Helping find friends

Schools are busy places, with lots of friendly faces and friendly people.

Our school is filled with polite people that say hello and ask how you

are. But every now and then, even in a school as friendly as ours you

notice the face of someone that needs a friend.

The thing about finding friends is that sometimes the harder you try to

find one, the harder they are to find. You would think in a place where

there are hundreds of other kids, that you could find one or two that

you enjoy spending time with and who in turn enjoy spending time with

you. Loneliness is a strange thing though, people notice it but they are

not always sure how to deal with it. Some people; adults and children,

avoid the emotion of loneliness, or deny it. Some hide behind it,

wearing it like a mask or using it as a shield. Some people try to replace

the emotion of loneliness with anger or frustration because anger is

easily expressed and it is acknowledged by others.

We assume that children know how to make friends, but for a lot of

children it is not an easy task. It becomes increasingly difficult if they

are worried or anxious, or they have had negative experiences. Today I

told a student to ‘fake it’ for a little while. To smile and engage in

conversations with other students and to hold her head tall and proud.

People enjoy being around positive people.

I also advised her not to ask permission or wait to be invited to play.

The ‘asking’ creates a power imbalance and children are still learning to

show fairness in relationships, balancing power can be tricky. Waiting to

be asked to join game does not really work, kids cannot always read

emotion well. Sometimes they think people that look sad need time by

themselves.

If your child is having difficulty finding friends, help them to discover

their greatest attributes. List the qualities they have that makes them a

great friend. A great way to gain friends is to be a great friend to

yourself.

Stage 2 Poetry Slam

Stage 2 have been busy enhancing their poetic skills. As part of

their learning sequence they are hosting a poetry slam.

What is a poetry slam?

A Poetry Slam is a type of competition where people recite po-ems without props, costumes, or music. It puts a dual emphasis on the written word and performance, encouraging poets and performers to focus on what they are saying and how they are saying it.

Parents are invited to join Stage 2 in the Hall on Friday 6 July 9am –10 am.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Congratulations to the following students for their progress in the classroom reward system.

KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION EXPO Nareena Hills Public School will be holding an Information Expo on Tuesday 3 July in the hall from 3:30-4:30. All new kindergarten parents for 2019 are invited to attend. If you know of a friend or neighbour who has a child they wish to start next year, please advise them of this event.

Choral Festival Tickets 2018 The Choral Festival is fast approaching. The children have been rehearsing extremely hard during the Stage 2 singing sessions on Thursdays and more recently at the Figtree Public School Cluster Practice. We would love to have you attend the final performance at Wollongong Town Hall on Wednesday August 1, 2018. This performance date is in Week 2 Term 3.

Tickets

There are restrictions placed on the seating at the Town Hall. All schools have been given a limited number of tickets.

Due to these restrictions there will be a limit of two tickets per child.

These tickets can be purchased through the office at Nareena Hills Public School on any day.

Tickets are $15 each. The children participating in the Choral Festival do not need a ticket.

No online payments will be accepted for this event, no concessions available and tickets will not be sold on the night at the box office. Please note that tickets are numbered for the festival, (but they do not correspond to any seat allocation). Programs will be handed out at the door prior to you making your way to a seat.

If you require more than two tickets, please specify this on the envelope when purchasing your first two tickets. A waiting list will be set up and your name will then be added to the list. We cannot guarantee you will receive any extra tickets.

Please Note: a maximum of 2 extra tickets will be allocated per family.

Tickets will be available for pickup at the office from Thursday 26 July 2018.
