Technical Clarification

Revision of Airborne Electromagnetic (AEM) imagery The current report was produced before the final calibrated AEM data for the Lower Balonne Airborne Geophysics Program was made available in September 2003.

The current report uses the preliminary uncalibrated AEM data of September 2002.

Revision of stratigraphic nomenclature for the Lower Balonne area The technical Working Group (TWG) for the Lower Balonne Airborne Geophysics Program adopted a revised stratigraphic nomenclature for the Lower Balonne area in May 2004.

The current report, which was produced before this revision was adopted, uses a slightly different nomenclature, as described in the following tables:

1 Introduction

The purpose of the coring program was to undertake the drilling of bores to provide accurate samples of rock, soil and water for geochemical and hydrogeological assessment and to allow the measurement of electrical conductivity and definition of salt storage and flow in a clear, open hole or a PVC-cased hole, depending on lithology. The preferred technique was PQ Core (80mm), which was to be sampled in the field immediately after withdrawal from the core barrel so to ensure the integrity of the pore fluids for subsequent laboratory analysis.

The coring program provided material for extracting pore fluids and also aided detailed geological interpretation. PQ was selected to provide a large enough core to split and then sample the pristine material in the middle. This is essential for reliable pore fluid analysis, as coring requires the use of drilling mud (water mixed with a drilling lubricant) that often penetrates the core. A large diameter core also facilitates drilling and sample recovery.

Tenders were called for coring at St George in Late September 2002. A restricted tender was undertaken because of the projects time constraints and the specialist drilling techniques needed. The successful tenders, Daly Brothers Pty Ltd, persuaded BRS to choose 4C Core (100mm), as a wider core would provide increased sample recovery and better hole stability due to dry blocking being used rather than wireline recovery.

Additional to coring, the tender required air hammer or air rotary (80mm) drilling of shallow (less than 30 metres), normally consolidated or alluvial/colluvial sediments. This program was to provide the material for EC 1:5 analysis and the open holes were used to conduct slug tests. A multiple number of holes were to be drilled at a given site, with the capacity to case off unstable sections if required.

Piezometer construction (50 mm slotted PVC) was also added to the tender, as several bores were required to be constructed in areas where QDNR observation piezometers did not exist.

2 4C Diamond Core

Coring began on the 17th October and finished on the 9th of November 2002 (24 days) totalling 598.9 metres at 10 locations (Table 1). Coring uses a high rotation speed and slow downward pressure (pull-down), which makes the procedure much slower than air-core drilling. On average, 35 metres of core were retrieved per day. The Bureau of Rural Sciences conducted all geological interpretation (using Field Marshal software), photographs and sampling on site. Lithologic logs are shown in Appendix B. Field logged colour, texture, mineralogy and moisture characteristics are shown in Appendix C. Stratigraphic interpretation is shown in Table 2.

Core was recovered by dry blocking after the completion of each drill run (1.5 or 3 metres), which also made the process slower as the hole became deeper. Excellent core recovery was achieved, apart from some cohesionless sections in LB03, which comprised several thick (2-3 metre) dry sand units. Core recovery was aided by application of drilling mud, which also stabilised the hole. Polymer based muds (BIO-VIS, Polyplus RD and CARBOCELL 400) were used and mixed in above ground sumps. Mud weights varied depending on the material being recovered; generally a thick consistency (10 seconds) was used. At times a bentonite (MAX-CEL) mud was used to stabilise the hole, especially in LB03 due to dry collapsing sands.

3 Sampling

Core was returned inside split 100mm diameter inner barrels. A half PVC split was used to roll out the core. The top of the core was cleaned of drilling mud then measured by the on-site geologist to determine if any sample had been lost or damaged. Second half PVC was placed onto the core then the whole core cut length-ways in half. One half was photographed, sealed and archived in plastic wrap. The other half was sampled for moisture content, pore fluid chemistry and bulk density and geologically logged (the side cleaned of drilling mud), then the remainder was left on-site for disposal. Michael Turner, a PhD student from the Australian National University took several samples for permeability measurements as negotiated with BRS. These samples were taken as full (100 diameter) uncut core before any onsite sampling took place.

Samples were stored on-site in portable refrigerators before being relocated to larger refrigerated storage. Three samples were collected in vials every half metre and/or at every facies change (depending on recovery) EC 1:5, moisture-1 x 185ml vial and pore fluid analysis-2 x 85ml vials. Extraction of pore fluids, EC and moisture analysis was conducted in BRS laboratories at Symonston ACT. Archived core is held at QNR sheds in St George.

4 Down-hole geophysics

Existing bores were geophysically logged prior and during the program as well as the new core sites. At each new drilling site, logs were completed close as possible to the EOH depth. For each bore, two logs were obtained using two probes: an EM39 conductivity log (with the Auslog-Scintrex A34); and a gamma log measured with a slimline 33mm probe (Auslog-Scintrex A75). The main emphasis was placed on the conductivity log, which was always run first in case the hole collapsed during the process. If collapse occurred before a full conductivity log was obtained, the hole was cleaned, then re-logged. Logs were run down-hole and up-hole with values recorded every 5 centimetres, generating a smooth and accurate log. The up-hole log is used as the final version, as the tool returns under its own weight, providing a more accurate depth reading.

Conductivity is measured in milliSiemens per metre (mS/m) with calibration rings (300 mS/m, 1000 mS/m and 3000 mS/m) being used to calibrate the instrument prior to logging. A polynomial stretch is applied between these three points by the AUSWIN software (software used for the Auslog-Scintrex system).

The procedure for running the gamma instrument is the same for the conductivity logger. The gamma tool is smaller than the conductivity probe, producing an offset of 50 cm in the readings at the bottom of the hole. The gamma obtained by this tool is a measure of natural gamma radiation and is recorded in counts per second (cps), and these values are calibrated, converting values into API.

5 Air Hammer Drilling

Air hammer and RAB (Rotary Air Blast) methods were used to drill slug test holes. These methods are the cheapest and quickest method used for geo-technical investigation. The method uses compressed air blown towards the cutting face, which forces the sample upwards to the surface. Contamination of samples can occur during this process, however the method was required to penetrate siliceous zones and to provide a clean hole to conduct slug tests. Samples produced however were also used for lithological and geochemical analysis.

Samples were collected every metre in sealed, plastic bags (to preserve moisture). An archive chip tray was also collected, then geologically logged on site. The only samples not collected and/or chemically tested were contaminated, generally when water injection was necessary where the bore intersected sandy, water-bearing layers. On average, two sites (up to 5 nested holes per site) were completed per day.

6 Piezometer Construction

Three piezometers were installed from the ten locations (Table 3). All methods conform to the minimum construction requirements for water bores in Australia (ARMCANZ 1997).

PVC (Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride)

Bores were constructed using Class 9, 2 inch (50mm) UPVC, with a three metre pre-slotted (1mm) length used for screen intervals.

Gravel Packing

A gravel pack or backfill gravel was placed at the bottom of the hole. The gravel consisted of washed, well-rounded quartz gravel (10mm) containing no shale, mica, clay, dirt, loam or organic material.

Piezometer Development

All bores were developed (cleaned) using compressed air. Developing the bore cleans out the drilling mud so that there is hydraulic connection between the slotted interval and the aquifer. The process draws material through the slots, which increases the permeability at that interval. It is recommended that further developing by pumping or bailing be conducted, as the bore will need to settle after initial development.
