THE ROLE OF THE TONGUEQ:What is the function of the tongue?A: Your tongue actually has many functions. Forone thing, it is essential to speech. You could speakintelligibly with no teeth, but you could not dowithout a tongue. The tongue also helps you movefood around in your mouth so that you can chewit properly and position it for swallowing and, ultimately, digesting. It also helps with cleaning themouth, sweeping about and plucking particles offood from the nooks and crannies of the mouth. The tongue also exerts subtle but necessary pressureon teeth, helping to keep them in line. And whenteeth are erupting, the tongue coaxes them intotheir proper positions. The tongue is also the homeof your taste buds. They are what help make foodappealing, a critical factor in getting the nutritionyou need. In combination with your nose, the centerof the olfactory (smell) sense, the taste buds discernsalty, sour, sweet and bitter tastes and meld them intoa pleasant combination. The tongue, as you can see, is essential to yourquality of life. Like any other part of the body, it issusceptible to disease, like cancer. When the dentistexamines you, he or she looks not only at your teethand gums, but at all the tissue in your oral cavity. The next time you visit your dentist, ask about howyou can keep your tongue healthy.

Catholic school to open in Downers GroveBy EVAN SHIELDS

[email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – A new high school focusing on classical education and the Catholic faith will open this fall in Downers Grove.

The Chesterton Academy of the Holy Family will be in session as of Aug. 24 at the First Presbyterian Church, 339 Fourth St.

The co-ed, private high school will offer an integrated classical curricu-lum that addresses the humanities, math, science, music, art and how they all connect, according to co-founder Miriam Tierney. Students will work without computers or iPads, and the academy will start every day with a Catholic mass.

“You do all of that, so you’re kind of thinking like a whole person,” co-founder Julie Bowles said.

Bowles, a Downers Grove resident, said she had been looking for a school for her two sons.

“There weren’t any that had a Cath-olic curriculum,” she said.

Bowles and a couple of friends de-cided to start a new school that would meet their needs. They settled on Down-ers Grove for the location because it was central to where they were getting

responses from prospective students and they wanted to be near a train line.

The academy is drawing attention in several area communities, according to Tierney, who lives in Western Springs. She said the school has received ap-plications from Downers Grove, West-mont, La Grange, Oak Park, Aurora and Naperville, among others.

“A lot of people want this type of ed-ucation for their kids,” she said.

Tierney said prior to establishing the academy she was homeschooling her children because she couldn’t find a school that was right for them.

Bowles said the group has been plan-ning the Chesterton Academy for about a year. They’ve hosted informational meet-ings to get the word out and the inaugural class is expected to have 25 students.

“We have been overwhelmed at the

• Suburban Life DGR 3Downers Grove council talks preservation

By EVAN SHIELDS [email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – The Down-ers Grove Village Council considered the formation of a committee to study changes to the village’s historic pres-ervation ordinance at a meeting July 7.

The committee was proposed by Mayor Martin Tully, who said commu-nity input is needed on the matter.

“This is a bigger issue than all of us,” he said.

Historic preservation has been a hot topic recently, as crews tore down the Edwards House, an 1890s Queen Anne Victorian on Maple Avenue, in June.

Residents were pleased with the idea of the committee.

Ken Lerner, chairman of the Pierce Downers Heritage Alliance, said the events of past months show the need for it.

“Obviously this is a time when the community has a tremendous amount of interest,” he said.

Resident Gordon Goodman said he hopes the committee would look at preservation efforts in surrounding communities.

Village Manager David Fieldman said village administrators would set the groundwork for the committee with a proposed timeline. The commit-tee likely would work closely with the Architectural Design Review Board.

The council was scheduled to hear a first reading July 14 of a resolution to form the committee as an ad hoc sub-committee of the board.

Also on July 7, the council reject-ed proposed changes to the historic preservation ordinance brought forth by commissioner Bob Barnett, who agreed the demolition of the Edwards House revealed the failings of the cur-rent iteration.

“The events of the last eight to 10 months have heightened this subject in terms of its importance,” he said.

Proposed changes included:• Allowing property owners to opt

out of a historic district• Requiring a mimimum of 33 per-

cent of structures in a proposed his-toric district meet at least two of the criteria for landmark designation

• Allowing for exterior modification reimbursements for property own-ers of up to $5,000 for a single project, among other incentives for property owners who undertake historic preser-vation measures.

Barnett said the original histor-ic preservation ordinance was intro-duced in 2007 to allow for the creation of historic districts and to help homes get historic landmark status. He said no historic districts have been estab-lished in that time, and two houses have achieved landmark status.

The proposed changes were defeat-ed by a 5-2 vote, with Barnett and com-missioner Greg Hose in favor.

Hose said changing the ordinance would be an interim action to help resi-dents pursue historic preservation and that more work could be done in the future.

“I think these are good first steps of preserving the history of Downers Grove,” he said.

Commissioner William Waldack said the changes would make it harder to save historic landmarks.

“You can call it historic preserva-tion, but if you make it tougher … you can call it open season on polar bears

and call it environmental protection,” he said.

