fter a busy year of recruiting, the Hawks are proud to announce the addition of 16 new players to the roster. The list includes a num- ber of new pitchers and a talented group of position players. This years pitching staff will see many excit- ing additions as the Hawks look to make a run at the SUNYAC crown. Joining the Hawks are a pair of hard throwing right handed pitchers in John Schmidt and Ray Courtney. Both hurlers transferred to New Paltz af- ter playing for two seasons at Division 1 Farleigh Dick- inson University. Schmidt will be a huge asset as he looks to be in the starting rotation. Courtney is equally exciting and features a fastball in the low 90’s. Another Division 1 transfer, Chris Connolly, will also join the staff this year from St. Peters College. Connolly is a gradu- ate of Saugerties High School who will contend to earn a spot in the Hawks rotation. Also coming to New Paltz this year after transferring from C.W Post is Jordan Epstein. Epstein, who was undefeated his senior season in high school, is a proven winner. All four players are major additions to the pitching staff. Joining them on the mound are incoming freshmen James McKenna (Connetquot), Chris Pyz (Kings Park), Dylan Babcock (Cornwall), and Mike Pastorino (John Jay). “Our fresh- men pitchers are some of the best high school talent in the state, they ensure bright future for the program.” - Coach Tom McTamaney. The new talent will join key pitchers from last years staff including Mike Pinnola (So), Tim Chelius(Jr), Brett Harrison (Sr), and Tom Pinnola (So). Nick Monaco (Jr) is fully recovered from arm surgery and is expected to serve as a valuable option. Chris Chismar (So) will an- chor the staff. Chismar’s rookie campaign in 2010 was highlighted by a record setting game when he struck out 20 Oswego batters in a complete game 9 inning performance. Harrison and Chelius are the most ex- perienced duo on the staff and will both continue to serve as major roles in 2011. Harrison’s knuckle drop is one of the best in the league and Chelius has impec- cable control. Mike Pinnola is expected to be in the starting rotation and should emerge as one of the best pitchers in the league. Tom Pinnola will look to up the ante after a breakout freshmen year that saw him win the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. Tom will continue to dazzle on the mound and will be featured daily in the Hawks lineup. The Hawks will also add new position players for the 2011 season. Transfer Pat Herrington will assume catch- ing duties for the Hawks after a stellar two year junior college career at Schenectady Community College where he batting an astounding .370. Dave Lostaglio from Marlboro High School will join him behind the dish. fall season preview: hawks welcome newcomers A 2010 New Paltz Fall Baseball Sat September 18th “Atlanta Braves Scout Day” 10Am Sat September 25 @ Vassar College (2) 11Am Sat October 16th Alumni Game 10Am Diamond Notes The Ofcial Newsletter of New Paltz Baseball Newsletter.indd 1 Newsletter.indd 1 9/2/10 3:05 PM 9/2/10 3:05 PM

Last year the lefty slugger led his team to a section championship and had close to a .500 batting aver-age. For his efforts, Dave was named to the New York All State Team. Sophomore Jimmy Flynn returns after a solid freshmen year. Power hitting transfer Jake Cam-eron (So) from Virginia Wesleyan could also see time behind the plate. After slugging 5 homeruns in just 43 at bats for Virginia Wesleyan, Cameron will be a huge addition to the Hawks lineup and should be among the top offensive players in the SUNYAC.

The Hawks infi eld this year will not be light on experi-ence or depth. After an Injury sidelined him after a hot start, Mike Marash (Jr) returns for his third season at New Paltz. Marash will look to resume his duties at third base along with newcomer Jake Cameron and transfer Matt Prescia (Mt Saint Mary’s). Up the middle are returnees Paul Merola (Jr), 2010 1st team ALL SUNYAC, Dylan Franco (Sr), Chris Paulicelli (Jr), and newcomer Kenny Gentile (Fr) from Lindenhurst High School. Merola, Franco, and Paulicelli have all been major contributors over the past couple seasons and will look to lead the defense to a SUNYAC Champion-ship in 2011. Gentile will add depth to the middle as is one of two new recruits from the state championship Lindenhurst squad. Andrew Grann (Fr) after succumb-ing to arm surgery last season is expected to be back and healthy adding another option at short. At fi rst base, last years starter, Steve Pinckney (So) is joined by freshmen Doug Marshall from Mepham., and transfer William Ruggiero (Jr) from Stonehill College. Both Pinck-ney and Marshall have solid bats and are very solid defensively. Ruggiero, after playing football for two seasons at Stonehill will be an intriguing option and can also play the outfi eld.

The Outfi eld will see two fresh faces in Sean Wachtel (Fr) and Jimmy Briggs (Fr). Wachtel comes to New Paltz from Saugerties High School where he was the start-ing center fi elder. Briggs was the 2009 silver slugger award winner when he led the state with 14 homers for

Lindenhurst. His senior season was highlighted by being named the Newsday “Player of the Year” after lead-ing the state champion Lindenhurst Bulldogs in every major offensive category. His Lindenhurst team had a spectacular run winning Lindenhurst its fi rst ever New York State Championship. Joining them in the outfi eld are veterans Nick Monaco (Jr), Phil Parker (Jr), Phil Ric-cio (So), and Mike Sherlock (Jr). Parker and Sherlock have been familiar faces in the Hawks outfi eld over the past two seasons and Phil Riccio is expected to compete for a full time role after an impressive fresh-men campaign. Monaco will see time in the outfi eld as well as on the mound for the Hawks this season.

This years Alumni game is set for October 16th. The Hawks welcome all former players to attend and join for a day of fun under the sun. The day will start with the infamous home run derby followed by a game against the current New Paltz team. We look forward to another huge turnout this year and an always competitive game.

New Paltz Baseball Alumni: Where are they now?

Former Hawk standout and fan favorite Doug Chaputian has landed a position with the MLB Network! Chaputian played for the Hawks from 2005-2008. Doug played short stop and in the outfi eld during his tenure at New Paltz and was part of the 2006 squad that won 20 games. Doug is now an account manager for MLB Network.

“New Paltz is a great place that I have many fond memories. I can’t wait to come back for the 2010 Alumni game this Fall, GO HAWKS!!.” -Doug
