Activities CoordinatorModel citizens are those who never hesitate to help their communities. Here at Naseem International School, we hope to develop students into becoming active contributors to their communities.

Over the previous years, we were able to establish a sound reputation based on our community and service programme at Naseem International School. This year was no different. We strove to point our students in the proper direction. Students from both the High School and Middle School were given the opportunity to lend a hand to many people in their community, especially those who were in desperate need of help.

During this school year, our students worked on many projects; the largest included a huge fund-raising drive which culminated in the purchase of many wheelchairs that were distributed to the needy. Other planned activities included visiting the orphans, the elderly and the ill; presenting them with gifts, sharing and communicating with them. The out-of-school activities included volunteering at hospitals, at animal centers and planting trees around the school campus. Many students participated in the Trade-Quest competition and the Model United Nations. The faculty takes pride in their student body, especially those who represent the school off campus with pride, dignity and confidence. This participation does not end with the students but extends to their families who contribute through their continued physical, spiritual and financial support. This was particularly evident at this year’s Cancer Charity Walkathon hosted by our school.

I would like to thank everyone for their efforts and contributions that will be rewarded in the end. Their never-ending positive support is highly appreciated. I wish all of my students the best of luck, and I am sure that their devotion to their community will grow as they reap the rewards of their passion to help those who are less fortunate.

Jameela Saif

M.S.Student Led Conferences The Student-Led Conferences took place on Thursday 21 March. All parents were requested to schedule appointments with their children’s Homeroom teachers for this very important event. This conference was conducted individually by each student during which he/she was encouraged to prepare a 10 to 15 minute presentation. Students discussed their strengths and weaknesses within the selected pieces of work from different subjects. This type of conference allows students to reflect on and to take responsibility for their own learning. Some of the advantages are that students realize how important their learning is, they develop better presentation skills and gain more confidence.

ACTION-packed ExhibitionGrade 6 students at Naseem International School completed a six week inquiry into Sharing the Planet as part of their IBO inquiry based curriculum. An important part of the exhibition is for students to relate their learning to a real life action.

Rhea wrote an illustrated a book which she read to younger students to make them aware of green energy. Nadia went to the Ministry of Labor, and did an interview to gather information on migrant workers in Bahrain. Eman’s action plan focused on recycling clothes. With the support of her peers she donated clothes to the Awali Thrift Shop. Jenan’s action plan was directed at making students aware of bullying. She sold wrist bands saying “I am against bullying” and donated the profit to Pacer, a National Bullying Prevention Centre. Best friends, Khaled and Ali held a workshop for a grade 2 class, to teach them about bullying. These grade 6 students showed us that you are never too young or old to show that you care or to get involved in charity work.

E.S Student-led ConferencesStudent-led conferences provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their learning to their parents. A student-led conference is a form of assessment for parents. Each student invites his or her parents to attend a session relating to the student’s learning goals and progress. The meeting is led by the student and they follow an agenda. During the meeting, the students share their learning by completing a range of trans-disciplinary activities, and they share their educational goals and examples of their portfolio. The students also analyze their strengths and weaknesses, and reflect upon the educational consequences of choices that they have made. Together, the student, teacher(s) and parents determine what each will do to help the student move closer to the student’s educational goals. Student-led conferences engages parents and ensures that students take responsibility for their own learning.

Home Sweet HomeGrade 3 went on an excursion to Old Muharraq, Amwaj and Al Khalifa Park, as a conclusion of their unit of inquiry “Home sweet Home”. One of the lines of inquiry of unit 4 was to find the differences between old and new houses. Going to old Muharraq to view old traditional Bharaini houses helped the students identify the details they learnt through inquiry in the classroom through photos and slides. The students observed the detailed carving on the doors and the arches in the houses, as well the old architecture of old Bahraini houses.

During this excursion they also went to Amwaj where there are more modern houses. The pupils were able to view the difference between the architecture of old Bahraini houses and new Bahraini houses. They observed that some modern houses incorporate elements from the traditional old houses.

Students also had the opportunity to draw from life, what they have been doing in the art lesson. This will be great practice for them to improve their drawing and observations skills.