Commissioners David Olsen, Bill White and Gina Vattimo all felt chang-es to the ordinance should be voted on later.

Tully said none of the proposed changes would have helped save the Edwards House, and other matters such as the village’s comprehensive plan and zoning map need to be consid-ered when discussing the ordinance.

He said the Architectural Design Review Board has been studying ordi-nance options for several months and that its ideas should be considered be-fore any changes are made.

The demolition of the historic Edwards House, which occurred in June after months of discussion between advocates and officials, is a motivating factor behind the Village Council’s consideration of a preservation committee.

Downers Grove resident starts 100+ Who Care chapterBy EVAN SHIELDS

[email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – After Jay Sebben made a New Year’s resolution to give to charity, he took it one step further by including more than 100 other people in his efforts.

The Downers Grove res-ident founded the Chicago chapter of 100+ Who Care, a professional organization that donates to nonprofits on a quarterly basis.

The group was formed ear-lier this year after Sebben heard about the idea from a friend in Iowa. Sebben had a lot of contacts in Chicago, and decided he could get a chapter up and running.

The group met for the first time in May, and par-ticipants all brought a blank check made out for $100. If they wanted, attendees could nominate a charity to which they felt the chapter should donate.

Three nominees were pulled from a hat, and whoev-er nominated the selected non-

profits gave a pitch about why that charity should receive the funds. Then all the members voted on which charity should get the money.

Whatever nonprofit re-ceived the most votes got a check from all the attendees.

“All the money goes direct-ly to the local charity,” Sebben said.

In the first vote, Pala-tine-based nonprofit WINGS narrowly beat the competi-tion. The charity, which helps victims of domestic violence, received $10,200 in donations.

WINGS CEO Rebecca Darr said in a news release that the nonprofit owns and operates a safe house in the northwest suburbs and is building a shel-

ter on Chicago’s southwest side.

Both are “safe havens for Chicago area women and their children to escape domestic vi-olence or homelessness,” she said.

Sebben said he wanted to start the chapter because it’s “highly impactful.” A charity may not even know it’s being nominated.

“It’s very kind of spur of the moment. That’s kind of the fun,” he said.

The two nominated non-profits that don’t win the grand prize still get height-ened awareness, Sebben said, and some donors even give ad-ditional money to a runner-up. Winners cannot be nominated for a year after receiving the group donation.

Sebben anticipates the chapter will continue to grow with each meeting. He said he expects about 150 people to attend the next event, which will be held Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. at Knoll Modern Furniture, 222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza #1111, Chicago.

“It’s very kind of spur of the moment.

That’s kind of the fun.”

The importance of heartwormprevention

By Diane Krieger Spivak

Heartworm prevention is critical toyour pet’s health because heartworm canbe fatal to your dog or cat.

It’s a progressive disease transmit-ted to your pet by mosquitoes, taking sixmonths for the larvae to mature into adultheartworms which can live for five to sev-en years in dogs and two or three years incats. The earlier it is detected, the betteryour pet’s chance for survival, accordingto the American Heartworm Society. Pre-vention is critical because there are few,if any, early signs, so detecting the pres-ence of heartworm by testing throughyour veterinarian is important.

Heartworm affects dogs and cats dif-ferently. The foot long worms live in theheart, lungs and blood vessels in dogs, causing severe lung disease, heart failureand damaging other organs.

In cats heartworms rarely survive toadult stage, but immature heartwormscan cause heartworm associated respi-ratory disease, or HARD. The medicationused to treat dogs can’t be used in cats.

Prevention is the only way to protect cats. The signs of heartworm in dogs often

don’t show up in the early stages. Symp-toms can include mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue, decreasedappetite and weight loss. In later stagespets can develop heart failure and a swol-len belly from excess abdominal fluid.Dogs with many heartworms can developblockages of blood flow in the heart, that,if not immediately removed, is usually fa-tal.

Heartworm disease in cats can includecoughing, asthma-like attacks, periodicvomiting, lack of appetite and weight lossor swollen belly. Unfortunately, the onlysign in some cats is collapse or suddendeath.

Dogs should be tested yearly. Puppiesunder seven months can begin heartwormprevention treatment before testing be-cause it takes six months for a dog to testpositive.

Cats can be screened through an anti-body test or ultrasound.

To learn more about Heartworm pre-vention contact the experts atAll Creatures Great and Small locatedat 4945 Forest Ave., Downers Grove, IL630-852-0910.

Police hold Downers Grove woman on heroin delivery chargeBy JUAN PABLO GARCIA [email protected]

A Downers Grove woman with a history of drug dealing is being held on $100,000 bail after police found 2.1 grams of heroin in her car, according to Assistant Cook County State’s Attor-ney David Shin.

Nicole T. Drane, 31, of the 5000 block of Dunham Road, was arrested June 29 in the 1300 block of Chicago Street in Elgin by the Illinois State Police North Central Task Force and charged with one count of manufacture and delivery of heroin, a Class 1 felony, court docu-ments stated.

