THE SUPREME COMMAND of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti

T HE MAN who performs Sadhana twice a day regularly, the thought of Parama

Purusa will certainly arise in his mind at the time of death, his liberation is a sure guarantee. Therefore every Ananda Margii will have to perform Sadhana twice a day invariably. Verily is this the Comnland of the Lord. \Vithout Yama and Niyama Sadhana is an impossibility. Hence the Lord's Command is also to foHow Yama and Niyama. D iso bedience to this Command is no thin g but to throw oneself into the tortures of animal life for crores of years. That no one should undergo torments such as these, that he might be enabled to enjoy the eternal blessedness under the loving shelter of the Lord, it is the bounden duty of every Ananda Margii to endeavour to bring all to the Path of Bliss. Verily is this a part and parcel of Sadhana to lead others along the Path of Righteousness.

His trial began June 27 with the testimony of Madhivananda (formerly an Avadhuta) who is the primary witness for the state. His testimony lasted seven days followed by cross-examination until July 15. the entire prosecution has been on the weight of his statements to date. His tale reads like a cheap novel, telling in lurid detail the 18 murders he was forced to commit . Their aim cannot be to convict him, only to soil his image and demoralize and disband the organization. Baba has not been able to appear in court because of illness. On July 15 He was taken from the Bankipore jail and brought into court on a stretcher. His presence was needed solely for the purpose of identification by Madhivananda. After identification he was excused from the proceedings because of illness. Our last newsclippin was dat e d July 16. Further information will arrive here and be disseminated

Acarya Sujit Kumar has written (on July 20): "Regarding case , commitment trial is going on. It is 95% in our favor . So far main vlitness Madhivananda has been cross-examined. He has miserably failed in putting the case against us. rfheir hopes are now gone down and the enemy is frustrated. After all, fight with Brahma is not a joke as they thought of. I hope he will be on bail very soon." This we have heard before, and may continue to hear, for it is his

liila. He ldill remove himself when he has accoD"!"91ished His purpose. vlhatever it may be. One sadhak has suggested one of the positive effects may be the publicity Ananda Marga is receiving.By the time it is de cided in our favor, we will be known \"rorld-wide. How are we to know and judge his divine play? HABArS-most recent message to l Har.p;iis (in a telegram sent in June) is this:

1. I am spi ritually with you always . 2. ''''hen I will be out from Jail Ananda Marga Hill be 16 time s more. 3. Where there is Harga I am physically there.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Yesterday I received this letter from Sadhana. I thought perhaps you might like to read it.

" • • • We \vent to Patna and on our first day there we tried to get in the jail to see Him but they have stopped all visitors. We sent a note to BABA and His reply was that He wouldn't come out to the office because He was not well. Then we kept trying but the next day Mr. and Mrs. Prasad came. Hr. P. was determined to see. BABA. First he t .. ent to the jail and the answer came that BABA could not 6-ome out because He was not well, but that He -'-lias anxious to see someone. Then we went to customs in Patna where Mr. P. contacted someone in charge of jails and he in turn contacted someone higher than himself. Then Mr. P. wanted to go to the CBl for permission to see BABA but they vlere no help; then we went to the Secretariat to the man in charge of all jails and he couldn't help.(Some Dadas said we should say we weren't Ananda Hargiis but Hr. P. said we would not do that.) Finally we got to the Inspector General of Jails for Bihar State and he then again contacted the

