Cut out and replacement was not an option, as customers in the province required the refined products that were flowing through the pipeline. Lamination was found in close proximity to a nearby girth weld, limiting the potential use of other traditional repair methods such as a welded sleeve or a rigid composite repair. Shutdown would have cost the company thousands of dollars. Following are pictures of the damaged pipe. Design: Citadel Technologies’ team of project engineers designed a repair for the laminar defect according to ASME PCC-2 Article 4.1, and recommended a DiamondWrap® HP TM repair solution. 6 layers of DiamondWrap® HP TM were required to repair the defect, even with the high design pressure.

Installation: Citadel teamed with an experienced group of trained installers that worked for the company performing the digs. The pipeline operator saved considerable amounts of money because the digging company was able to employ non-welding labor to complete the install. Additionally, the pipeline operator did not have to call out two separate companies to complete the digging and the installation, as the contractor was able to safely complete both operations. The high compressive modulus filler putty was installed in the defect areas and around the welds to transfer the load to the carbon fiber repair system. The primer was installed next to increase the bond between the repair and the pipe. 6 layers of carbon fiber were installed over a 1.5 meter repair length to repair the lamination defect. The actual installation time was approximately 1.5 hours, with just two trained technicians. No heavy equipment or hot work was required for the installation, and the line remained in operation with no disruption to production. The repair was installed and cured in the same day, allowing the inspector and digging crew to move on to the next anomaly. Below are photos of the completed repair.

Conclusion: This pipeline was able to maintain full operation throughout the installation of the repair with no need to shut down or reduce capacity. The pipeline operator was able to save time and money by choosing to use DiamondWrap® HPTM to repair this pipeline defect. Citadel Technologies successfully partnered with its Canadian partner to successfully design, install, and cure this engineered repair.