In December 2014, Drane was suspect-

ed of dealing heroin in the area of Hanover Park, Shin said. As a result, the task force requested a search warrant of her car and its occupants. After observing Drane alleged-ly delivering narcotics in Schaumburg, they ex-ecuted the warrant and found seven packs of heroin.

Drane appeared in court June 30 before Cook County Judge Joseph Cat-aldo and was ordered held on $100,000 bail, requiring a source of bail hearing prior to acceptance of bail. This mea-sure was requested to make sure bail funds do not come from illicit activity,

since Drane does not have a formal job, according to the court documents.

Her next court date is 9 a.m. July 23 in the Rolling Meadows courthouse, court documents stated.

This is not Drane’s first offense, according to Shin. In 2004, authorities found heroin on her when she was stopped for a traffic violation. Drane was charged with Class 1 felony man-

ufacture and delivery of a controlled substance and sentenced to two years of probation that March.

The probation was terminated un-successfully in February 2006 after she sold cocaine to an undercover Maywood Police Department officer, Shin said.

She was charged with Class 2 felo-ny manufacture and delivery of a con-trolled substance and Class 4 felony possession of a controlled substance. Drane was sentenced to two years of probation, which terminated unsuc-cessfully in February 2008, according to Shin.

Because of her prior felony convic-tions, her most recent offense is non-probational, he said.

St. Mary of Gostyn’s Spring BasketProgram delights children in need

By Denise Freese

Somewhere in Kentucky lives a littlegirl who has touched many hearts andinspired the giving of clothing and toysto many other needy children, and shedoesn’t even know it. This little girl wason a list of children to be “adopted” atChristmastime, where the donor wouldprovide winter clothing that the littlegirl badly needed. The girl’s donor wasKaren Hader, a parishioner at St. Mary ofGostyn.

Although Karen never met therecipient of the winter clothing and toysshe purchased, the experience touchedher heart. “ In the spring, I thought of thelittle girl and wondered if she needed anyclothing or toys for spring and summer,”said Karen. “I thought she might needshorts and t-shirts, and maybe somebubbles or sidewalk chalk.”

Karen realized there aremany “drives”during the winter holidays and for schoolsupplies, but there didn’t seem to be anyfor spring. “I had no way of contacting

the little girl, so I realized that she wasput into my life to “pass it along,” saidKaren. “I received enthusiastic supportfrom SMG, and we got the word out aboutSpring Baskets through the website, email blasts, and in the bulletin.” Karenreceived help with the program from SMGparishioners Amy Laverty and DanielleHeyer. She worked with KathleenLangdon at Catholic Charities in Jolietto get information about the recipients(age, gender, sizes). Catholic Charitiesdistributes the baskets.

Karen added that the program isa great way to get children involved ingiving to and thinking of others. Youngerchildren can help pick out the clothingand toys and arrange them in the basket.Older children can use the program as agreat Lenten project or to fulfill servicehours.

Karen’s next step is to get morechurches involved with the Spring Basketprogram. She hopes to add at leastone more church next year. For moreinformation about donating to next year’sSpring Basket program, please contact:

Increase in expenses has village mulling service cuts

By EVAN SHIELDS [email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove officials aren’t ruling out the possibility of cutting services because of increasing expenses and leveling revenues.

At a workshop meeting July 7, Vil-lage Council commissioners all ex-pressed a desire to a least talk about service cuts in light of the precarious financial situation.

Village Manager David Fieldman said it’s likely Downers Grove’s expens-es will exceed its revenues in the near future. Factors driving up village ex-penses include salary increases, health benefits costs and public safety pen-sions, he said, all of which are expected to keep growing moving forward.

Revenues, Fieldman said, could lev-el off because of a proposed reduction of state income tax revenue, a proposed property tax freeze and slow sales tax growth over the past year.

The income and property tax issues are being discussed at the state level. Fieldman said there was only a 1 per-cent growth in sales tax in Downers Grove from 2013 to 2014.

Possible solutions Fieldman suggest-ed to the council include reducing per-sonnel expenses, consolidation, enhanc-ing the village’s revenue base, working with the Downers Grove Economic De-velopment Corp. to increase the village’s sales tax base and cutting some services. Services listed on the village website in-clude snow removal, pothole and side-walk repair, and garbage collection.

All commissioners said it would be a good idea to look at services the vil-lage provides and places to cut back. Commissioner David Olsen said if the state reduces Downers Grove’s income tax revenue and prevents the village from being able to raise property taxes while sales taxes stay flat, cutting ser-vices would be the only way to reduce expenses.

Commissioner Bob Barnett said it’s necessary to evaluate the issue now be-cause it’s reasonable to expect village expenses will increase 6 to 8 percent annually.

Rotary works to keep GroveFest vendors local

To the editor:In response to [the] July 1

“More affordable, local flavor needed at GroveFest” [Sound Off item]:

Every year in preparation for GroveFest we contact local restaurants first and to make it more affordable to them we offer each space at half price to that of outside vendors.

