It is Sunday 19 th February and Eric and I have just returned from tree planting at the Maesdu Golf Club in Llandudno. What a fantastic morning. The Mayor of Llandudno, young families, Golf Club members, our intrepid photographer Lion Martin Smith, Lion John Vaughan our Environmental Officer with his good lady Past District Governor Shirley, Zone Chair Sandy, Lion President Dennis and the Lions of the splendid Llandudno Club with their wives who put on hot soup, pies, rolls, tea and coffee from their Lions caravan, all of which was greatly appre- ciated by everyone in such extreme cold. We were all shown how to plant the trees and within the morning some 200 trees were planted. What a great opportunity to show the community what we are all about. The youngsters had a great time as did everyone else. Well done Llandudno Lions and their ladies. Further coverage on page 4. Nearly 3000 trees will soon have been planted in our district. A special thanks to Lion John Vaughan for all his hard work. It is amazing, in the last three weeks I have been in extremes of weather. His wife Lynn, Eric and two very kind gentlemen pushing the car up a hill, only to get going again and getting stuck at a roundabout and the pushing start- ing all over again. We never got to the charter. We got back (fortunately) to David and Lynn’s dining table had a Chinese meal with hot tea in all our finery and toasted the health of Cheadle Lions Cub. The following weekend I was in Dublin at the Howth Sutton Lions Club Charter, the Irish sea was like a mill pond and the weather was beautiful ! Our Convention Team are continuing to work hard preparing a wonderful convention for us all. Our International guest, Past International President Bill Biggs, is really looking forward to his visit with us. He will be planting a tree to commemorate his visit at The Beaufort Park (Convention) Hotel. Our International President Wing- Kun Tam will be with us at The National Arboretum in Birmingham on Monday March12th at 3 pm. Past District Governor Frank Marnell and our Special Projects Co-ordinator Lion Lynda Demaid-Jones are organising bus- es to take Lions from the district to the Arboretum. From the Arboretum, IP Tam will be going to Kegworth and wants to meet as many Presidents and Lions as possible at the Best Western Hotel in Kegworth at 6 o’clock the same evening. We are being asked by our MD to really promote our Signature Projects of LEHP (Lions Eye Health Programme) and YLIS ( Young Leaders in Service). Our team will be addressing Convention. A special thanks to Lion John Vaughan for all his hard work.

It is amazing, in the last three weeks I have been in extremes of weather. Trying to get to Cheadle Charter 4th February, with Lion District Secretary David Slack driving in heavy snow. His wife Lynn, Eric and two very kind gentlemen pushing the car up a hill, only to get going again and getting stuck at a roundabout and the pushing start-ing all over again. The following weekend I was in Dublin at the Howth Sutton Lions Club Charter, the Irish sea was like a mill pond and the weather was beautiful !

Wednesday 15th February I (with faithful friends Enfys and Elizabeth) fulfilled an invi-tation to visit the oldest club in the Multiple District, the London Host Club.

MULTI DISTRICT YOUNG AMBASSADOR FINAL

The Multi District 105 Final of the Young Ambassador Competition took place at the Village Hotel, Dudley over the weekend of 16th to 19th February.

Our candidate Katie Farley was up against some stiff opposition and did not win the competition overall. However she was an extremely good Young Ambassador for 105BS sponsored by Stone Lions Club. Her presentation was excellent and we are all very proud of her. As ever, they were all winners.

The competition was won by Charlotte Smith of District 105BN, sponsored by Birchwood Lions Club; a very worthy winner whose opening lines of her presentation were “People will forget what you said, they will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel” !! The Shipshape Award (a £500 voucher towards a trip on a tall ship aimed at developing leadership and team building skills, open to young people of all physical abilities) was won by 15 year old Fiona Montgomery of District A, sponsored by Letchworth GC and Baldock Lions Club who is herself disabled.

Under MD Officer Graham Venables, the event ran smoothly as ever and was much enjoyed by everyone present.

The attendance at the Sunday morning Presentation was very good and, as usual, listening to all 12 Candidates was very humbling (unfortunately the Irish Candidate was unable to attend due to illness). They cover such diverse activi-ties in their work in the community that the judges have a difficult job picking the winner.

During the weekend the event welcomed the First Vice International President Wayne Madden from Indiana with his wife Lion Linda and Past International Di-rector Lion Phil Nathan and Heidi and Chairman of Council Tony Gadsby and Diane. This competition does not take place in America and, as the 1st Interna-tional Vice President had seen the European Final in Maastricht, Lion Phil Na-than invited him to attend the MD105 Final. In his speech on Sunday he ex-pressed his appreciation of the high standard of the Candidates and of the com-petition itself.

Katie pictured right will be making her presentation at the District Convention on 17th March when she will receive her trophy.

Thank you to all from District 105BS who supported the event.

Glenys Sanders – District Officer Young Ambassador.

Llandudno Tree Planting

. On Sunday 19th February members of the Lions Club of Llandudno and Maesdu Golf Club spent the morning planting 200 tree saplings around parts of the Maesdu golf course. This event was organised in support of International President Wing-Kun Tam challenge to Lions around the world to plant one million trees this year to demonstrate the strength of the Lions global network.