----Secretaria-i of Home - Affairs How big it got. Then -we went to th- jail and they called Mr. P. into the first gate and we all watched anxiously and then we saw the Dadas who were in jail with BABA -- Satyananda, General Secretary CSarveshwarananda) and another Dada -- they were glowing from ear to ear

and they waved to us to come in. Then after a half-hour they called Mr. Dutta in (Sadhana's husband) and Mrs. Prasad figured they wouldn ' t allow women in. Oh yes, before going to the jail we got fruits for BABA and malas (garlands) and on one mango Mr. Dutta and I wrote BABA PLEASE COME OUT SOON and our names. Then we waited for another ten minutes of eternity and finally Ravindra (Nr. Dutta ) came out and we all eot past the first gate . We got inside and they said that we could all go in but we would not be allowed to talk but Mr. P. persuaded him to let us. vIe went in but without the fruit and malas. BABA was sitt ing on a wooden bed with a blanket or t\!O in a lungi and undershirt with Raymondo (the Philippino whole-timer who refused to leave India and so ot thrown in iail with BABA. He was granted bail but refused it.) and one Avadhuta on ea;h side using hand fans . - It was very hot there, too hot. BABA said the conditions in the jail \"lere just terrible, that it was very hot and He couldn't sleep at nie:ht. Than He had dysentery. 'l'hen He told Hr. PrasStd abClut_.pisjgp (Mr P_rasad :i.JLT_e.tj:r:inr,) and that he should do more social \lfork and not worry about money jobs anymore. He told t·lrs. P. that same thing. He called Ravindra brave boy and asked ho ... ! I was. Then we said we had to r,o and MBA seemed very sad . He said "Bas (enough), that's all," then Mr. P. said that the officials \.,rere waiting there for us. So we left. And Ravindra touched BABA's foot and kissed it. Then 'vie saw where the Avadl1utas live next door to :aBA. His cell number VIas 1?13... The Avadhutas were in the same kind of cell only with no beds. The rooms were extremely hot and there were no windows, only one door. It Vias really awful. And no fan in this he at here in India where people are dying all over. Some day that will be a grand pilgrimage place."

Ever sinc e I read this letter I have been feeling very sad deep inside . NOH I know very well that He is the Lord and Ire cannot truly suffer and that He is only there because He chooses to be and that in this way He is taking upon Himself all the samskaras of this planet, but still I feel so sad for Him. I feel like I must do one of two things : either I must suffer as He is suffering for the sake of His gre at mission, or I must work work work with every oun ce of my strength so that His Love may flood this entire globe. But it does not yet seem my time to suffer in jail or by persecution

--although I am sure that day \vi-ll come -- so nOvl r- must work---w-ithout ceasing to materialize His plans. I only pray that He guide my feet forward on His path, that He guide my intellect toward His goal, that He chart my course so that I do not waste any of His energy that He has sO lovingly given me -- that I do not deviate from His path even a fraction of an inch, for a fraction of a second.

But I know that if we keep our minds always on Him, if our hearts are always cradled in His hands, we can do nothing else but His \Vill.

with all love madhurii

_ .. ------ . AN ANDA HARGA LOS:E:S 1; 1 200. 00

'::'he results of n UKK are impossible to measure with our finite minds. Pven if \'/e could somehow see the effects both internal and external, hoVJ v:onlll \'Ie value them? CrJ.n we compare the love that touched all of our hearts or the friendship of so many brothers and sisters with the effort and expenses needed to TJut the seminar together? Isn't even one gently flowing kiirtan, arms reachinp: hiph, voices raised and hearts open worth the thousands of hot and rramped miles of driving it took to come together? It is impossible to think that any sacrifice we were called to make was too great knowing of that devotion now resting i our hearts.

Spiritually we all know that the seminar was successful. Hentally ",e know th;,t our minds ,..rere lifted and expanded. Physically \'Ie know we went through clash and are now little stronger and purer because of it. It might be well to end any comment on the UKK on this high note and let the problems involved \vork ther:;selve5 out in time. But there is one point \-Thich needs to be made and it needs our nttention and thouf,ht.

ivhen v:e started puttinr: together the icJ.eas and :olans for this seminClT, we kYle\'.' that it \,as r,oinr; to ')e an effort bigger than Rnything we had oone before. P,s nnyone who has helped orp:ani7.e any UKK knows there are ahlays more things to do than there seems to be time to complete. But we sot an early start and utilized our experience from the last two national UKKs.

