The newly formed Advancement Committee comprising membership, sponsorship and grants is off to a good start - all three areas are up compared to last season as we start to join the dots and take a more leveraged, holistic approach to securing support. We are working to increase the number of grants we apply for and have contracted with a grant writer to support this endeavor. Meanwhile, we are recruiting an Advancement sub-committee focused on broadening and deepening corporate sponsorships in addition to hosting more informal working sessions to strategize on our approach to Individual and Family Foundation opportunities. Watch this space - much more to come and we look forward to getting many of you involved. KAY NICHOLS Premier Members and Sponsors are invited to a pre- event reception from 6:00– 6:45 p.m. at Adam W. Herbert University Center Council Members are also invited to view the presentation via livestream in two additional venues: Simulcast Suite at UNF or the Simulcast Suite at Fleet Landing (Atlantic Beach). Please let us know which venue you would like to attend Hello and welcome again to the new year of the World Affairs Council. I hope you were not too unnerved by Dr. Mirsalis as our first speaker of the year, as he gave an excellent education on a very real threat. On another educational note, our Great Decisions Kick-Off Dinner & Dialogue had its largest attendance ever, with over 170 students, faculty, and members hearing a wonderful panel discuss the newly developing relationship between Cuba and the United States. The Great Decisions program culminates with the International Crisis Management Exercise in the spring, but in November, I encourage you to sponsor and attend the Admiral Jonathan T. Howe Academic WorldQuest at the University of North Florida, when 50 high school teams, totaling 200 students, compete to represent Jacksonville at the national contest in Washington, D.C. in April. We have a great lineup of critical issues for students this year, including: peace and conflict, combatting infectious diseases, China and Turkey. Don’t let the students learn more than you! DAVID M. Student Discussion on Cuba

MAGELLAN SOCIETY

2016-2017 Mentor Program

To kick off the new school

year, Great Decisions

students gathered on

September 7 for a timely

discussion on U.S.-

Cuba Rapprochement.

Students took part in

an animated Q&A with

the panelists, asking

questions regarding the

Cuban Adjustment Act,

studying abroad, and the

Cuban political structure.

Afterwards, the room came alive with eager students conversing about the

different issues and how the U.S. can take steps to reconcile the relationship

between the two countries. With delicious Cuban food, lively music, in-depth

discussions, and over 170 people in attendance, the event was a great success! MELISSA BLAKESLEE Council Intern
