LETTER FROM

THE PRESIDENTLooking back over the previous year’s accomplishments the CSDAA

is moving forward and completing a number of goals set out in its business plan.

It is also 12 months to the day I submitted my President’s Report to the Brisbane general meeting in Queensland - announcing the training development. In reviewing the statements and comments I made on 23rd August 2013, they still reflect my personal views on a number of issues regarding the training, qualifications, membership and the industry perception of the CSDAA.

In the 2nd last paragraph I stated “without the support from current and future members the training qualification will be unsustainable”. This is still the case and a concerted effort by the Executive is required to address this issue.

Feedback I am hearing from a number of suppliers that get around to various contractors isn’t encouraging either. Contractors that defer membership waiting for the training qualification to become available need to be aware of the financial stress placed on the operational budget of the CSDAA.

It is also becoming more evident that this norm will not change, which is disappointing considering the potential the accredited training qualification will offer to the sawing and drilling industry nationally. The CSDAA is a not for profit association and must operate in the black at all times. The current expenditure costs for the next twelve months will exceed our membership revenue and all I ask is for companies to get on board and support your industry.

Since the start of this year the CSDAA has been holding additional State meetings in NSW and VIC. QLD have had their first State meeting on the 12th September and we are searching for committed members in all remaining States and Territories to nominate to chair a meeting. These are informal meetings for 1-2 hours to discuss and table issues relevant to each State. State meetings are an important way to deliver industry information first hand and receive answers to questions that are important to you. We are looking for nominations in S.A, ACT, W.A, and TAS to maintain sufficient coverage for our members. Provided I am given sufficient notice I am prepared to attend each and every meeting as the CSDAA executive representative.

You will be surprised at what you can learn, and pick up through these meetings. During the next twelve months our industry will change on a number of fronts that will affect how you do business - including OHS regulations compliance, finance training, and managing cash flow.

The best advice I can give right now is become proactive rather than reactive. The CSDAA provides transparent and valuable information on specific industry issues. Contractors are encouraged to support and participate in these events for their own betterment nothing more.

CSDAA.COM.AU

When purchasing a new piece of equipment do you purchase outright or finance?

Does this depend on the purchase price of the gear?

Does this depend on your financials or credit report?

There are a few solutions to answer the above questions and they differ for each circumstance, however lets look at paying outright for the gear or commonly known as using your CASH.

Typically, we love to own our gear or equipment - as we believe the amount we paid for this gear adds to our asset base and ultimately increases our wealth. BUT every year “the asset” depreciates by approx 20%. According to our Tax system in 5 years its worth nothing, but in reality the gear is still worth something.

So if we purchase this gear with our CASH, are we building our asset base or is this a myth?

Other than paying with your CASH, as we are well aware there are a few options to look at, from chattel mortgages, leasing, rental finance or asking the supplier to split payments over a few months, hence they fund the purchase for you!

In this example, let’s look at paying for the equipment outright verses financing the same piece of gear over a 3-year term via a rental product. i.e. rent to own.

Purchasing the gear at $20,000 means you either

a) Pay from your cash-flow and start from a negative cash position OR

b) Rent each month for a fixed cost of, example $750 per month.

Mostly the business owner will look at the return on investment (ROI) the gear can give immediately:

> if purchased outright this means you start at -$20,000 (minus), then add the profit made each month to back to status quo.

> if financed this means you keep the profit less the monthly payment AND most importantly you still have the $20,000 in the bank!

With a CHATTLE MORTGAGE you can claim the GST component in your next BAS. i.e. GST of $1818.18 from a $20,000 purchase.

With a RENTAL you claim ALL monthly payments as a tax deduction at the company tax rate of 30%. i.e. $750 per month = a tax deduction of $2700.00.

With a LEASE you claim the interest component ONLY at tax time, per annum.

With CASH, as mentioned above, you need to build your bank account back from the “negative” $20,000 position with your net profit earned from each job.

IS CASH KING?FINANCE VS. OUTRIGHT PURCHASE.

So to financially run a business successfully all of these options need to be considered.

Depending on the business generated from the equipment, if you calculate your operating profit at, say 30%, then typically the $20,000 CASH outlay could be paid back by 12 months, however the accumulative profit takes 36 months / 3-years (in some cases even more) to get back to being even.

So at the end of the day it’s best to ask yourself, do I pay for this gear now or pay by monthly installments?

CASH IS KING so wouldn’t it be best to use it to run your business for important day to day expenses, wages etc and finance the rest.

As the old saying goes, use other people’s money to build wealth!

Interesting Fact: Sometimes it is very hard for business to get good or acceptable interest rates due to the information and paperwork the major banks or lenders require. Please note this is due to the Credit Code they must operate within,

however sometimes the lowest rate, which is normally more difficult to obtain, may not be all that its cracked up to be as some banks require excessive information, lots of signatures, guarantees and very high exit fees if you wish to terminate the loan sooner.

