DGJG MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR NOVEMBER 2018
NOVEMBER IS OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH
***Graphics by Rtn. Debbie Vance BC CANADA
November 1st 2018
G ‘day
Well October was hectic. Now the official DG club visits are all but completed I can concentrate on the
Polio Plus Bike Relay around our D9700. The bike ride will herald the opening of the Griffith 2019
Conference.
There is plenty of news this month from around our District 9700 and beyond. I have done my best to
include all the stories sent to me. I am particularly interested in new members so send me the
induction photos and a name or names of our new members and I promise to publish them here.
The drought is taking up plenty of time, as it should be. There are so many different ideas but above
all I trust the clubs on the ground to respond and ask for help if they need it.
This Rotary month is our Foundation Month. So get behind DRFC PDG David Kennedy and see where
you can help us achieve our goals this year. Please respond to David’s call for your own club Foundation goals for 2018-2019.
Thanks to all of you for your wonderful and generous hospitality. I WILL BE BACK!

I. PRESIDENT BARRY RASSIN’S MESSAGE NOVEMBER 2018
RI President Barry Rassin had a great meeting with the President of Portugal. “A remarkable leader.”
Barry Rassin
President 2018-19
November 2018
One early June, more than 30 years ago, I had a business trip scheduled to Las Vegas. I had been a
Rotarian for about six years, and I thought of myself as an active member: I attended every meeting,
I’d served as club secretary, I knew everyone in my club. But for me, Rotary was very much a
community organization. It connected me to Nassau and perhaps even to the Bahamas — but no
farther.
I had never given much thought to Rotary beyond the Bahamas, and it had never crossed my mind to
travel to a Rotary convention. But that spring, I realized that my trip to Las Vegas would coincide with
the Rotary International Convention and thought, why not? I sent in my registration and paid my fees,
never suspecting that the experience would change my life.
When I walked through the doors of that convention, I was stunned. It was one thing to know that I
was part of a global organization with over a million members around the world. It was something else
altogether to stand there in the middle of it. I went to every general session, looked in at every booth
at the House of Friendship, and learned about projects that I hadn’t even known you could do in
Rotary. That convention didn’t just open my eyes. It opened my mind. It inspired me to completely
change the way I saw Rotary, what Rotary could do for me, and what I could do through Rotary. That
inspiration has stayed with me ever since — and is renewed every year, at every Rotary convention.
In June 2019, Rotarians from all over the world will converge in Hamburg to Capture the Moment at
the 110th Rotary International Convention. Many, like me, will have been coming to conventions for
years; many others will be coming for the first time. Whether they’re looking to connect with old
friends, to find inspiration for a new Rotary year, or simply to see what Rotary is all about, each of
them will find their own moment in Hamburg.
Hamburg is a port city that connects Germany to the world and that has been an economic and cultural
hub for centuries. It’s a wonderful place to visit — to stroll the shores of the city’s lake, take a boat trip
on the Elbe River, dine out, hear great music, and explore fascinating museums. It’s also the ideal
place to kick off a European vacation.
If you’re a regular convention goer, you absolutely won’t want to miss out on the friendship and
inspiration you’ll find in Hamburg. And if you’ve never been to a convention, please consider this my
personal invitation. Register at riconvention.org by 15 December for the best rate — and let this
convention Be the Inspiration for your Rotary journey.

II. OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION NEWS
OLD NEWS!
Yes old news but did you know this? Have you told people about this?
Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair-elect Paul Netzel accepts the Award for Outstanding
Foundation, on Rotary's behalf, at the Association of Fundraising Professionals 2017 conference.
Rotary Foundation named World's Outstanding Foundation for 2016
The Association of Fundraising Professionals recognized The Rotary Foundation with its annual
Award for Outstanding Foundation at its 2017 conference in San Francisco.
The award honours organisations that show philanthropic commitment and leadership through financial
support, innovation, encouragement of others, and involvement in public affairs. Some of the boldest
names in American giving — Kellogg, Komen, and MacArthur, among others —are past honourees.
Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair-elect Paul Netzel accepts the Award for Outstanding Foundation, on
Rotary's behalf, at the Association of Fundraising Professionals 2017 conference.
The announcement came on 15 November, known to industry professionals since the 1980s as
National Philanthropy Day. The award was presented 2 May at the AFP’s annual conference.
Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair-elect Paul Netzel accepted the award on Rotary’s behalf, and Eric
Schmelling, Rotary's chief philanthropy officer, also attended the conference. The event drew more
than 3,400 senior-level fundraising professionals from 33 countries.
“In our Centennial year, we are deeply honoured to receive this recognition from the Association of Fundraising Professionals,” said Netzel.
AFP’s committee of judges cited Rotary’s comprehensive campaign to eradicate polio as a major driver
of the selection.
“With the generous support of our members and partners, we’ve taken on some of the toughest humanitarian challenges in the world, none more so than the devastating disease of polio,” said Netzel.
“We will defeat polio, and it will be a landmark achievement for global public health.”
The committee also mentioned that Rotary applies a methodical, purposeful approach to support a
wide variety of causes, from providing clean water to educating the next generation of peace
professionals.
“This award helps to spread our belief that service to humankind truly changes our world, and for that
reason, it is the greatest work of life,” said Netzel.
III. BITS & BYTES FROM OUR DISTRICT 9700