We figured costs of food, lodginf, kitchen equipment, sound systems, and the dozens of smaller details that would need to be completed. After doing this and considering the financial state of this office we determined the registration fee to be $20. This amount vlOuld leave some room for attention to unexpected demands. So we proceeded to fill the schedule with programs designed to interest all and allow for creative adjustment.

There was one consideration, however , we did not expect and did not allow for. Thi s Vias that 1/5 of the people coming to the UKK ould not help out by paying the expected registration fee, and that 1/3 of those att ending the intensi ve trainine: during the second week vJOuld neglect the fee also.

At all previous seminars there have been those who could not pay the registration and we understood and asked their help in other vrays. These persons had never been too large a group and they had cooperated with us in doing jobs around the UICK. This time it was much different.

vhen you consider that as many as 150 people at UKE and again as many at Intensive Training did not pay, it is easy to figure that someone was footinr,

.. their expenses \"hich came to around $4,500. 00. 110st of these people were not even responsible enough to work at the seminars in consideration of their debt to the other members. This was evident in that there vias always a need for more help in the kitchen, day-care, and eenernl building clean-up.

As it now stands, we have had to spend over $1 3,500.00 for the seminar and there are over $1, 000. 00 in outstanding biDs to be paid next month. The regis-"

. t:rLi.on fee should have offset this completely. But we were only able to collect $ 13, 300 in registration. It is plain to see that our National Office, already

hardpressed financially, has to make up $1,200.00 What this means is that we all must suffer the setback. We had planned

on having some extra finances after the seminars. This could have been utilized , to make the National Office more effective, to support the Sister's Home project,

to support new acaryas, and to do so many other good things for Ananda Hare:a. But instead we must cry under the weight of our heavy burden, the burden created by

i rresponsible brothers and sisters not even willing - to meet the nece'ssities , not to speak of sacrifices, which are sO important for the growth of our Society.

It is our duty from this day forward to check this kind of behavior. If we as a group can not show a high degree of responsibility even in our own projects , how can we ever expect to demonstrate to the world that Ananda Marga is a practical and useful tool for TIniversRl Progress?

To those who were not able to pay the fee to attend the seminar, we have this request: Search your heart and see if there is a weight on it which can be removed by sending as much of the seminar fee ($20 or $40) as is possible. Remember, Baba always collec ts with interest.

NATIONAL OFFICE SPENDillU $ 3,000.00 PER NONTH

Throughout history, great ideas have been brought fOri-lard regardinr: improvement of all phases of human life. Plans have been drmvn, charters and consti tutions written, and ideas projected for more projects than we could ever imagine. Many of these theoretical projects have had subtle approaches and hUJ'lane goals, but why, as evidence portrays, is the world not better ',O"ff because, of them?

The problem arises when the transition from theory to practice is made. Here is where we have fallen short. Grand and glorious aspirations fail when there is no common sense and no practical utility to a theory . As Baba says concerning theory," It sounds good in the ears."

Well, Ananda Harga theory is based on practice, not dreams. No silly idealism·for us, thank you. Sadhana , service, and sacrifice are the actions of Ananda Marga. We have a practical subjective approach while maintaining an objective adjustment. This is where the reality and the progress of Ananda Harga is found.

What we find in Ananda Marga today may be approachin the subjective, but in very few instances do we find it adjusting to the objective. For example, in June, we had 600 people attend UKK and 250 of those people continued another week for Intensive Training (that's a lot of interested people!). 'vIe also counted almost 100 active units in the United States (that must mean a lot more interested people!) Yet, for the month of Jun the National Office received only $85.00 from the units sending 1/8 of their total donations.

That is rediculous! How can the National Office or any Jariti office hope to operate with that kind of financial support? The $85.00 was almost enouh to cover the postage expenditure at the National Office for June.