The trees used on Sunday came from the Woodland Trusts Jubilee Woods project. The green keepers at Maesdu will over the coming weeks plant the remaining trees. In total 800 saplings will be planted. All visi-ble by public from either the road, Llandudno hospital or the public footpaths which cross the greens. Lion President Dennis Pearson gave a special thanks from Llandudno Lions to the Mayor of Llandudno Coun-

cillor Greg Robins for attending the planting and the Meas-du Club Chairman Richard Trigg, President David Sawyer, Men’s Captain Tony Jones and Ladies Captain Audrey Henderson for their help with the project.

Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions - 2012 Update

Readers will recall that we told you in August 2011 about the help given by Ironbridge & Severn Gorge to Aysha Taylor who had a long history of health problems and that they provided her with her own Laptop special mouse and keyboard so that she was able to continue her studies not only at school but at home as well. She is an absolutely amazing happy little girl and

is very clever considering she was so poorly at birth. Aysha has now been awarded a commendation from school for her re-markable progress since having the computer and keyboard. Mum Melanie Taylor said “Without the laptop to practice on at home she wouldn’t be achieving what she is now” Photo right shows President John Marsh and Aysha with the laptop spe-cial mouse and keyboard.

Ellesmere Port - Pay Back Time

Over the years Ellesmere Port Sea Cadets have helped and supported numerous charity activities in and around Ellesmere Port. To attend and visit many of these functions, especially transporting musi-cal equipment, they have needed to use their old mini bus. Regrettably the mini bus is almost conked out and is beyond repair. For the past 2 years Ellesmere Port Sea Cadets have helped and supported Ellesmere Port Lions with their annual Firework Gala. In return Ellesmere Port Lions are delighted to be able help with the funding of the Sea Cadets second hand mini bus project with a cheque for £1,000

The occasion was also marked with presentations to many Ellesmere Port Sea Cadets who had achieved awards/diplomas covering First Aid, Duke of Edinburgh Award, First Aid, RYA Sailing, 2nd Sea-manship, Foundation Climbing and Top Rope Climbing.

Pictured right - Lt Commander Toni Cioma, MBE, RNR, Ellesmere Port Sea Cadets receiving the cheque from Steve Talbot President Ellesmere Port Lions Club with Mike Bradley Ellesmere Port Lions Fund Raising and all the Ellesmere Port Sea Cadets that had received awards that evening.

Alsager Martials Up Help

The photograph below shows Lion Presi-dent Sam Alcock presenting a cheque to Chloe Macdonald-Dunn a pupil of Alsager High School. Chloe, who is a member of the Stoke United Taekwondo Club, started the sport some two years ago and in that time has gained a blue belt red tag which is just three away from a black belt. Lion Dave Nixon was approached to see if Alsager Lions could help towards the finances of the transportation costs for Chloe to attend other competition venues around the coun-try, in order to further her goal of competing in the 2016 Olympics. Alsager Lions were more than delighted to help a local young lady and wish her well in all her efforts.

Our I.P. Tam will be visiting our district this month as you know, however we have to do our own Press Releases. I am requesting any P.R.O's who have good contacts with their local press to contact them and ask if they are willing to cover the event. I will be doing a Press Release if they require it or they can send their own reporters or photographers. I hope lots of you Club Presidents are going to Kegworth to meet IP Tam as this should be an opportunity to create some fine publicity for your club, there is still time to book in. In order to book for the event contact Brigitte/Becky at MDHQ 0121 441 4544 or [email protected]

Later this month it is also District Convention and any club planning to take part in the Scrap Book Competition please let me know by email me A.S.A.P? I look forward to seeing you at Convention.

On the news front I have received very few news items for this month so please send me any articles you may have even for future events as we can still publicise them?

Flint ‘s Travellers Quickly Snapped Up

Recently Flint’s intrepid travellers, father and son team, Lions Terry and Ian Withington offered their help to Vision Support to act as guide marshals for a sponsored abseil event in Loggerheads Country Park near Mold in Flintshire. The 80 acre country park is lovely and there are some steep cliffs with views over the surrounding countryside. The park has activities that range from a gentle stroll exploring the local wildlife to a heart-pounding abseil down the Devil's Gorge.

The simple plan was registration at the Café near the car park, a morning stroll up to Devils Gorge with Ter-ry and Ian walking up front with Frank Hill from Abseil UK and the 1st group. They were to put out direction signs for any team members who may get lost en route or indeed on the way back, then either one of them to walk back, then go again with the second group up to the Gorge, then bring the signs back.

For Terry and Ian nothing is ever simple, upon arrival at the Gorge they found that the Vision Support pho-tographer was not fully experienced in photographing in such an environment and had the wrong lens for her camera. In the event Lion Ian took over and captured over 200 photographs of the action and the antics of those abseiling. Some of which are shown below. Recently Flint Lions have been contacted by Vision Support regarding their next sponsored event a Skydive. No doubt Lion Ian will volunteer again and we would not be surprised to see him to put on the helmet cam in pursuit of the next exclusive picture.

Photos left Frank Hill checking a safety harness. Below left & right several of Ian’s photos of abseilers in ac-

tion. Far right Lion Terry waiting for some action. For details of 2012 Skydive for Vision Support contact Jane Arends on 01244 381515 [email protected]