Also, the difference between a full-doc loan at 6% and a low-doc loan at 10% interest on $20,000 over 36 months is $37 per month. Less than a case of your favourite stubbies!

If you would like to know more about the above scenario or get a copy of the calculations please email Darren at [email protected] or 1800 825 640

PROJECT: 1st Armoured Regiment – Robertson Barracks, Darwin, N.T

BUILDER: John Holland Group

PROJECT: The design and construction of a new tank parking apron for the Australian Defence Forces M1 Abram Tank squadrons.

Super City Concrete Cutting was awarded the contract to provide core drilling services to verify the structural properties of the concrete parking apron being installed by John Holland group.

The project details of this mammoth job were to drill 400 test cores 115mm wide x 200mm deep into the parking apron structure; however this could only be done once the parking apron had reached 28 days cure time. The concrete itself was reinforced with revolutionary new wire fibre technology instead of traditional round bar reinforcing meaning that this job was made tougher.

The contract specified that vacuum anchoring need to be used to complete the test drilling; this decision played a major part in Super City’s choice in purchase the Diamond Products Ultimate Drilling Machine.

This machine is self sufficient in terms of power and water supply, comes with a vacuum drill base, a tachometer, is driven by a Honda engine with electric start and has a drilling range from 100mm diameter up to 600mm diameter controlled by a variable speed valve. This precise drill motor is designed to enhance productivity, efficiency and effectiveness on any big job.

The unit was delivered into Darwin with post delivery checks and machine testing completed by TYROLIT’s Cameron McLean. The test drilling which was completed at Super City’s depot in Darwin was very impressive, producing 115mm diameter holes 150mm deep and taking only an average of 3 minutes per hole to complete on automatic drill mode.

As Stated by Alan Torrance the manager of Super City Darwin “This purchase will enable our company to increase productivity and provide our operators with less manual stress during the stages of the work”

The work will commenced in May 2014 and is due to be completed by August 2014.

GoGetta is a division of Silver Chef Limited, a publicly listed Australian company with offices in Australia, New

Zealand and Canada, that has been providing equipment funding solutions to small business owners for almost 30 years. GoGetta’s Rent.Grow.Own® solution has helped concrete, sawing and drilling businesses to fund the equipment they need – saws, drills, cutters, floor grinders, demolition tools, the list goes on - to stay flexible, win contracts, and keep business rolling through the doors. Now we’ve expanded that funding to include light-commercial vehicles. Whatever your business needs, we’re here to help.

So why the launch into funding for light-commercial vehicles? According to Kevin Savvas, GoGetta’s Business Leader, “It was a couple of things, really. We saw that, with the evolution of WH&S, a lot of people we were dealing with needed a vehicle that complied with site requirements. And we also saw that a lot of businesses weren’t big enough to justify getting a truck. We knew we could help them get something more appropriate to their needs, such as a commercial ute.”

“We’ve now secured partnerships with many large, new-car dealerships in Australia, plus a huge number of used car dealerships. All a business has to do is get in touch with our Business Partner, National Finance & Insurance, and we’ll do everything we can to find exactly what they want. We’re not your typical finance company, we actually care.”

GoGetta also recognises that business needs change. Flexibility is a priority. GoGetta’s Rent.Grow.Own® solution gives you the opportunity to return your vehicle or equipment at the end of 12 months, if you find you no longer need it or if you simply want to exchange it for something else.

GoGetta’s flexible 12 month rental agreement allows you to choose from a number of options:

* purchase at any time during the initial 12 months and receive a 75% net rental rebate

* after your first 12 months, switch to our rent-to-own long term funding option: go.Own.plus®

* continue to rent – and we’ll simply continue to reduce your purchase price

* return it at the end of the first year if your business needs change

* Upgrade or Downgrade, whichever suits.

Why GoGetta’s Rent.Grow.Own® makes good business sense

* low security rental bond – only four weeks!

* try before you buy – rent it and decide if it’s right for you

* you’re not locked into a long-term lease

* renting is an ‘off balance sheet’ form of funding, so it doesn’t affect your capacity to borrow for future expansion

* rental payments are 100% tax-deductible.

FUNDING FOR EQUIPMENT AND LIGHT-COMMERCIAL VEHICLES MADE EASY!

GoGetta’s approval process is easy, quick and doesn’t involve a mountain of red tape. If you’d like to know more, simply contact:

13 OUT OF THE PARK

Earlier this year, Musselman & Hall of St. Louis, a subsidiary of Musselman & Hall Contractors, Kansas City, was involved

in the Ballpark Village project in St. Louis. Ballpark Village is a recently renovated area of downtown St. Louis, next to Busch Stadium, and includes retail shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, residential spaces, office spaces and parking. Keith Ahal, Vice President of St. Louis Concrete; Arthur Purdy, St. Louis Architectural Concrete Manager; Kevin Ross, Supt. St. Louis, along with Musselman & Hall’s Kansas City owners, Mike Morris, Doug Hall, and Dexter Philips, were the team assigned to help transform two levels of regular concrete floors into beautiful, polished concrete floors for the Cardinal Nation Bar.

