changes to the setup, press <Ctrl> <Alt> <Esc> simulta-neously or <Del> after memory testing is done.

3.2 SiS RAID BIOS

The SiS RAID BIOS utility is used to configure and manage RAID onSerial ATA drives.

Important:Before you run the SiS RAID BIOS utility, make sure to:• Set the “SiS Serial ATA Controller” field to “Enabled”. (Inte-

grated Peripherals submenu - “SIS OnChip PCI Device”section of the Award BIOS.)

• Set the “RAID or SCSI Card Boot” field to “SiS 964 RAID”.(Advanced BIOS Features submenu of the Award BIOS.)

After you power up the system and all hard disk drives have beendetected, the SiS RAID BIOS status message screen will appear.Press the <Ctrl> and <S> keys simultaneously to enter the utility.The utility allows you to build a RAID system using two Serial ATAhard drives.

3.3 Updating the BIOS

To update the BIOS, you will need the new BIOS file and a flashutility, AWDFLASH.EXE. You can download them from DFI’s web siteor contact technical support or your sales representative.

Note:AWDFLASH.EXE works only in DOS mode.

1. Save the new BIOS fi le along with the flash uti l ityAWDFLASH.EXE to a floppy disk.

2. Reboot the system and enter the Award BIOS Setup Utility toset the first boot drive to “Floppy”.

3. Save the setting and reboot the system.

4. After the system booted from the floppy disk, execute the flashutility by typing AWDFLASH.EXE. The following screen will appear.

5. Type the new BIOS file name onto the gray area that is next to“File Name to Program” then press <Enter>.

4. Configure RAID (e.g. creating or deleting RAID) in the SiS RAIDBIOS Setting Utility. You can enter this utility by pressing the<Ctrl> and <S> keys simultaneously during system boot up.

5. Install the “SiS RAID Drivers”.

A.1 Enabling Hyper-Threading Technology

To enable the functionality of the Hyper-Threading Technology, pleasefollow the requirements and steps below. Basically, the followingpresumes that you have already installed an Intel® Pentium® 4Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology.

1. The system requires a minimum of 300 Watt ATX 12V powersupply.

2. Aside from installing a CPU fan on the Intel® Pentium® 4Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology, make sure to in-stall cooling fans. The system requires adequate airflowthroughout the chassis to prevent overheating the processor.

3. The “Hyper-Threading Technology” field in the Advanced BIOSFeatures submenu of the Award BIOS setup will appear. Makesure this field is set to Enabled.

4. Currently, only Windows® XP supports the Hyper-ThreadingTechnology. If this OS has been previously installed, you mustREINSTALL it.

5. After installing Windows® XP, please check the following toensure that the operating system has been properly installed.

a. Click Start, point to Settings then click Control Panel.

b. Double-click the System icon. The System Properties dialogbox will appear.

When the BIOS encounters an error that requires the user tocorrect something, either a beep code will sound or a messagewill be displayed in a box in the middle of the screen and themessage, PRESS F1 TO CONTINUE, CTRL-ALT-ESC or DEL TOENTER SETUP, will be shown in the information box at the bot-tom. Enter Setup to correct the error.

B.1 POST Beep

There are two kinds of beep codes in the BIOS. One code indicatesthat a video error has occured and the BIOS cannot initialize thevideo screen to display any additional information. This beep codeconsists of a single long beep followed by three short beeps. Theother code indicates that a DRAM error has occured. This beepcode consists of a single long beep.

B.2 Error Messages

One or more of the following messages may be displayed if theBIOS detects an error during the POST. This list indicates theerror messages for all Awards BIOSes:

CMOS BATTERY HAS FAILEDThe CMOS battery is no longer functional. It should be replaced.

Caution:Danger of explosion if battery incorrectly replaced. Replace onlywith the same or equivalent type recommended by the manu-facturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the batterymanufacturer’s instructions.

CMOS CHECKSUM ERRORChecksum of CMOS is incorrect. This can indicate that CMOShas become corrupt. This error may have been caused by a weakbattery. Check the battery and replace if necessary.

DISPLAY SWITCH IS SET INCORRECTLYThe display switch on the mainboard can be set to either mono-chrome or color. This indicates the switch is set to a different

C.1 Troubleshooting Checklist

This chapter of the manual is designed to help you with problemsthat you may encounter with your personal computer. To efficientlytroubleshoot your system, treat each problem individually. This is toensure an accurate diagnosis of the problem in case a problem hasmultiple causes.

