Our Annual Thank You

Issue

SCCC’s counselors, Board and staff are happy to an-nounce our new location for services in Watts! Since 2013, we’ve been providing counseling services in collaboration with the Watts Labor and Community Action Committee (WLCAC) through their FSC-Family Source Center. Now SCCC counselors have their own dedicated counseling space in an iconic building reminiscent of SCCC on the WLCAC campus. Stepping inside you will see large rooms, wood floors and gleaming white walls with large windows. This big step forward for the Watts Resiliency Project is thanks to the efforts of Outreach Director Marianne Diaz, her staff of hardworking Outreach counselors, the Trauma & Resilien-cy Training and Services Program, as well as all our donors and supporters who value the program’s goals. The Watts Resiliency Project is on track to serve more than 1,200 clients this year through a range of counseling services, including specialized

trauma treatment services. Our solid relationship with the Watts community has been cultivated over the past 15 years through a targeted investment of time and resources. The community, WLCAC-FSC and the people of Watts tell us they have come to feel greater trust in SCCC and our intention to genuinely serve this diverse and historically rich community.

Those listed on the following pages have made some-thing extraor-dinary happen. I recall it as a vision that was first expressed

to me by SCCC Outreach

Director Marianne Diaz at least 10 years ago, maybe more, as we dreamed about the future. That dream: A separate building dedicated to Outreach Services. I remember saying, “Why not? It could happen.” A confession: I can’t honestly say that at the time I believed it would be possible. Now I know that I under-estimated the power and passion of an inspired therapeutic community and what it can do when it comes together with skill, compassion and hard work. Our building now exists and the energy around it is palpable. Other agen-cies in the area have begun seeking out mental health services for those they serve by approaching us on a nearly weekly basis to inquire how they might work with us. So as we bring trauma-informed counseling services to an underserved/underresourced community, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the Watts community for its welcome and the SCCC community of volunteers, donors, and staff for setting a powerful intention and making it come true. May we all celebrate one of those rare circumstances that, in my opinion and experience, can truly be called inspiring.

You Make All the Difference!Since 1966, our purpose at the South-ern California Counseling Center has been to make a difference in our community. We continue to search for new ways to respond to the needs we see in the world around us, seeking to change people’s lives. I can tell you from personal experi-ence that nothing is more powerful than helping individuals and families discover new strengths in them- selves and in each other. In recent years, the Counseling Center has made huge strides, growing beyond any limitations by implementing important new services, such as trauma treatment, psychiatry, and now our growth through the Watts Resiliency Project. SCCC supporters listed here give us momentum to achieve new goals, reach more people and promote a means of provid-ing mental health services that empower our community.
