Tennis Victory for Yarrawalla

The Yarrawalla Tennis Club got their fairy tale season finish beating Calivil North by just two games in a thrilling Loddon Valley Tennis Association grand final on Saturday, that displayed a high standard of tennis. The premiership is the first in living memory since the Yarrawalla Tennis club was established in 1898.

Previously, Yarrawalla has had two unsuccessful attempts at grand final wins at

the A grade level, one in 1946 and the other in 2006, both against powerhouse

and juggernaut Calivil North.

The four remaining life members; Graham Moon, Michele Schmidt, Lorraine Dingwall and Robert Moon watched on proudly, reflecting on a club built on generations of family and friendship. Some having been former junior premier-ship players and now parents and grandparents of existing team members. See inside for full match report.

Simon Marks “Big River, Little Stories”

Regional Victorian Tour

Simon Marks has reunited with some of Australia’s finest musicians, including Ben Franz (The Waifs) and Syd Green (19-Twenty) to record his fourth release - “Big River, Little

Stories”.

Marks began his career with an invite to perform at the West Coast Blues and Roots Festival and from here, this engaging live performer has toured the globe and Australia playing to a loyal saddlebag of followers at festivals, concerts, bars and everything in between. Recently relocating to a small town on the banks of the Murray R8iver, inspired Marks to write and record “Big River, Little Stories”. Life among the majestic red gums by the river’s edge evoked the albums theme, based around the area, its people and

the move to life in country Victoria.

Shirley ValentineShirley ValentineShirley ValentineShirley Valentine by the award winning Willy Russell and starring

Mandi Lodge (Menopause The Musical, Just the

Ticket and Always...Patsy Cline).

Shirley Valentine is a wonderfully entertaining

monologue by a 42-year-old Liverpool mother

whose self-esteem has been battered by school,

marriage and life in general. When her best friend

wins a Greek vacation for two, Shirley grasps the

chance to head for the sun, to re-find herself,

follow her dreams and to get a new lease on life.

With much humour, warmth, sympathy, human

insight and a great deal of empathy for his female

protagonist, Willy Russell brilliantly shows

Shirley breaking out of the mould in which she

was cast by society.

“This play is a modern classic and its theme of

achieving your full potential remains universal and

very relevant today.”

Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh has issued an invitation to the constituents of the Murray Plains Electorate to visit Parliament House

for the

Open Day on Sunday 19 March 2017

between 10.30 am and 3.30 pm.

“This is great opportunity for people to have a look at Parliament House and the gardens,” Mr. Walsh said. “Visitors can see Queen’s Hall, the two Chambers, the Parliamentary Library and enjoy a walk through the gardens. “There will also be a variety of musical performances to be enjoyed in Queen’s Hall and the gardens. “The architecture of Parliament House, especially the Legislative Council Chamber is quite remarkable. Over the years there have been refurbishments to the building, but the Council Chamber remains one of the finest examples of the style of building of its time and is well worth a visit.” Mr Walsh said entry was free and there would be exhibits from all departments.

“The annual Open Day provides a perfect

avenue for Victorians to see their

Parliament and to gain an appreciation of

the grandeur of the building,” Mr Walsh

said.

Pyramid Bowling Club

60 & Over

Nothing to report this week as our guys forfeited their match; and only one measly chicken joke. What did the rooster say to the chicken as it was about to cross the road? “Don’t do it, kid. You’ll never her the end of it.”

Saturday Pennant: Last Saturday the first and second semi-finals of the Northern District Bowls Division competition was held with the following results:

Division 1

Kerang 8-66 defeated Leitchville 4-64 - a game that came right down to the wire and went well into over-time with four dead ends to be replayed. Cohuna Golf 12-81 had a comfortable victory over Cohuna 0-54

Division 2

Cohuna Golf White 10-72 defeated Barham Services Blue 2-65 by just 7 shots. Cohuna 8-81 defeated Kerang 4-78 – another tight finish.

Division 3 Cohuna Golf 2-73 narrowly lost to Kerang Blue 10-77 Barham Services 2-60 were just pipped by Kerang White 10-63. Very few points separated most of the teams giving the spectators much entertainment. This week the Preliminary final will be held at Kerang with the following teams taking part.. Division1 = Cohuna Golf v Leitchville Division 2 = Barham Services Blue v Cohuna Division 3 = Kerang White v Cohuna Golf

A/C Fours Tournament Report:

What a magnificent day we had last

Wednesday when 14 teams took to the

greens in high spirits (even though the

bar doesn’t open until 12:00). The

place looked picture perfect and the

weather was kind to us, at last.

Gracious thanks to our generous

sponsors – Moama Bowling Club,

Riverina Bowls & Leisure Wear, &

Laurie & Barb Forde at Gunbower

Roadhouse. Added to their sponsorship,

Jo Eagles brought along her yummy

cakes to add to the raffle prizes. Being

a Star Day each of the Northern District

Clubs was represented with the

inclusion of teams from Boort and

Rochester. After the playing of four

games of eight ends there emerged only

one four game winner- the dynamic

Cohuna combination (J. Maddox, A.

Ainger, T. Hancock & P. Crichton)

who were still on a high from their

recent Mid-week Premiership. Runners

Up were also from Cohuna (M.