This year we even reached out to the restaurants [that] are coming to town and have not opened yet. The challenge for them is not the price of the space, but being able to have the adequate amount of staff to operate both the fest booth and their restaurant. This year we have decreased the amount of big carnival vendors to make room for lo-cal restaurants from Lombard,

Hinsdale and Willowbrook. We do our best to keep

GroveFest with a community feel and every year we are in search of new local restaurants to participate. If you have a fa-vorite restaurant you would like to see at next year’s GroveFest, feel free to email that suggestion to [email protected].

While America was honoring its 239th birthday on the most glorious weekend of the year, Chamber630 was celebrating right along with our great country; a big difference was that it was the first birthday of Chamber630.

As I reflect on all that has transpired in the last year, “im-pressed with these ridiculous-ly great Members,” comes to mind. I won’t bore you with details, but these folks have worked very hard to achieve the most optimal business environment possible.

A colleague and friend of mine has a favorite saying, “High tides float all boats.” Since that friend now is running the tollway, let’s hope he doesn’t have to worry anymore about boats, but his saying holds true. When a successful business moves in down the road, it helps all sur-rounding businesses to succeed. Business has no borders.

When Chamber630 was “born,” the sole purpose was to do something great for business, and it’s so apparent that we’ve fulfilled that purpose, we will once again be celebrating the successful Members of Chamber630 at an awards ceremony on Sept. 17 at the beautiful Tivoli Theatre.

The Business Excellence category will take nominations for companies involved in hospitality, retail, business services, professional and industrial. Past winners include Sound Check Entertainment, Heritage House Florists, Wannemaker’s, Americraft and Wenzel Select Properties, to name a few.

The Community Contribution Awards will go to one nonprofit organization and one philanthropic company. Some past winners are West Suburban Community Pantry, Hope’s Front Door and Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence. For philanthropy, AT&T, Midwestern University and Perma-Seal have been recognized.

The Individual Awards recognize one young professional and a person deserving of lifetime achievement recognition. The latter has been awarded to Jan Kopis, The Honorable Tim-othy McJoynt, B.J. Boyd, Willis and Shirley Johnson, Gregory Beggs, Jim Russ Sr. and so many other great, great leaders.

If you do business at a place that always provides great customer service and goes above and beyond for you, please provide them a nomination. It’s important to celebrate success! You can visit Chamber630.com to nominate your favorite busi-ness. Just click the banner at the top. The deadline is approach-ing, so don’t hesitate.

I look forward to seeing you at the Tivoli in September when we celebrate your best business.

Laura Crawford is the president & CEO of Chamber630.

It seems the buzz surrounding the West Nile virus in Illinois quiets more every summer.

That’s not a reason, however, to not take precautions to reduce your risk to exposure.

The DuPage County Health Department, according to its website, has made four positive tests of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus so far this year, and Cook County has discovered 15 positive pools this year. The Will County Health Department last week in Bolingbrook collected its first batch of mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus.

In 2014, there were 44 human cases of West Nile in Illinois, according to the Illinois De-partment of Health. There were three deaths, including one in DuPage County. Those fig-ures are down from the 117 human cases and 11 deaths in 2013 and 290 human cases and 12 deaths in 2012.

Human cases started to spike after only five were reported in 2009. In 2010, there were 61 human cases of West Nile virus, including four deaths. There were 34 human cases and three deaths in 2011.

West Nile virus is most commonly spread by infected mosquitoes. It can cause fever, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord).

There are steps you can take to protect yourself from being bitten by a West Nile-in-fected mosquito. Follow these tips from the health department:

• Wear shoes, socks, long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors for long periods of time or when mosquitoes are most active – usually dawn and dusk.

• When possible, avoid the outdoors during peak biting times – dawn and dusk.

• Spray clothing with insect repellent.• Apply insect repellent sparingly to

exposed skin by following label directions. Some experts recommend lower concentra-

tions for children. Check with your doctor before applying insect repellent on infants, and wash your hands after using insect repellent.

• Look for EPA-labeled products contain-ing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535.

It also is important to eliminate mosquito breeding sites from around your residence. Mosquito eggs can develop in any standing water that lasts more than five to seven days. Follow these health department tips:

• Turn over children’s wading pools and toys when not in use.

• Drill holes in the bottom of recycling and trash containers that are left outdoors.

• Change water in birdbaths twice a week.• Fix leaky faucets. They provide water

where mosquitoes can breed.• Drill holes in window boxes and flower

planters to prevent water from pooling.• Aerate ornamental ponds or stock with

mosquito-eating fish.• Keep pools clean and chlorinated.• Eliminate standing water in your prop-

erty.Take proper precautions this summer to

reduce your exposure to the West Nile virus.

National anthem etiquetteI would like to thank the Pleasantdale

Park District for another wonderful holi-day fireworks display. And to the person who had to sing the national anthem with people screaming in between that person’s singing, and also shooting off fireworks while the person was sing-ing, I find it very rude. It is not an easy song to sing, and anybody who starts screaming before the end of the national anthem has no respect for it. … And the people who I know did not have physical disabilities, especially the young children running around and teenagers. Stand up when the national anthem is played.