Purdy knew he wanted to use the Husqvarna PG 820 planetary grinder on the floors, because his team was familiar with this type of walk-behind concrete grinding equipment. Purdy also knew it would produce a nice quality of polished floor that would hold up well to traffic and would need minimum maintenance. The twist to the project was that both floors needed to be polished at a fast pace so the rest of the construction could be finished before opening day at Busch Stadium. Before they could begin, samples of polishing and coloring options for the floor needed to be submitted to the Cardinal Nation Bar’s owner to pick from. Purdy and his team, along with assistance from Husqvarna representatives, submitted samples for the polished floor that used Husqvarna’s machine and tooling.

13 WIRESAWING

After the establishment of the River Murray Commission in 1917, the various regulating structures, including weirs and locks were con-structed along the River Murray. The first weir completed was Lock and Weir No. 1 (at Blanchetown) in 1922. Other weirs were progres-sively constructed, with Yarrawonga Weir being the last on the River Murray, in 1939.

REFURBISHING AUSTRALIA'S WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM

The purpose of the weirs and locks is to:

• Store water in the weir pool for consumptive use (either via gravity or pumped diversion), and to regulate river flow downstream;

• Provide a raised river level up-stream of the weir to improve the navigability of the river;

• Allow river vessels to navigate through the weir via a lock;

The existence of the weirs, and as-sociated weir pools provides a body of water, and higher water levels than would otherwise be present. This al-lows irrigators and local water supply authorities to divert water for agricul-tural, town and industrial consump-tion. The upstream pool of water, and the existence of a lock, also enables recreational activities.

The weirs at Mildura, Torrumbarry and Yarrawonga were constructed primarily for water supply rather than for naviga-tion. There are 14 weirs along the River Murray - all except Yarrawonga Weir include a navigation Lock. The location of the weirs is shown in a

diagram of the River Murray System. These locks and weirs were in urgent need of upgrading and stabilising.

Over the last 5 years a joint venture between National Contracting Pty Ltd and Diamond Contractors Australia Pty Ltd has seen over 2500 tonnes of concrete piers and weir abutments on the Murray River system removed using Diamond Wire Sawing. With the head contractors requirements to remove these piers using "non-percussive" methods due to the fragile nature of the surrounding structure, the only safe solution turned out to be Wire Sawing.

The various contractors engaged to replace these piers, turned to the expertise of National Contracting and Diamond Contractors to help design an efficient system to remove these concrete encased steel trestles. Once the maximum crane lifting capacity was determined to be approximately 8 tonnes, a cut pattern was decided upon and the necessary cores for safe lifting and wire passage were drilled.

Wire Sawing commenced with the head contractor still being quite sceptical about us being able to achieve our claimed completion date for the first stage. The first stage came in two weeks ahead of schedule with plenty of smiles all around. Later on in the job, the longest drought in southern Australia's history finally broke, with flooding rains causing delays up to twelve months on some stages.

During the job we tested wire from various suppliers but ultimately settled on a Widecut sintered wire, supplied by Traxx Construction Products. The aggregate was abrasive granite aggregate with river sand and had tested on average to be 48mpa. All wire sawing was completed using Husqvarna CS2512 Wire Saws. The piers had a heavy box section steel trestle embedded inside it with very large hinges at the base which had to be sawn through. In total 1440 square metres of Wire Sawing was completed over fifteen stages, with some 580 metres of 75mm coring for wire access and lifting holes. Additionally a further 218 metres of 75mm and 125mm cores were drilled to a depth of up to eight metres for piezometers to be installed.

TIGER LOSES ITS TAILA small piece of Melbourne's history is disappearing as the “Tiger Tower” is demolished.

A pronounced structure viewed by hundreds of millions of travellers yet never at the forefront of

anyone's thoughts, the tower has stood the test of time since it began appearing on the horizon during 1969 as evidenced by the Melbourne Airport image below. More recently the water tower became far more recognisable, gaining a lick of paint to closely resemble a Tiger Airways aircraft livery.

According to Melbourne Airport, demolition will consist of "A series of innovative cutting and propping techniques, regarded by engineering specialists as the safest procedure for a demolition of this scale." In what will most likely resemble the demolition of the Lonsdale Street Power Station chimney some years ago, large horizontal rings will be cut with a diamond tipped wire saw and then repositioned by mobile crane to terra firma for recycling offsite.