DG John Glassford went to Euroa to receive a cheque for $8,250 from the Euroa Rotary Club. These
were donations from the people of Euroa. As well as a cheque for $250 from the Euroa Garden Club.
During the month donations were received form a lady in Cowra for $10,000 and one from the RC of
West Wyalong for $5,000. The account has over $280,000 in credit and we are looking to our clubs in
both D9700 and D9710 to apply for the first drawdown of $5,000 for distribution via the voucher system.
OTHER DROUGHT ACTIVITY.
The 6 Rotary Clubs and 1 Rotaract Club from Wagga Wagga met last month with some diverse opinions
on the way forward to support the drought.
For further information contact: James Hamilton Club President Rotary Club of Wollundry Wagga
Wagga. Their next meeting will be on November 7th in Wagga Wagga.
There have been many enquiries from Rotary clubs up and down the country on how to help.
As well several offers of help in various ways. One lady from Ganmain wants to deliver care packs
sourced locally in Broken Hill for the School of the Air children. A truckie contacted us on setting up
Adopt-Convoy for our country. So it goes on and the generosity of so many people is heartening to
say the least.
Stay the course and be patient is the way forward. According to anyone who is on the land or relies on
our farmers for their business tells us that this drought is not going away too soon.
Narrandera Rotary Club under the leadership of President John Gown, a farmer, called us from his
header with how Narrandera are approaching the voucher system. More on this once John has finished
the harvest.
At the moment our RAWCS Project has over $290,000 in the account ready for distribution. Donations
are still coming in via our RAWCS Project the latest being $1,630 from the Rotary Club of Boorowa.
Boorowa raised these funds at their Op Shop with fashion parade. Thank you Boorowa.
Please keep sending us your ideas and thoughts. We will do our very best to reply and help you all.