Now, let's really look at the seriousness of this situation. Above and beyond the normal monthly office expenditures which averaes $1,000.00, the National Office has incredulously met tremendous financial demands on a tremendously limited and miraculous budget. In just the last 2 months the National Office has been called on to:

1. Send an emergency fund of $1,200.00 to purchase departure tickets from Dacca to the Philippines for 5 AMURT workers , American and Philippino acaryas whose visas had - expired"and: could hot -be rene\'led. 2. Purchase tickets for two acharyas to fly from Philippines to the U.Se

at a cost of $2,500.00 (They will be here soon) .

3. Send over $1,300.00 in support money to acaryas in Mexico, South America, Germany and Tahmn.

4

DFTS-02761

Page 10: DFTS-02753cd.anandamarga.us/1972-08 o Crimson Dawn - Newsletter Ananda Ma… · Acarya Sujit Kumar has written (on July 20): ... be the publicity Ananda Marga is receiving.By the

4. Put up $500.00 for Immigration Bond for Ac. Sarit Kumar to enter the U.S. ( This will probably need to be done for the other two acaryas -another $1,000.00)

The total monthly expenditures of the National Office are now nearing as much as $0,000.00 and they are only going to become p,reater in the future.

We must support the National Office and make it strong. It is our unifying "center", the iista chakra of our objective development. The objective expansion will take place if our energies are collectively focused. \-/hen we were supporting BangIa Desh, our energies were flowing collectively for a common cause and we were successful in working \vith a short term project. Now, we must focus our energies on making a strong "core" with the long term goal of spiritual expansion encompassing the Universe.

To begin with, each unit must send 1/8 of total donations received (minimum of $10.00) each month to the National Office. Also, each individual is responsible for projectinr, Ananda Nare;a to the public, presenting our as vlell as our deeds. The more money to flow through Ananda Barga is just that much more money being directed towards a UniversallyproRressive goal. Remember, we are not hoarding money, we are directing it towards the all-around upliftment of the humanity.

Dadaj ii's Visa Status The Immigration and Natualization Service in Kansas City determined that they

could not grant Dada's visa. The determination was made on the grounds that Ananda Marga has not sufficiently indic ated its nature as a religious denomination or organization. We were, however, allowed to appeal the case to the Regiona l Commissioner's office of the Immigration Service.

The appeal is sc heduled for August 16th in the Regional Commissioneris office

in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Haskell Barst, the attorney for Ananda Marga, Pramiil and Uththaman will present oral arguments in behalf of the Society. These arguments are given before a representative of the Regional Commission who then reviews the case before the Commission. The case will therefore not be determined immediately.

If we receive a favorable determination, Dada will obtain a resident visa. Considering the possiblity that the case does not favor Ananda Barga, we are ready to appeal to a higher body. At any rate, as long as we are appealing, Dada may remain in the U.S. and we of course hope for ultimate success.

If it is so, from where the flow of mantra comes? \fuo gives power to the Mantra? And all the mantras are the same or not? Even though philosophically it is a tricky question, but practically it remains quite clear from the above line that mantras become potentially strong only when it comes out from the mouth of the Guru.

I will explain ab out Guru in my next article. Now let me, tell you hovl mantras are made powerful. Accordinr; to the figure you see, the primordial point of the soun0 remains in the muladhar chakra. Step by step, it comes out from the mouth as a Hord. The Guru is so powerful that he conceives the SO\lrce within. That means vibration is created in the muladhar chakra. That is from the seed itself the idea becomes vibrated. Finally, when it comes out of His mouth, the word becomes potentially very strong. That is why it is said flHantras are the Guru's. sayinGsfl•

A r.lCmtrR could be divided into three parts. Part on_iDipani'Shakti; the second is mantre 'f,ha'thj and the third is mantra Caetanya, .. Dipani'Shakt i is made powerful by folloVlins Yama and Niyama. With 'Lne help of Dipani'Shakti,

the effect of the mantra is fuliy realized by getting the ideation part completed. Here MADlillVIDHYA, second lesson helps the spiritual aspirant . In the second lesson, the sadhaka brings into him the ideation of Brl3luna everywhere. So with the help of t1ADlillVIDHYA, the Dipani I Shakti mantra CaetanY8.omes fulfilled. The sadhaka feels the expansion of mind. And also 'r-ealizes "1- A..11 EEtl-:ith- the help of other lessons. So \"Ie have come to realize that the mantras given by the Guru have the effect of taking a dhaka up tb SAVIKALPA SA1DHI.