The water tower is to make way for the new integrated ground transport hub which forms part of the larger precinct redevelopment of which Leighton Contractors is the chief builder. As seen below works have commenced well back from the terminal precinct for associated infrastructure such as elevated roadways and the like. Piling for the integrated ground transport hub and part of the terminal precinct are well advanced.

TIGER TOWER

The project consisted of five cutting sequences; the roof of the towers sphere; the side walls of the towers sphere; the underside of the sphere or (bowel); the haunch or (knuckle) and the neck or (trunk) of the tower.

The scaffolding consisted of an inner and outer scaffold the inner was designed to support the towers load and movement throughout the demolition

process, with the outer acting as loading docks and access for workers. The design, erection and approval of these two scaffolds took approximately 3 months, frustrating sub-contractors Delta Demolitions Pty Ltd and Advanced Sawing Pty Ltd due to the very tight schedule that Leighton’s Contractors Pty Ltd had set out for the completion of works.

Weather conditions throughout the project were not always favourable, waste blocks once cutting had commenced were under no circumstances allowed to be left, the cutting sequence had to be finished and the waste block lifted to the ground. This left Advanced Sawing Pty Ltd and Sergi’s Crane Crew exposed to at times, gale force winds of up to 40 knots and torrential rains at 50 meters in the air, the wind chill factor at times feeling like below zero and works occasionally running late into the night to meet the required time table laid out by the head contractor.

continued on the next page

Page 20: Diamond magazine issue 11

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The roof section was core drilled for lifting points and cut into cake like pieces with the outer scaffold acting as fall protection around the perimeter. Each section weighing approximately 8 to 10 tonnes and cutting was achieved using a diesel Road Saw.

The side walls of the sphere created a few concerns for the head contractor Leighton and the Engineers of Delta Demolitions, the tower was built in the sixties and the sub-standard drawings that they had to reference from were of little help. Their concern was that the side walls of the sphere, had reo bars around the perimeter that may have been under tension to help support the load weight of the sphere and that if a section of the outer wall were cut releasing that tension, the sphere may peel or fracture apart (like a flower opening up) due to a lack of structural steel reinforcement within the haunch or knuckle at the base of the bowl.

Works were halted temporarily while load ratings of the inner scaffold were double checked and extra scaffold bracing and supports were put in place under the bowl of the sphere to alleviate the concerns. It was determined that to ensure safety and prevent any unnecessary fracturing of the structure that each section, that was to be cut and removed must come out in a certain sequence. Rather than just working our way around the circumference of the sphere. The side walls were cut using two wire saws, core holes were drilled for lifting points and the bottom cut was achieved with the use of a wall saw. Each section weighing approximately 20 tonnes. When the first section was taken out a check was done to see if the tower had moved, sure enough it had, a total of 25mm to one side. This was of huge concern to the head contractor Leighton, halting works again for one day. After consultation with Delta Demolitions and Advanced Sawing, both explaining what they considered to be quite obvious, works were able to recommence. (In short once you take 20 tonnes from the side of a structure with an overhang, the load will in almost all cases move, however once 20 tonnes is taken from the other side the structures load will shift again and settle).

COVERPROJECT 20

The underside of the sphere or bowl, once again had to be cut in a certain sequence, and working within the bowl was no easy task as the floor was on a 45 degrees angle making it extremely slippery. A tiered scaffold was constructed inside the bowl for access and cutting was achieved using a wall saw for the side cuts and the last bottom cut was achieved using a ring saw and wall saw as we became closer to the base of the sphere were the knuckle or haunch thickened up. Holes were drilled for lifting points and each peace weighed approximately 18 – 22 tonnes.

The haunch or knuckle, holes were drilled for lifting points and two wire saws were used for the vertical cuts. The separation cut was achieved by using a Dragon Saw and cutting to a depth of 400mm, each peace weighing approximately 20-24 tonnes. Whilst cutting these sections Advanced Sawing’s operators encountered large rectangular steel strip plates and high tensile stressing strands, making cutting a little more difficult than usual.

The Neck or Trunk, this section of cutting was a consistent process from the top, right down to the base of the tower, four holes were drilled in each section for lifting purposes and the perimeter of the trunk was cut using a Dragon saw cutting to a depth of 400mm, each section when lifted to the ground weighing approximately 22-24 tonnes.

WHY TRAINING MATTERSWhy bother with training? – you might well ask yourself,

especially in the harsh economic times.

Training is often the first victim of cutbacks in a business when in fact it should be the last. A well trained team will improve productivity for your business. A well trained team will understand how to do their job correctly and safely.

Training is not just about meeting your legal requirement.

Training will help to:

• Prevent Injury to the person

• Prevent Damage to equipment and property

• Increase Efficiency

Correct Training also helps by:

• Increasing job knowledge

• Increasing skills ability

• Increasing competency and confidence

• Decreasing risks.