Plan a new paradeThe Downers Grove Fourth of July pa-

rade needs a total makeover. It’s become a parade of self-righteous people pushing their agendas. We need a new director or we need to pump some life into the celebration of the day.

Patience on the roadI’d like to ask the citizens of Down-

ers Grove to not become numb to the bumper stickers that ask for patience since there’s a student driver behind the wheel. If … the car is going a little bit too slow for your taste, or they don’t exercise the option to turn right on red, please don’t honk. Please don’t make it any more difficult for a child to learn how to drive in a controlled environment.

Go District 58 grounds crewMany don’t realize the efforts custodians

put in all summer to prepare their build-ings for the upcoming year. While teachers and the vast majority of staff are enjoying the summer off, these workers are doing what they do best: Cleaning, waxing, painting, grounds work, and I’m sure many other duties for very little pay according to their contract. They deserve credit! Thanks

to all summer workers in District 58.

Liking LaMantia’s workI thought I’d throw out a compliment [in

Sound Off] because we had a driveway and cement sidewalk and landscaping done by LaMantia Enterprises in Downers Grove and they did a phenomenal job. In this day and age with the complaints all around, I thought sometimes it’s nice to hear some good things.

Take care around lawn chemicalsIn response to the lawn professional: No,

just because you have a spraying license and apply lawn chemicals according to some industry-set guidelines, the poisons in the lawn products do not magically become nontoxic. Of 30 commonly used lawn pesticides, regardless of the quan-tity used, 19 contain possible or probable carcinogens, 13 are linked with birth defects, 21 with reproductive effects, 15 with neurotoxicity, 26 with liver or kidney damage, 27 are sensitizers and/or irri-tants, and 11 have the potential to disrupt the endocrine (hormonal) system.

Bicyclists and motoristsWhen traveling at a slower speed than

vehicular traffic, bicyclists must ride as close to the right-hand edge as is safe and practicable. … Safe and practicable will be determined by a cyclist, not by a motorist who feels it is irksome to be courte-ous and safe. The League of American Bicyclists suggests that when the lane is of insufficient width for a motor vehicle and bicyclist (less than 14 feet) then the bicyclist should take the full lane.

D-58 OKs preliminary budgetBy EVAN SHIELDS

[email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Board of Education had a productive meeting July 13, addressing a proposed budget for the coming school year as well as technology upgrades.

The board approved all items 5-0. Board members James Paul and Sallie Ann Lupescu were absent.

The board greenlighted the dis-trict’s preliminary budget for the 2015-16 school year.

According to board documents, the budget includes $63.8 million in reve-nue and $63.4 million in expenses. The 2014-15 budget contained $63.9 million in expenses and $62 million in revenue.

The preliminary budget includes $38.5 million devoted to salaries, up from $37.6 million the previous year.

District Controller Jim Popernik said the district anticipates being “very close” to even on expenses and revenue for 2015-16.

However, it is still owed $1.4 million from the federal and state governments for the 2014-15 budget, he said. The fed-eral funds should be sent soon, but the state money may not be available until August.

“We’ll get the money when the state has the money and distributes it,” Popernik said.

Board members did not discuss the preliminary budget.

The board will host a budget work-shop meeting Aug. 24, as well as a pub-lic hearing on the budget at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Longfellow Center, 1435 Prai-rie Ave., before giving final approval later in the year.

The board also approved purchas-ing two technology upgrades.

The first is a firewall upgrade, which will cost $52,828.80.

According to board documents, the district’s wireless network was signifi-cantly stressed during the last school year, and the upgrade is needed to help with network traffic.

The district will purchase a Dell SonicWALL Supermassive 9000, which will include a three-year software li-cense.

The board also approved spending $24,288 to purchase 352 Apple TVs, which will be used to display content from student devices.

James Eichmiller, director of inno-vative technology and learning for the district, said the TVs will take some of the traffic off the wireless network, which will ease the congestion.

number of families that are coming to our events,” Bowles said.

For now, class will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, but that may be a temporary home until the school finds a more permanent or larger space.

“I see us growing, just by the re-sponse so far, really quickly in the next two years,” Tierney said.

The Chesterton Academy will be led by Jon Beane, a Downers Grove native who was a faculty member at the Rhodora J. Donahue Academy in Ava Maria, Fla., and has more than 17

years of teaching experience in classi-cal curriculum schools.

“I am genuinely excited about re-turning to my hometown after a 29-year hiatus,” Beane said in an acad-emy news release. “But I am so much more excited about helping start a classical school in Chicago.”

• CUTSContinued from page 8

Commissioner Bill White said if Downers Grove decides to consider cutting programs, it’s important to make sure residents understand how they will be affected.

Commissioner Gina Vattimo said the village needs to do whatever it can to grow revenues.

“I’m OK with increasing property taxes for operation,” she said. Vattimo later contacted Suburban Life and said

she made the statement sarcastically.White also suggested the village

urge the Economic Development Corp. to increase the sales tax base however possible.

