T he smooth, translucent appearance of alabaster

bear a resemblance to very polished onyx or

marble. The diversity of color and veining seen

in this material is also reminiscent of ancient white or

colored marble.

Alabaster is a metamorphic rock, formed geologically

under high pressure and temperature. A wide range of

alabaster artifacts can be found in many historic

collections and museums.

Reviving an ancient stonework, Diana Fernandez

recuperates fine alabaster sculptural work and turns it

into abstraction, manufacturing stunning contemporary

sculptures, becoming one of the most inspirational

Contemporary Stone Sculptors in Guatemala.

Fernández is a sculptor of exceptional talent, who will

definitely be at the pole position of collected Central

American sculptors of the future. Her stone pieces have a

presence that cannot be ignored.

She is a highly accomplished sculptor and has spent

many years pursuing her own personal apprenticeship,

preparing her with a deep appreciation and affinity with

the stone she carves and a profound respect for the

heritage of her profession.

Her alabaster sculpture has the power to transcend all

other sculptural materials, to connect raw emotions to the

object before us, revealed and exposed from a mysterious

world, mutilated by the vehemence of its making, a self-

sacrificing stone, evidence of the unyielding power of

nature and the mark she has left upon her surface in order

to give birth to a new proposal, like the capturing of a

crystalline burst of light into a wave in the ocean that

awakens a memory of unadulterated emotion.

It is for the artist to recognize what can be unearthed: to

reveal what magnificence of light and colors of form

discover the sensuality that lies within. With a courage

gained through experience, Fernández can break into

these stones, revealing their secrets subdued, cloaked in

the dusts of the evolution of the Planet.

Early in the morning, she starts, with a touch of the hand,

ready to encounter the stone, to hewn and carve it in

order to make her rise lyrically, to reveal her sensitivity,

the beauty that lives in the artist’s unconscious that the

stone greets over her rough skin. In the creation of a

piece of work, she has to make use of her knowledge and

intuition and thus armed bring forth a form that can

express a multitude of emotions.

So it is through the unconscious that the sculptor is fused

with alabaster, reaching for perfect symbiosis.

Diana Fernández exhibits her sculptures “Vital Similes”,

during the month of March 2016, in El Túnel, a

Guatemalan Art Gallery, offering us a dip in the

dynamics of alabaster, the incredible balance of her

bronze figures and her introduction to new techniques

with fiberglass and resin.