Who Needs Training? EVERYONE.

The Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association of Australia believe a training course on its own does not work, it is the participants that put their learning to work when they are back in their own environment – that’s when training works.

Developing a culture of training and understanding the benefits that it can bring will deliver increased profits to any organisation time and time again.

The CSDAA has developed a unique training qualification specific to the sawing and drilling industry. Choosing this accredited training for your organisation is an important step and should be seen as an investment rather than an additional expense. We can then agree that a training programme serves the interests of every member within your company. The training will be delivered under contract by a registered RTO with the facility and resources to deliver RPL assessment nationally. The important thing is that there is now an accredited course that delivers this specialised industry training.

Dear Jason

Support for national accreditation of Course in Concrete Sawing and Drilling

I write to support the accreditation of the Course in Concrete Sawing and Drilling, which has recently been developed by the Concrete Drilling and Sawing Association of Australia

This course, I envisage after reading the content will provide the Concrete Sawing and Drilling industry a standardised competency level for all employees. The course should deliver a greater level of comfort when employees that have been in the industry or who wish to enter the industry a competency base to undertake that work safely and with a more consistent level of knowledge and skills in operating items of plant.

Your Association are to be congratulated in their endeavours to provide standardised development and learning opportunities for Construction workers throughout Australia.

We wish you every success with the accreditation process and with the future of this important program.

TAKE THE COMPLEXITIES OUT OF YOUR INSURANCES

Supported by the CSDAA and its members, National Finance & Insurance and Strathearn Insurance Brokers have spent the last 12 months understanding the insurance needs of Concrete Cutters and have developed a tailored and competitive insurance solution dedicated to concrete cutting, drilling, grinding and breaking companies, backed by Lloyd's of London.

Based on the experiences shared by CSDAA members, we outline some of the lessons learned and hardships endured that could have been risk managed by an effective insurance programme.

I assumed my business was protected.

Having the time to be across your business insurances is one thing, but having the ability to comprehend what appears to be an endless list of policy exclusions is an equally difficult challenge.

After meeting with many CSDAA members Australia wide, we were shocked at how frequent insurance claims were being declined based either on policy exclusions, or on a misunderstanding of what business owners thought was to be covered. The three areas we saw a prevalence of losses being incurred without insurance was:

1. Damage caused by a member to a third parties’ property;

2. A member’s plant & equipment being stolen;

3. A member’s plant & equipment being damaged at a job site.

Look out for these common exclusions within your public liability policy wording.

Of the 20 members that were visited, all but six had purchased liability insurance from well known Australian insurance companies. From reviewing each members Liability policy wording, the three exclusions that appeared in all and were being incorrectly applied to claim occurrences were:

“..excludes faulty workmanship being the cost of performing, completing, correcting or improving any work previously undertaken by you”

“…excludes liability arising out of, or in connection with the, vibration, removal or weakening of supports conducted by you”

“…excludes all liability coverage, for activities engaged in the demolition of any buildings or structures exceeding 10 m in height by you “

It is these exclusions that formed the basis for third party property damage claims being declined.

My equipment is my business, what insurance options do I have?

The resounding feedback from CSDAA members was that they were not aware of the insurance options that they can choose from to cover their gear. Generally, there are three options to choose from, or a combination:

1. Business Package Insurance: Whilst at the specified factory or business location only, cover is provided to a set sum insured limit for Fire, Theft and Accidental Damage.

2. Transit Insurance: Whilst the gear is being conveyed, cover is provided to a set sum insured limit for accidental damage and theft from a securely locked vehicle Cover can also be extended to cover theft whilst outside the business location or employee homes.

3. Mobile Plant & Equipment Insurance: This is the closest policy to provide 24/7 cover for the gear in the event of fire, damage or theft. The loss can occur at the factory, in transit or on job sites.

Those present at the CSDAA Convention on the Gold Coast in March this year would have seen familiar industry products and faces exhibiting under a banner 'not so' familiar to our industry. Synonymous with water management and drainage solutions for over a decade, Hydro Construction Products has launched its expansion into the concrete cutting sector under owner and former Bianco and NexGen executive Ian Turner.

Formed in 2003, Hydro was acquired by Turner in full in 2013 and has grown to become one of Australia’s and New Zealand’s pre-eminent supplier of water management solutions.

“It made sense for us to bring our diamond tools business under our rebranded company Hydro Construction Products enabling us to operate in two distinct but linked markets and in doing so building our brand awareness,” said Turner.

Hydro Construction Products is now the supplier of leading brands such as Arix, Pentruder, Stihl, ICS, Promac, Lavina, Kerrick, Darda and the exclusive supplier of LISSMAC which has become an international market leader in the area of stone cutting and masonry technology.