Now let us know how a sadhaka get Noksha or Nirvikalpa Samadhi. It is said in the Scriptures that on Ideation of Guru D.nd by His Krpa one obtains his goal. In thi s reference ,I ,-rant to tell a story how Guru is most important part particularly in rultra. Th is is an extract from Ma habharata. There was a low class (Shudra) archer vlho ,"as living in a village. Even though he had enough skill to kill animals with his bow at a long distance, still he felt something was lacking in him. He \Jent in search of a Guru ( tea cher ). The man's name was E'kalaeva. Finally after continous search, he found a Guru vlhose name was Dhronacharya. He saluted the Gu.ru aIld begged to enroll him as .. desciple. __ __

But the Guru completely nep:lected his appeal because of his low cast (Shudra). So E:kalaeva with full of devotion, ideated on the figure of Guru and left the plRce (Ashrama). He came back to his place and made" an image of the Guru by himself. From that very moment, he started doing arrow practice keeping one eye on the figure of the Guru. His devotion and his pin-pointed c oncent ration towards his lshta or Guru was SO great, after a few months he almost became the best archer. He even excelled Arjuna \-1ho \-las supposedly the best among Drona' s Disciples. From this story vie come to know that for a sadhaka his goal should be perfectly clear. Keeping his goal (lsl1ta) as the target with the pranayama as the force. an asnirant should force the arrovi of mind into the Supreme Desideratum.

As a sadhaka, therefore, let Us keep in our mind the final goal and move to\-lards it with the help of Guru's Kripa-(grace).

Peace be ,,,i th you.

"8Wsi%om mJWtt' OUR MODEL PROJECT: THE SISTERS HOHE

There is currently being created in Wichita a very unique living experience for_ homeless Girls ages 11 to 16 . Harp;iis will soon ( hopefully October 1) have the

opportunity to shar e a home with 7 teenage girls who are wards of the court (adjudicated ) . These girls for the most part are what the court terms t lwaYVlard " ) that is, run-aways. Their home situations were intolerable. • • they were dis

satisfied with their f amily situation and so they ran • • • or were asked to leave. Generally, they feel distrust and disdain for the " establishment" al- . though they are NOT criminals - they are out on the streets • • • "waYVTardlt•

Recently a state-run institution ( detention home - j ail) called Friendly GablAs

was closed by the court because of archaic conditions leaving many sisters with

out a place to live; at present, these girls must be (1) returned to a distreS3-ful family situation ( from which they usually run again ) or (2) sent to jail (due to lack of housing, this is the procedure in the maj ority of cases ) or (3) sent to a foster home - but this usually does not happen because t here are never

enough foster parents who are willing to take troubled teenagers - most want young children and t hose who DO take the girls , are over 90% unsuccessful - the girl remains in the home usually no more than a week - either she runs away or the parents call and say Itcome get her!" - they can't control her. The reason given by professional as to why foster homes don't work is this : structurally,

a foster home is basically the same as the girls original home and offers no

rehabilitation or treatment - sooner or later ( usually soonert) the girl again

r ebels.

What to do \Vi th \vayward T eenagers", The very latest findings of federal funding agencies under the ausplCles of HEV!

(Health, Education and Welfare) indicate the rather astonishing success of "GRCUP BOARDING HOMES". All over the country these group resedential homes are sprinr:

i ng up, apparently with much success . As a result , various state and federal funding agenc ies have been advised to support, fund and encourage group boarding

homes.

