Overview

Introduction► "Dharwad" means a place of rest in a long

travel or a small habitation. For centuries,Dharwad acted as a gateway between theMalenaadu (western mountains) and theBayalu seeme (plains) and it became aresting place for travellers.

► Spread across 6 administrative divisions-Dharwad, Hubballi, Kalghatagi, Kundagoland Navalgund

► Dry farming is the backbone of theagricultural economy. Agriculture is evennow labour-intensive enterprise

► Lies approximately about 800 mts abovethe sea level, which is why it enjoys amoderate and healthy climate. The districtmay be divided into 3 natural regions, viz.,the Malnad, Semi-Malnad and Maidan

► Combining the twin cities; Hubli acommercial and industrial hub andDharwad an academic and cultural huband the HDMC is the second largestMunicipal Corporation in Karnataka afterBangalore.

Ruled by various dynasties, important dynasties include Chalukyas, Rastrakutas,Vijayanagar, Adilshahi, Mysore kingdom and Peshawas of Pune. In 1962, the towns ofDharwad and Hubli were amalgamated into the Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation. In1830, the southern Maratha country was brought under Regulation VII and the territorieswere formed into one Collectorate called Dharwad District or Zilla. Before trifurcation ofthe district into Gadag and Haveri, the district consisted of 17 talukas.