“This combination of suppliers enables Hydro to provide choice to our customers whether it be for blades, core bits, drilling equipment, floor preparation, bench saws, hand saws, road Saws, hydraulic equipment, generators, compaction equipment, vacuum cleaners or wall & wire saws,” said Turner.

Hydro has offices and warehouses in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne with key staff and a network of distributers across Australia and New Zealand. For further information please refer to the ad on page ‘X’ of this issue of Diamonds or call 1300 GO HYDRO or visit their website www.hydrocp.com.au.

Did you Know that Your Choice in Diamond Blades Could Kill You?

CSDAA.COM.AU

Now that we have your attention, I felt it timely, given many recent, deadly accidents, to make you aware of the hazards involved in your choice of diamond blades. We all work in a hazardous and high risk industry, where not only training, but information sharing, is essential to minimise that risk.

A construction site is not unlike a warzone. Everywhere lay traps ready to maim or kill the unsuspecting worker. Some are obvious, but the most deadly are not easily seen nor identified. Falling from heights, nail guns, and heavy machinery are all given a wide berth on these sites. Their ability to seriously injure or kill are well-known, and safety education for proper operation is almost always a requirement to step foot on a jobsite, or should be.

Unfortunately, the tool that injures the most people every year goes largely unnoticed by the majority of workers using them. This instrument of destruction is the hand held saw or angle grinder. It has a wide assortment of uses, and is utilized in one method or another by a large percentage of people on construction sites.

If the jobsite is a warzone, then hand saws are the grenades soldiers carry around with them. The open blade setup, combined with shockingly dangerous abrasive and diamond blades, makes for a ticking time bomb when operated by someone unaware of its potentially lethal possibility.I am sure most have their own stories relating to accidents involving diamond blades, where extreme kickback occurs when using hand held saws, or where blades simply disinte-

grate into pieces, causing serious damage and injury. In most cases, these incidents can be traced back to poor quality diamond tools.

With most hand held 2 stroke powered saws, the blade is spinning at 100m/sec unloaded or 80m/sec when under load. This equates to more than 320KPH. At this speed, the saw blank is subjected to amazing stresses. It, the steel blank (or core) MUST be made perfectly, to withstand such stresses. And, of course, higher quality steel cores cost much more than poor quality.

I often field remarks that “well, it is just a hunk of steel”. Well it may look like that, but the subject must be taken much more seriously. Those that have been subjected to a blade coming apart at 320KPH will know well what I am talking about, if you survived.

The choice of “steel” for a high speed diamond blade, in par-ticular, is critical. It has to survive nearly 3 times the stresses of a normal flat saw blade that is spinning at “just” 40-50m/second. “Steel” comes in many grades, from plain old mild steel, to highly tuned alloy steels. Steel for hand held sawing operations needs to be of specific hardness (HRB), and toler-ances and in particular, TENSIONED correctly.

If the blade has incorrect tolerances, “hammering” can occur

continued from the next page

Page 32: Diamond magazine issue 11

31 SPECIALFEATURE

that can destroy a blade in minutes. If the incorrect tension is not applied to the blade, then extreme wobbling can occur that will also destroy the blade. Incorrect tensioning is often responsible for jamming of blades in the cut, and severe kick back that causes most injuries and deaths. The tool steel must also be of a quality that retains the correct tension in blades for the life of the product. Such tension problems can also impact greatly on the speed of cut and life of the tool.

A great deal of what an owner or operator does, can also impact the life of a saw blade. Storing the blade saw in the back of a “hot” utility (nothing to do with looks or engine capacity), insufficient water and incorrect matching of blade bond to material can cause major damage.

So, CAN YOUR CHOICE OF DIAMOND BLADES SERIOUSLY INJUR YOU OR EVEN KILL YOU, OR YOUR STAFF?

Yes, it most certainly can.

Over the last 5 years, the price of diamond tools has plum-meted, meaning that “manufacturers” take shortcuts with YOUR wellbeing. I personally have been designing and mak-ing diamond tools for 35+ years and never before have I seen such a plethora of JUNK diamond blades on the market.Every day, professional suppliers who do not take risks, hear the comments that they lost a sale solely based on price, or that the customer “imports” his own tools.

WOULD YOU IMPORT YOUR OWN TYRES FOR YOUR CAR AND THEN SPEED OFF AT 320KM AN HOUR DOWN THE ROAD, WITH THE FAMILY ON BOARD??

Not likely.

And, may I suggest, that you try to sue the “supplier” of the “imported product”, when the inevitable happens? No chance, as something like 99% of the Online diamond tool suppliers are simply brokers for mostly non reputable manufacturers. Statistics show that some 60% of diamond tool sellers in Aus-tralia do not even have Product or Public indemnity insurance. If an accident occurs as a result of a product bought from such a supplier, then if you are the importer then you can be deemed as the manufacturer!!

Too dramatic?