Fieldman said Downers Grove has undergone a 15-percent staff reduc-tion over the past several years, and is not interested in cutting back more. The village went into a “crisis mode” during the recession in 2008, he said, making significant cuts to balance the budget.

“This is not that same amount of urgency,” he said.

“A lot of people want this type of education

for their kids.”Miriam Tierney

Veneers can improve the appearance of your teeth

By Denise Freese

It’s nearly impossible to have perfectteeth without assistance from your den-tist. Twice-yearly check-ups help keepteeth clean, and developing problemscan be detected early and taken care ofquickly and less expensively. While theshape and size of your teeth, and theexistence of gaps, can be genetic, otherissues can be the result of what you eatand drink, whether or not you grind yourteeth, and how well and how often youclean them.

Dental veneers, also referred to asporcelain veneers, are wafer-thin, cus-tom-made shells of tooth-colored ma-terials, according to www.webmd.com,that are designed to cover the front sur-face of teeth and improve their appear-ance. The shells are bonded to the frontof the teeth, and can change their color, shape, size, and length.

Veneers are a popular choice for pa-tients looking to fix teeth discoloration,

or teeth that are worn down, chipped,or broken. Veneers can help close largegaps between teeth, and can also im-prove the appearance of teeth that aremisaligned, misshapen, or uneven.

The website states that dental ve-neers can be made from porcelain orfrom resin composite materials. Whileporcelain resists stains better thanresin and offers better light-reflectingproperties similar to those of naturalteeth, resin veneers are thinner and re-quire less removal of the tooth’s surfacebefore the veneer is adhered.

Veneers offer several advantages topatients; they are stain resistant andare well-tolerated by gum tissue. Theyoffer a natural appearance to the teeth, and the color can be selected to bestmatch a patient’s other teeth. Theycan also make dark teeth appear morewhite. Veneers require only minimalshaping, and may actually strengthenyour natural teeth. For a total smilemakeover, dental veneers may be thebest, most natural-looking way to cre-ate a more beautiful smile. For more in-formation about dental veneers, pleasecontact:

The ballerina leaps, twirls, and landsso beautifully, artistically, and gracefully-- but not at all effortlessly, according toEmily Moser, ballet instructor, Salt CreekBallet. Moser says, “The ballerina mustbe a good actress to make the moveslook effortless, but she’s put in hundredsof hours of training to perform so well.”

While many assume that legs arethe ballerina’s chief concern, all dancingstarts with the core, which is theircenter of balance, stabilizing the wholebody. Moser explains that the core isthe mid-section, including the stomach, back, hips, and sides of the torso. “Thestomach protects the back from injury. The abdominal muscles are engaged inall steps, and promote excellent posture.A strong and flexible core helps thedancers perform better, and reduces therisk of injury.”

At Salt Creek Ballet, all levels ofdancers target their cores. Core strengthtraining means doing class exercises

including about 100 sit-ups, plus leg-lifts, and push-ups. These exercisesengage the midsection’s muscles knownas transverse abdominis, erector spinae, obliques, and lats.

Moser explains that a strong coreis critical for advanced classical balletdancersdoing“pointe technique.” Pointetechnique nessiates supportingtheirbody weight on the tips of fully extendedfeet while wearing toe shoes.

“Dancers must be physically readyfor this rigorous step, usually not until atleast age 10. To avoid spraining an ankleor other injury, they need training andcore muscle strength.”

Ballerinas “on pointe” also practicebalancing, as they strive to stay uprightdespite moving their arms whichredistributes their weight. Strong coremuscles keep the dancers from toppling.

Non-dancers can borrow ballettraining tips to improve their corestrength. A typical workout would focuson abs by doing sit-ups, Pilates moves, and planks. Moser adds that manydancers supplement their training withthese core-activating exercises.

RED STARS: 2 HOUSTON DASH: 1

Copyright Daniel Bartel

Houston, TX. – The Chicago Red Starsearned yet another away win on Sunday nightand reclaimed the top spot in the NationalWomen’s Soccer League (NWSL) standings, defeating hosts Houston Dash 2-1 behindgoals by Vanessa DiBernardo before the breakand Jen Hoy after the break. Houston’s TiffanyMcCarty temporarily leveled the score early inthe second period. While the Red Stars had several half-chancesin the opening stages of the match, the Dashnearly took the lead at the other end, as Ohai’slow centering ball from the right found a wideopen McCarty and the attacker’s mishit shotmade for a comfortable save by goalkeeperMichele Dalton. Houston had another closelook just after the quarter-hour mark, RachaelAxon creating havoc with a cross from the leftand Jessica McDonald failing to make contactwith the ball at the doorstep.Chicago would grab the lead in the 19thminute. Alyssa Mautz’s excellent service fromthe right picked out Vanessa DiBernardo in thecenter of the area and the midfielder found thenet with a clinical finish. The visitors could havedoubled their advantage seven minutes later,Arin Gilliland’s outstanding work on the leftbegging for the centering pass to be tappedhome from close range, only for the well-po-sitioned Mautz to go down under a Camilachallenge that was judged to have been fair byreferee Chris Spivey. The Dash nearly punished their opponentsfor the missed opportunity late in the half, asMelissa Henderson came close to reachingElla Masar’s low cross from the right beforea deflection on the subsequent redirect byMcDonald’s made for a comfortable saveby goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Well insidefirst-half stoppage time, Sofia Huerta had achance to add a second for the Red Stars on aone-on-one with McLeod, but she failed to take