E. DISTEC18 YOUNG SUNDAY DECEMBER 9th 2018.
N.B. The new Date SUNDAY December 9th. 2018.
Yes we are doing it again in 2018 as DisTec17 was a great success and Distec18 will be even better.
So please put the date SUNDAY DECEMBER the 9th 2018 in your diary. Then book for a place which
will be well sort after.
This seminar or training day for internet users (ALL of us) is essential going forward!
DGE John McKenzie, PP Paul Murray (D9700 Communications Director) and PP Geraldine Rurenga
(D9700 Trainer and Membership Director), invite you to come along and learn.
The event will be at the Young Hall now known as the Hilltops Council Hall.
F. GRIFFITH AVANTI GOES PINK.
One club that has a lot of fun both raising funds and awareness, and just having a good old time, is
Griffith Avanti:
G. ORANGE ROTARY CLUB
Orange RC President Clivia Rotarian Gary Bone (their Youth Director) attended the school assembly at
Glenroi Heights Public School to hand over the first batch of books that they are donating to the school
this year. The system is that they donate a book on behalf of each of their guest speakers – instead of
giving them a gift – and so each book is inscribed with the name of one of their guest speakers.
President Clivia had fun handing some books to each of the school's student leaders.
H. HATS OFF TO WOLLUNDRY WAGGA WAGGA ROTARY CLUB
I. E-CLUB OF DISTRICT 9700
President Marilyn Roberts sent in a report on the work being done by from their member Mal Dunnett
and his wife Rosie. They are doing an amazing job in the Solomon Islands.
Our pilgrimage began in Orange where we met for training and preparation for the journey to Santa
Ysabel. Training commitment was three Saturday training sessions and fortnightly Pijin sessions via
Zoom. Team members for 2018 were Father Mal Dunnett, Rosie Dunnett, Alexandra (Alex) Dunnett,
Vicki Kaylock, Angela Calvert and Amy Watterson.
Thank you President Marilyn for the story and see you all on the 13th November via ZOOM!
J. ROTARY CLUB OF YOUNG DREAM CRICKET
Dream Cricket is underway in Young with the Rotary Club of Young.
“Thanks to Brendan and the team from Hennessy Catholic College for helping Rotary with the organising again this year”.
K. ROTARY CLUB OF GRIFFITH PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARDS
Susan and I attended the Griffith Rotary Club’s annual pride of workmanship awards. It was also the
DG Visit! We had a wonderful time with Griffith Rotary Club and their guests a total of 72 attended the
evening. Thank you President Reg Erskine and your members for the generous hospitality and warm
greetings.
President Greg reported in their bulletin: “The big event of the evening was the Pride of Workmanship
Awards. And once again Paul Condon, Vocational Services Director, ably assisted by Greg Murphy did a
fantastic job in selecting and organising the participants and their guests. In all over 45 award winners
and their guests attended the evening. The award showcases the enormous talent and dedication that
the business community of Griffith places on their employees’ professionalism and commitment to
customer service.
To be eligible to receive an award an employee needs to go above and beyond the normal expectations
of their job description and list of duties. Only those employees who consistently perform exceptionally
well can be presented with this awarded. In all there were 10 award winners from a very diverse range
of business enterprises including banking, entertainment, real estate and other industry groups.
Unfortunately 2 award nominees were unable to attend at the last minute due to other commitments.
The evening was a fantastic success. My congratulations go not only to the winners but also all the
other entrants who missed out on an award this time.
L. ROTARY CLUB OF WOLLUNDRY WAGGA WAGGA UPDATE
“The main major community event was the Gears & Beers Festival involving all available club members, Rotarians
from other clubs, and volunteers from various community groups. The community event organised and managed by
our club has enormous benefits to the City of Wagga Wagga and the wider community in the forms of community
spirit and health as it is a family event and economic benefits including placing the city on the map.
Attracting 2500 cyclists to and from within the City is a major achievement followed by festival afterwards. As we all
know there is a great deal of work behind the scenes to organise and I especially wish to thank the Gears & Beers
committee members ably lead by Phil and Peter. A number of club members said they were approached by
members of the public thanking them for their efforts.
Gears & Beers festival has raised funds of approximately $150,000+ for the general community account which is
quite close to the annual budget approved in June”. By President James Hamilton Wollundry Wagga Wagga RC.
IV. RYLA UPDATE.
Email to PDG George Weston from Lyndall McGrath RYLA D9710 Chair
Hi George
It was good to hear from you. As of the closing of the Early Bird applications I have 15 RYLArians (5 from D9700 and 10 from D9710). This number is up from this time last year. Leaving things to the
last minute seems to be a very hard habit for people to break – even with a financial incentive. Last
year ¾ of my applications came in the last week of November so I’m confident we will receive 40+
from the two Districts but the cut-off date.
Last year I systematically telephoned all the Club Presidents in D9710 after the Early Bird cut off.
There always seems to be a percentage of Rotarians that respond better to telephone calls than
emails. I am planning to telephone D9710 Presidents early next week.
I hope the combined YE weekend was a success. I’m sure it would have been a wonderful time. I am
putting together another newsletter for the RYLA committee and mentors that I will cc you into for
your information.

V. MEMBERSHIP IDEA SATELLITE CLUB.
STRATFORD’S YOUNG ROTARY CLUB CELEBRATES. {ENGLAND}
It's only just turned one, but already the Rotary Satellite Club of Stratford has achieved great things in
the community. Last Thursday members of the group, along with members of neighbouring Rotary
clubs and Marion Johnston, the Rotary District Governor gathered for a meal to celebrate the club's
first birthday.
Chairman Daniel Stieller says the club started with 10 members last September
District governor Marion Johnston (left) and Daniel Stieller (right) presented certificates of service to Barrie Smith (second from left) and Mitchell Brown as well as Mel Cook (absent).
The club's first goal was to purchase three defibrillators to be placed in the three rest homes in
Stratford for public use.
With a total cost of over $6000, this goal was a lofty one, but the dedicated and determined young
Rotarians managed to reach it in under a year.
Daniel says it was thanks to the support of the community they were able to raise so much in so little
time.
"Our first major event as a club was a quiz night at which we were able to raise a third of our total goal
in that one night."
The satellite group was started after Daniel was sponsored by the Stratford Rotary Club to attend the
Rotary Young Person Leadership Awards (RYLA), a week-long leadership development programme for
18 to 24 year olds hosted and sponsored by Rotary.
He came back motivated to get involved with Rotary while making it more relevant to a younger age
group.
Now the satellite group is sponsoring another young person, Kaitlyn Bishop, to attend the next RYLA
event and Daniel says he looks forward to the group continuing to grow.