Wichita Welcomes M1URT

From the very beginning, everywhere we went - whether to the Junge, the parole officers, t he soci al welfare department, community planning counsel, or various

_other city officials and financial agencies - we were welcomed with open arms _

l i t erally everyone has been more than enthusiastic and encourageing to us. The only thing Vie have done is make appointments and keep them. Every place we go we learn something - each person teaches us something we need to know, - tells us someone else we should see. How to get funding, how to write a proposal, how to draw up a budget , how to set up a program, what to look for in a house, etc. All the information, advise and encouragement has been given to us \\rillingly and happily. Now it only remains to be done • • • Our biggest stumbling block has been finding a house - but we have 2 very good possibilities and feel that it won't be long now!!! Our budget and proposal will be turned in to the "Governor's Committee on Criminal Administration" by the 1st of September; and if all goes well at their monthly meeting during the second week of September, we will have our funding and be open by October 1st.

Our Goal

The following is an excerpt from our Proposal:

Our goal is to bring about an all-around upliftment to adjudiated girls between the ages of 11 and 16; to make available to them the opportunity to become physically strong, mentally aware and spiritually elevated ; to provide a home-like atmosphere in which love, security , understanding will

be coupled with a fair and consistent discipline. A well-balanced and allaround education will be provided and encouraged. Public education, along with tutoring, psychological services, and ample opportunity for creative expression ( including classes. in sewing, art, relaxation and music) will be provided and encouraged. Our aim is to help the girls to overcome crip-· pIing emotional problems in order that they may become aware of their great potential and become well-adjusted to the human society."

Need

There is a crying need all over the country for such homes - all across the country adjudicated teenagers are locked in jails when what they really need is just

._-what we in Ananda Marga can provide - a loving home with brothers and sisters ---__

who are genuinely concerned and s incerely care. After this first project is set up and running, we will immediately take steps to share all we have learned about setting up homes with other units - it is really relatively easy and FUND-ING IS AVAILABLE. Again we must ask for your support in helping set up our first permanent national project - our model project. As you can plainly See, having a successful home set up and running will be of great benefit to all units in setting up their own permanent social service pr oj ects . So we will gladly welcome and sincerely appreciate financial support in the next 3 months -after that we will be on our own - and no longer need outside support . Donations now however, will be of the greatest help to us in setting up a wonderful home for these needy sisters. Carbondale Unit just sent us a very nice check from a garage sale they conducted - all they did was ask all members to bring unused "stuff" to the jagriti - after some time and much accumulation, they advertised a flea market for charity on the radio, T.V., newspaper, and dittoe d up some signs. The sale was run on a "golden rule" basis - signs told that it Has for charity so "give what you can".

STATEHISE OVERVIEW OF PRACAR

, :

The following list has been drawn up from the monthly reports of units for the months March, April , May , June and from the Nat ional UKK registration forms.

Clarificat ions : An active unit is one that regularly and without fail c onducts weekly dharmacakra. If any unit is not l i sted below it is b e c ause we are not sure i f you are active or not . Correc t us of any errors , please .

Units which are listed with asterisks liave been uncooperative and negligent in filing unit reports . One asterisk indicates that reports for May and June have not been filed ; two asterisks indicates that for three or more months unit reports have not b een sent . Without unit reports it is very difficult for the program secretaries to have a clear idea of what Ananda Marga is doing throughout thi s c ontinent ; c onfusion and lack of coordination become inescapable . So please send in unit reports promptly at the end of each month. We have revised the reports so you can just fill in the enclosed forms.

An active margii is one v/ho regularly attends dharmacakra and is willing to help out with local M1 act ivities . The l i sting af active margs i s very vague for two reasons : 1 ) unit se cretaries not being sure what an ctive margii ' is, and 2) units haven' t been sending in report s , so w e have no figure s for many units. When you consider that the number of active margiis is about the only way we have of clearly measuring our strength and of gauging the effectiveness of our pracar efforts , maybe you t ll agree that we ought to get a fairly precise list here in Wichita.