advantage of Jen Hoy’s through ball by firingwide of the frame. After the interval, Chicago picked up rightwhere it had left off, the ball falling right intothe pass of Mautz, whose effort from 23 yardsout sent it skimming off the bar. However, itwould be the Dash finding the net three min-utes from the hour mark, as Dalton was unableto get her fists on an Ohai cross from the rightand McCarty nodded into the empty goal fromthe far post.Chicago outside back Gilliland continued to bea nuisance to the Houston defense, again push-ing up the left in the 60th minute and makingher way to the byline before picking out Huertaat the near post. The rookie forward did well toturn and release a powerful right-footed shotthat whizzed just past the upright.Strike partner Hoy would aim perfectly mo-ments later, as she received the ball at the topof the box courtesy of a Rachel Quon headerand opted for a wicked half-volley that leftMcLeod without a chance on its way inside theright post. Down 2-1, the Dash attempted tocreate quality chances during the remainder ofthe game, but instead it was the road team thatcame close to scoring again when Gilliland’slong-range rocket twelve minutes from full timewhistled inches wide of the left upright. It would be the day’s final noteworthy action, asthe Red Stars put on a clinic in managing a latelead and held on for all three points. The NWSL leaders will honor all eight of theirWorld Cup participants, including their U.S.quartet, ahead of the official “Welcome HomeGame” against Boston Breakers on July 18,which will also serve as the club’s 2015 PrideNight. BURR RIDGE – Lunch at Cooper’s Hawk? As a wine lov-er, it wasn’t hard to convince me. Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant has become known for its wide selection of wines and its carefully paired menu of modern American comfort food.

On a particularly lovely afternoon, I set out with a friend to the location in the Burr Ridge Village Center, and opted for a table on the patio. I ordered a glass of the housemade sangria, a deli-cious wine punch loaded with fresh fruit and served chilled, perfect for the sunny summer day. My companion chose an equally summery peach wine, which she described as fresh and light – sweet, but not syrupy. It is one of a variety of fruit wines produced by Cooper’s Hawk.

We whet our appetites with a starter of Mexican Drunken Shrimp, which were wrapped in bacon and served with fresh guacamole and a butter sauce laced with lime and tequila. The guacamole took center stage, fresh and deli-cious, pairing well with the saltiness of the crisp bacon.

We shared two entrees, opting for beef and chicken.

The Chicken Giardiniera was lightly breaded with panko crumbs and Parmesan, and its crispiness held up well to the vinegars and oils of the fresh giardiniera that topped it. The flavors were lovely, not too spicy, and the thought occurred that this combina-tion would make a delightful sandwich.

The Short Rib Risotto was a satisfying combination of creamy carnaroli rice, tender boneless short ribs and a rich and flavorful wine sauce meld-ing mushrooms, sweet onions, shaved Parmesan and white truffle oil. I’m a sucker for any roast meat with the perfect sauce, and this certainly fit the bill. A sublime comfort food, it almost made me hope for fall weather.

I should mention that every single item on the Coo-

per’s Hawk menu includes a suggestion for one or more of the wines. It’s a great guide and choosing a glass this way only enhances the culinary experience. The extensive menu tempts with seafood, chops, pasta, sandwiches, salads, a calorie-conscious collection and gluten-free dishes.

At Cooper’s Hawk, the desserts are as homespun and classic as the dishes them-selves. The chocolate cake, filled with layers of chocolate mousse and ganache, was outstanding – a decadent treat without the heaviness some full-size desserts impart. The crumbled apple pie was not a slice, but rather a whole personal pie, capped with a flourish of crust and drizzled caramel sauce. Both dishes were served with vanilla ice cream, and definitely sized to share.

All in all, this was a wonderful lunch filled with deliciously satisfying food and great wine. I noticed an extensive children’s menu that offered classic kid fare, but also some alternatives to the typical chicken fingers and pizza that were clever, but no less ap-proachable for the young ones – chicken pot stickers, pasta with homemade meatballs,

junior filet medallions.Founded in Illinois, the

enterprise has several sub-urban restaurants, including a Naperville location. Each includes a Napa-style tasting room, full bar, gift shop and venues for private and corpo-rate events. The combination makes Cooper’s Hawk an ideal

destination for a family cele-bration, lunch with friends or date night. Cheers!

DOWNERS GROVE – Darren Orel likes to keep things simple, especially in the summer.

With players coming and go-ing – elite players often are jetting around the country to compete in elite travel tournaments – the Downers Grove South baseball coach sticks to the basics in the summer, even more so when the majority of players suiting up for the Mustangs are new to the varsi-ty experience.

