Sew Fundamental is a series of “Learn to Sew” clas-ses for novice sewers or “it’s been a long time” sewers. The first lesson is essential to your sewing success and includes an introduction to sewing terms, tools and techniques. You’ll get comfortable with threading your machine, make the Camelback Carryall Bag and be ready to take any of BC’s beginning level classes.
Each week thereafter, you’ll make a project from the book, S.E.W.: Sew Everything Workshop by Diana Rupp. Cecile Babich-Morrow and Mary Furniss have planned six sessions for you that will include a pillow, apron, yoga pants or boxer shorts, flouncy tank top or Tokyo tie bag and naughty secretary skirt. Complete these classes and you will be ready to take another creative class or work in the Sewing Lab.
You can rent a machine or you may purchase one starting at $249.

THE STORY OF A TEST SWATCH
You love to sew. And therefore, you have brought your special friend – your sewing machine – to the Bernina Connection for annual service. Several days have passed, and now you have returned to pick it up. Underneath the presser foot is a swatch of fabric. What is that? Why is it there?
The test swatch tells a story about how your machine was performing when it left our service department. This story began the last time you sewed. You may have experienced a problem such as loose tensions, looping, jamming or squeaking. Now that you have it back, how do you know that those issues have been resolved? The answer lies in that swatch of fabric under your presser foot. Take the time to examine it carefully – it will tell everything you need to know about how your machine is sewing.
You will see a variety of stitches on your test swatch – usually zigzag, honeycomb, hearts, flowers, straight stitch and buttonholes. Our use of these stitches is intentional, as each tells a unique story about tensions and feed balance. Some stitches tend to pull the bottom thread toward the top. Others tend to pull the top thread to the bottom. When the tensions are adjusted so that all of these stitches look beautiful, with no bottom thread showing on the top, we know that we have succeeded.
The fabric and thickness of the fabric we use to test sew is by design. It needs to be thick enough to sew full width patterns and be able to supply a foundation for the stitch. But it needs to be thin enough to reveal if excessive puckering is occurring. The fabric we choose helps reveal if your machine is not sewing excellently.
If you brought an embroidery module in with your machine, you will see a swatch with an embroidery test design. This design was created by Bernina to exercise every aspect of embroidery and reveal if any parts of any design are not producing exceptional results.
Would you like your stitches to look as beautiful as those on your test swatch? The key is thread: We use Aurifil 50/2 on your test swatch. If your tensions do not look identical to your test swatch, the brand, type or weight of the top and bobbin threads are most likely mismatched.
The story told by your test swatch is worth reading. When you pick up your machine and examine your test swatch, you will know exactly how your machine is sewing when it left our shop. This story gives you confidence to know that if you use similar thread and an 80/12 needle, you will have identical results. Note from the editor: We carry many other threads and other sizes of needles here at BC. If you have questions about threads and needles, please ask for help!!

Days for Girls
We are so blessed to be living here in the United States
where many of the problems that girls and women face in the developing world are just not an issue. In over
59 countries girls miss up to two months of school a
year because they don't have proper sanitary supplies to use during their monthly periods. Women in the
work force face the same issues. Go to www.daysforgirls.org to read about the difference this
organization has made in these counties.
The girl scouts of Troop 1226 have been making the shields and liners for the girls at Our Lady of Perpetual
Help orphanage in Haiti. We want to get involved in
this effort. We'll have jobs for any level of sewing skill. Drawstring bags hold the washable pads along
with small bars of soap. For many girls these are the prettiest things they have ever owned.
If this touches your heart as it has ours, please join us
Sunday, October 20th at 1-5
We will have samples at our REG party, Sat Sept 21 from

Quilters Jackpot Sat 9 - 10
Oct 5, Nov 2, Dec 7, Jan 4 with Gail Shannon
Every month, Gail picks a group of stunning fabrics. Using these fabrics, you create a 12” finished size block - any pattern you
like - as many as you want! Bring your blocks in, with your name on them, of course, and at next session we draw names for the winner of the jackpot! Every 12 blocks turned in - we have one
winner! With 3 - 6 winners a month, it won’t be long before you have ready-made blocks for a
quilt top! Once everyone has won - we start a new round. You can join in anytime. This
group has been one of our most fun “classes” ever. Congratulations to all the
winners! New participants are welcome! Ask for the Rules! You could be a winner too!