(OSHA) Occupational Safety and Hazards Administration quote “diamond-blades can lose a section causing injury as well and the results are extremely deadly. Sixty percent of the time a section of diamond-blade broke off and struck an operator, death ensued. The remaining 40% caused serious injuries requiring hospitalization”. Occupational Safety and Hazards Administration (OSHA) statistics show a 20% fatality rate for injuries resulting from hand saw or grinder kickbacks. The other 80% of injuries were serious enough to require hospitalization.

One of the main causes of injuries from kick back is opera-tor fatigue. When the operator becomes tired, they generally stand closer to the blade, trying to use their body weight for stability. Another reason is an incorrect blade for the task. The cut begins to take too long, heating up the blade, and a tired operator starts leaning closer. When the overheated blade begins to wobble it will kick back, and the proximity of the operator means a higher risk of injury.

OSHA also quotes “In 2008, nearly 25,000 people were injured nationwide (USA) while using angle grinders and hand held saws (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission).

Quality and Safety Costs.

So next time you are asked to buy that “cheap” product, think about what you may be doing to your family or the families of your workers.

PS. And if still not convinced, we suggest you take it up with a specialist law firm like the one shown above!!!!!!

This article was written for Diamonds Magazine by Lloyd Wil-liams who has been designing and manufacturing diamond tools throughout the world, for more than 35 years. Opinions in this article are not necessarily those of the CSDAA. Some comments via OSHA.

HOW GREAT LEADERS CREATE HIGHLY INNOVATIVE CULTURESBY MATT TENNEY

Leaders in most organizations know that the ability to continuously innovate is one of the few competitive advantages that remain

in this new economy. The concrete cutting, polishing and imaging industry is no exception. Perhaps this is why the word “innovative” appears so often in marketing materials and industry literature. While there is certainly consensus among most leaders that innovation is essential, there seems to be a lot of confusion around what exactly innovation is and how to create a highly innovative culture. Interest-ingly, by getting clear on what innovation actually is, approaches for creating a more innovative culture also become clear.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CREATIVITYAND INNOVATION

For many, the words creativity and innovation are synonymous. However, they are actually quite different. Although creativity can assist in innovating, it is certainly not necessary. In fact, there is research showing that people who are “too creative” are actually very unlikely to innovate. This is because innovation has a lot more to do with execution than it does with creativity. Someone who has too many creative ideas often never sticks with one of the ideas long enough to create the disruption in the field, marketplace, etc., that we refer to as an innovation. The most important element of being innovative is the ability to stay with an idea long enough, even in the face of significant opposition, to actually make the idea a reality and have it adopted by at least a small group of people. A perfect real-world example of this is Bill Gates, one of the most innovative people of our time. Gates did not create DOS, which was the foun-dation on which Microsoft was built. He bought DOS from people who were likely much more creative than him. But those people weren’t innovators. They didn’t have the vision and the courage to stick with their idea for years, despite having no real market for it, until the market emerged around their idea. But Bill Gates did. He is an innovator.

As you might guess, people like Bill Gates who are naturally very innovative are quite rare. The vast majority of people are not natural-lyinclined to innovate. This is because most people have a moderate to strong cognitive bias, called the status quo bias.

The status quo bias results in a strong, subconscious preference for maintaining things the way they have been. It is based on our need to fit in. The need for belonging is one of the most pow-erful human needs, and doing things that buck the status quo can certainly be associated with taking the risk of not being accepted by others. Unfortunately, the stronger the status quo bias is in a person, the less likely he or she is to create innovative solutions to problems that add value for his or her organization or for customers.

CREATING A HIGHLY INNOVATIVE CULTURE

With this understanding, a general approach becomes clear for creating a culture that is more conducive to innovation. We need to create a culture where people feel safe to take the risk of suggesting and acting on ideas that don’t conform to the status quo, and that aren’t met with broad acceptance when first introduced. In general terms, we accomplish this by working to serve the people on our team and consistently demonstrating that we truly care about them.

One reason serving and caring for team members helps to build and sustain an innovative culture, is that leaders who effectively care for team members are much better at modeling and teaching empathy. Being able to empathize with others is essential for determining what they might need and how we can solve their problems. People with high levels of empathy are much more likely to identify customer needs and can thereby add value for those customers by meet-ing their needs. This could simply be a matter of better customer service or offering an entirely new product or service.

Empathy is also extremely helpful when we are in the process of advancing a new idea. As we discussed above, the most important element of innovation is the ability to execute on an idea. Unless we are in a one-person company, this means that we often need the support of others to be able to move our idea forward. We need to be able to understand the point of view of others and discern their motivations. According to a study published in the Harvard Business Review, this ability to understand the motivations of others and craft a message that addresses their needs is the most essential skill for people trying to innovate within an organization.1

Another reason serving and caring for team members is so impor-tant is that with consistent care, people trust us more, and they know that we will not fire them for taking appropriaterisks and failing. The more secure people feel, the more likely they are to suggest and act on innovative ideas. We are essentially removing the status quo bias by removing the status quo.