“We have a lot of guys [out of state] so you have a lot of new fac-es and some younger kids,” Orel said. “We had a couple seniors [against Lyons Township on July 8], but then it was a lot of freshmen who are going to be sophomores and sophomores who are going to be juniors, so it’s a little different feel.”

With so many players Orel has never directly coached seeing action in the summer, the strict fundamentals – getting down bunts, hitting the cut off man, making the correct plays – are emphasized more than wins and losses.

“A lot of fundamental things, the little things we like to empha-size and work on, things that may-be didn’t happen as much on the lower levels or things that need to be cleaned up a little bit,” Orel said.

The summer is kind of an audi-tion for positions, especially pitch-er. Orel tries to set a rotation the best he can and lets several play-ers toe the rubber just to see what skills they possess.

“Matt Channell, he was a back-up infielder for us last year and he’s never pitched before in a high

school game, and he’s out there be-cause he can compete, he can keep the ball around the plate and he’s not going to walk anybody,” Orel said.

“I normally like to give them a pitching rotation. A guy like Zack Jones, I’ll tell him, ‘You’re going to pitch Tuesdays,’ and for him it’s one or two innings. … I’m not going to ask him to come out and throw 50, 60, 70 pitches. Come once a week give me one or two innings,

and he’s done that. Ty McCulloch, same thing.”

Though several players are pulled away from South’s team to compete in travel ball, Orel said there has been a core group pres-ent for all of the games. Over the course of the summer season he has seen them make strides.

While the coaching staff doesn’t track stats in a scorebook, Orel does take notes on each player so the Mustangs can hit the ground

running when the spring season gets started.

“We’ll take notes on every-body,” the coach said. “I keep a card and jot down things about everybody because [the coach-es] will have meetings at the end of the summer and talk about where everybody is. It’s kind of like a tryout for some of these guys, as opposed to the week you get inside in March before the season.”

DGN graduate Gretsch up for ESPY Award

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

DOWNERS GROVE – Kendall Gretsch has come a long way since competing for Downers Grove North’s swim team.

The latest in a string of notable accomplishments was her nomina-tion for an ESPY Award in the cat-egory of Best Female Athlete with a Disability.

Now an elite triathlete, Gretsch has won all five competitions she has entered, including a winning time of 1:21:32 at the International Triathlon Union World Triathlon Grand Final in Edmonton in Au-gust 2014 and the title at the 2015 Monterrey CAMTRI Triathlon American Championships in May.

She will compete in the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Chicago on Sept. 18.

Now a resident of Madison, Wis., Gretsch gained some notoriety be-fore entering the triathlon circuit. While a senior at Washington Uni-versity in St. Louis, Gretsch was part of a group of biomedical en-gineering students who used a 3-D printer to create a prosthetic limb for a teenage girl who lost her arm in an accident.

The 2015 ESPY Awards show airs at 7 p.m. July 15 on ABC.

Summer ball start of process for DGNBy JASON ROSSI

DOWNERS GROVE – When Dallton Baran stepped on the mound July 8, it was a bit of a change.

The Downers Grove North senior-to-be is typically an infielder for the Trojans, and even some of the games during the summer season in which he has played infield have required some adjustments.

“Transitioning from third base to shortstop is a little bit of a change, but I’ve played [shortstop] most of my life so I’m getting back into it,” Baran said.

Playing different players at differ-ent positions is just one aspect of the summer baseball season. For North, which saw 13 seniors from the spring team graduate, just getting used to life at the varsity level is a major goal.

“Some of the things we do, picking up some of our routines, it’s an intro and you’re teaching some of these things on the fly,” head coach Chad Isaacson said. “I’ve not been displeased with the progress, but we have a long way to go. It is going to be a younger team for us. We only have six guys from this past spring that are going to be with us, so there’s going to be a learning curve.”

One of the areas where graduation greatly affected the Trojans was on the mound. Ryan Cantlin is the only pitch-er who threw double-digit innings in the spring who is expected to return for the 2016 season. Senior Tim Brown and juniors James Krick, Tyler Rosen and Nick Taviani pitched only limited innings in the spring. Getting the first glimpses of a pitching staff has been one of the main objectives for Isaacson.

“The biggest thing is figuring out our mound components, and I like some of our options,” the coach said.

In addition to figuring out which pieces might fit where positionally, the

summer also is providing a chance for a new crop of leaders to emerge and the team to start developing chemistry. Ba-ran likely will be one of those leaders, and he has seen the chemistry improve over the course of the summer.

“We’re definitely young and inexpe-rienced right now, but we’ll get in the hang of it,” Baran said. “There’s defi-nitely a lot more chemistry now. From the start [of the summer] to this past week, it’s been a crazy transition how much we’re getting along with each other, just joking around and being fun with each other.”

Isaacson said that between now and spring practices, and even after spring practices start, things can and will change. Players will change positions and spots in the batting order, but the summer is key as the Trojans look to build for next season.

“It is a process. We talk about it being a process with our guys all the time and this is the start of the process. It’s giving us an idea,” the coach said. “The kids have been good. They’ve been respon-sive to what we’ve been doing. ... The in-tro has been installed and now they have an idea of some of the expectations.”