Some of the most common things to check when you encounterproblems while using your system are listed below.

1. The power switch of each peripheral device is turned on.2. All cables and power cords are tightly connected.3. The electrical outlet to which your peripheral devices are

connected is working. Test the outlet by plugging in a lamp orother electrical device.

4. The monitor is turned on.5. The display’s brightness and contrast controls are adjusted

properly.6. All add-in boards in the expansion slots are seated securely.7. Any add-in board you have installed is designed for your system

and is set up correctly.

Monitor/Display

If the display screen remains dark after the system is turned on:

1. Make sure that the monitor’s power switch is on.2. Check that one end of the monitor’s power cord is properly

attached to the monitor and the other end is plugged into aworking AC outlet. If necessary, try another outlet.

3. Check that the video input cable is properly attached to themonitor and the system’s display adapter.

4. Adjust the brightness of the display by turning the monitor’sbrightness control knob.

Troubleshooting

The picture seems to be constantly moving.

1. The monitor has lost its vertical sync. Adjust the monitor’s verticalsync.

2. Move away any objects, such as another monitor or fan, thatmay be creating a magnetic field around the display.

3. Make sure your video card’s output frequencies are supportedby this monitor.

The screen seems to be constantly wavering.

1. If the monitor is close to another monitor, the adjacent monitormay need to be turned off. Fluorescent lights adjacent to themonitor may also cause screen wavering.

Power Supply

When the computer is turned on, nothing happens.

1. Check that one end of the AC power cord is plugged into a liveoutlet and the other end properly plugged into the back of thesystem.

2. Make sure that the voltage selection switch on the back panel isset for the correct type of voltage you are using.

3. The power cord may have a “short” or “open”. Inspect the cordand install a new one if necessary.

Floppy Drive

The computer cannot access the floppy drive.

1. The floppy diskette may not be formatted. Format the disketteand try again.

2. The diskette may be write-protected. Use a diskette that is notwrite-protected.

3. You may be writing to the wrong drive. Check the pathstatement to make sure you are writing to the targeted drive.

4. There is not enough space left on the diskette. Use anotherdiskette with adequate storage space.

Hard Drive

Hard disk failure.

1. Make sure the correct drive type for the hard disk drive hasbeen entered in the BIOS.

2. If the system is configured with two hard drives, make sure thebootable (first) hard drive is configured as Master and thesecond hard drive is configured as Slave. The master hard drivemust have an active/bootable partition.

Excessively long formatting period.

1. If your hard drive takes an excessively long period of time toformat, it is likely a cable connection problem. However, if yourhard drive has a large capacity, it will take a longer time toformat.

Parallel Port

The parallel printer doesn’t respond when you try to print.

1. Make sure that your printer is turned on and that the printer ison-line.

2. Make sure your software is configured for the right type ofprinter attached.

3. Verify that the onboard LPT port’s I/O address and IRQ settingsare configured correctly.

4. Verify that the attached device works by attaching it to a parallelport that is working and configured correctly. If it works, theprinter can be assumed to be in good condition. If the printerremains inoperative, replace the printer cable and try again.

Troubleshooting

Serial Port

The serial device (modem, printer) doesn’t output anything or isoutputting garbled characters.

1. Make sure that the serial device’s power is turned on and thatthe device is on-line.

2. Verify that the device is plugged into the correct serial port onthe rear of the computer.

3. Verify that the attached serial device works by attaching it to aserial port that is working and configured correctly. If the serialdevice does not work, either the cable or the serial device has aproblem. If the serial device works, the problem may be due tothe onboard I/O or the address setting.

4. Make sure the COM settings and I/O address are configuredcorrectly.

Keyboard

Nothing happens when a key on the keyboard was pressed.

1. Make sure the keyboard is properly connected.2. Make sure there are no objects resting on the keyboard and

that no keys are pressed during the booting process.

Mainboard

1. Make sure the add-in card is seated securely in the expansionslot. If the add-in card is loose, power off the system, re-installthe card and power up the system.

2. Check the jumper settings to ensure that the jumpers areproperly set.

3. Verify that all memory modules are seated securely into thememory sockets.

4. Make sure the memory modules are in the correct locations.5. If the board fails to function, place the board on a flat surface

and seat all socketed components. Gently press each componentinto the socket.

6. If you made changes to the BIOS settings, re-enter setup andload the BIOS defaults.