Two companies that have been demonstrating for years just how powerful this can be are Google and the software giant,SAS, which are among the most innovative companies in the world. Every year, these two companies are also both highly ranked among the best companies to work for. On the 2013list of the Fortune Magazine Best Companies to Work For, they were listed as number one and two, respectively.

The examples of how Google works to care for employees are almost legendary. They include free, on-site haircuts; gyms; pools; break rooms with video games, ping pong, billiards and foosball; on-site medical staff for easy doctor appointments and the option to bring one’s dog in to work.

But Google didn’t invent this type of incredible workplace culture. They actually emulated the culture at SAS, a company that has produced absolutely phenomenal business outcomes. SAS has posted record earnings for 37 consecutive years, including $2.8 bil-lion in 2012. CEO Jim Goodnight often says that the secret to their success is taking care of employees.

34 THE BUSINESS OF BUSINESS

CSDAA.COM.AU

continued on the next page

Page 37: Diamond magazine issue 11

Although perks like the ones offered at Google and SAS are nice, what’s more important is that we do the little things every day to show the people on our team that we truly care about them. When we consistently do the little things to serve and care for team mem-bers—like listening well, empowering people, forgiving mistakes, giving credit where it’s due and offering sincere appreciation—we create a culture that is highly conducive to innovation. Also, by mak-ing a habit of doing the little things every day, and valuing relation-ships above short-term goals and numbers, we are more likely to put relationships first when it is very challenging to do so.

In the fall of 2008, when the Great Recession was imminent, Jim Goodnight offered an incredible example of his commitment to put-ting people first. SAS faced the same issues that every other com-pany in the industry faced. Sales plunged and almost every busi-ness was making budget cuts in preparation for what seemed like a long downturn. Many companies in almost every industry started laying off large numbers of employees to make their numbers work so SAS employees began to fear that the same thing would happen at their company.

But Goodnight’s response to the recession was dramatically differ-ent, as Mark C. Crowley, author of Lead From the Heart: Transfor-mational Leadership for the 21st Century, describes in an article he wrote for Fast Company: “In early January 2009, Goodnight held a global webcast and announced that none of its 13,000 worldwide

employees would lose their job. He simply asked them all to be vigilant with spending and to help the firm endure the storm.

‘By making it very clear that no one was going to be laid off,’ Goodnight told me, ‘suddenly we cut out huge amounts of chatter, concern and worry—and people got back to work.’” At the time, SAS had a 33-year streak of record revenues. Jim Goodnight was perfectly willing to let that record go to make sure that people felt safe. He knew that by caring for team members and ensuring that they felt safe, he would be creating the space for continued innovation. As a result of his care, employees at SAS did continue to disrupt the market with innovations and the company had another record year while everyone else struggled just to stay alive.

37 INDUSTRYBITS

Two thousand and fourteen is drawing to an end, as we look forward to the Christmas break and some time off to share with family and friends. I make special mention of this because of the recent tragedy in Queensland with the sudden passing of Jarred Clayton. There are very few words that can ad-equately account for the loss and suffering Jarred’s parents, Graham and Leanne, sister Bree along with loving wife Leigh are feeling at this time.

Jarred was a respected and valued member of Condrill Services in Queensland, and will be sorely missed by those that grew up and worked with him. In support of Leigh who is expecting their first child in the coming months, I ask that we all provide support to ease some of their burden caused by his loss.

I would ask all employers to share this tragic event with their staff and join with us as a col-lective group to show support and help all those who knew Jarred get through this difficult time.

Unbeatable performanceNobody beats Brokk when it comes to demolition at reconstructions or renovations of residential, commercial or industrial facilities. This remote-controlled, electric powerhouse combines impressive hitting power with an outstanding reach, while the operator works at a safe distance from vibrations and falling debris.

Brokk is so light that it can work even on weak floors. So clever that it can take the stairs (or the elevator) between floors. So effective that you see the difference on the bottom line. In each project.

Traxx Construction Products MD, Lloyd Williams has advised Diamonds Magazine, that his company will this month release the new DEMCO SPIDER Hi Cycle sawing and drilling equipment.

“SPIDER has been in development for more than 3 years, at the High Tech Demco factory, a short distance from Zurich Switzerland”, says Williams.

“Demco were the pioneers of Hi Cycle wallsaws and wire saws, many years ago and SPIDER is simply an extension of that range”

Spider includes an 11kw water cooled inverter power pack, a 16" or 18” flushcut hand held saw, a 16” Ringsaw and a flushcut chainsaw with 14” or 18” bar. All tools will be capable of operating on single phase or 3 phase electric supply and are clearly the most powerful units on the market today.