Meredith, M. Main, E Lyons & M

Gruar) so it was a clean sweep to the

Cohuna folk. They managed to pip

three other teams who also had three

wins and a loss. Before the start of play

all bowlers rolled to the spider: our

own Graham Moon knew exactly

where to roll and Pam Gould from

Boort took the other prize. A consola-

tion prize was awarded to the team who

did their best but didn’t win a game.

There were two teams in that category

but Gayle Teasdale’s team from

Kerang did it best. Other prizes

included: Lucky Lead – Lorraine Reid,

Lucky Second – Shirley Forbes, Lucky

Third – Marg Bath, Lucky Skip – Marg

L’Huillier. Raffle prizes went to

Shirley Forbes, Linda McManus, Pam

Gould, Bev Woods, Graham Moon &

Wendy Cooke.

Special thanks must be extended to the Catering Committee and their band of workers who did an amazing job. The selection of salads was something to behold, the fresh fruit salad was delectable and the array of slices and cakes for afternoon tea meant no-one went away with an empty tummy and our Club’s reputation for putting on a magnificent spread was still well and truly intact. Thanks to everyone who contributed in any manner at all; it was a very successful outing! Club Competitions Congratulations to Lionel and Andy who took out the Men’s Pairs title with their win over Beau and Graham. They will go on to compete at District Level on March 12th. Ladies Pairs, draw from the bank, competition was played on Tuesday March 7th. Congratulations to Jenny Emenson and Glenys Broad who came out winners (another trophy for Glenys to dust). It’s been a winning year for Glenys. Well done to Kate and Rose who were the Runners Up.

Elders’ Pairs Tournament: Wednesday 8th March is our tournament generously sponsored by Elders and Mulquiny Fuels. Watch for het repot in next week’s Press.

Bus Trip:

A date to put in your diary is the 26th March when we will bus across to the Moama Bowling Club for lunch and some good social interaction. Book your seat on the bus by notifying Lionel of your intention to come along or put your name on the list at the Clubhouse. This event is open to anyone.

Board Meeting

The next meeting of the Board is scheduled for Tuesday 5th April at 8:30pm. Please note the change of starting time due to the conclusion of daylight saving.

final set in a nail biting 7-5 thriller, leaving Yarrawalla

victorious by 2 games.

Members of the 2016-17 premiership team ages range from club stalwart and captain Michele Schmidt down to up and coming third generation player 14 year old Bradley Moon.

The tight knit team held an emergency meeting just weeks before the season was to begin, making the decision to leave their beloved cement pond courts; land that was originally donated to them last century by Walter Ogilvie and move into the Pyramid Hill courts to enable the competition to be viable. The Yarrawalla family was elated after their unexpected win, all except for Nostradamus aka Mitchell Dingwall who confidently predicted the premiership drought ending last August. The premiership-winning plan was born the weekend before on Yarrawalla’s 19th annual end of season bus trip to Goor-nong where they participated in team bonding and used the bus trip to strategize. The junior competition started in 1964 and since then they have been successful at different stages winning A and B grade premierships. A number of the present Senior Premier-ship winning players participated in these grand final wins as juniors. Unfortunately, our juniors were under-manned Saturday against a talented Lake Meran team.

Long live the Yarrawalla Tennis Club!

Triumphant Smiles Leigh Forster and Michele Schmidt

Attention Dog Owners

Exercising Dogs in the Pyramid Hill College

Grounds

It has been noticed that there is an increasing amount of “dog poo” around the playground area of the College. It is totally unacceptable that our students should be subjected to such unpleasantness and unsanitary conditions in their play area. Could all dog owners please refrain from exercising their dogs in the school grounds.

Further action may be necessary,

should the problem continue.

Snippets from the Pyramid Hill Advertiser

March 11, 1942

Misses Elsie and Effie Clarricoates,

Loddon Vale, have received grateful

acknowledgment of Xmas hampers

forwarded by them to 11 members of

the Fighting Forces overseas. The

funds for these gifts were gathered at

an entertainment organised by the two

young ladies mentioned.

Congratulations to the members of the

Younger Set for raising £10 at their

social last week to assist the patriotic

Blood Bank fund. The weather was

exceedingly hot but this did not

hamper a large crowd from thoroughly

enjoying the well-organised dance and

card party.

Fun and pleasure should be paramount

at the St. Patrick Night's celebration in

the local hall next Tuesday, and a big

gathering is anticipated. Old time

dances will be featured in the dance

programme, and Irish airs by a Boort

orchestra will set toes a'tingling arid

hearts aglow. Good cash prizes are

offered for those taking part in the

euchre tournament, and all will be

served with supper. Proceeds are for

the Catholic Welfare Circle, whose

members are constantly preparing

hampers and other comforts for

members of the Fighting Forces

A welcome home social is being

tendered to Pte. Herb Wilson and his

bride at the Durham Ox Hall tonight.

Call to Arms

All men up to sixty Years to Register

Rejected from military service because of physical unfitness and determined to serve his country in the important work of munitions, Walter Morrison is about to take his departure from the district. Fifteen years ago he was nominated by Mr Andrew Blow when the “Little Brother “movement was initiated to bring boys from Scotland and establish them in Victoria. Upon arrival, he was placed with M. Ken McKinnon and it speaks well for both employer and employee that the association has continued unbroken in happy relationship. Mr Angus Blow taught Walter to play the pipes in which art he became very efficient, and later for a term became Pipe Major of the local Pipe Band, also be appointed official piper to the Caledonian Society. He has also represented the society at the annual conferences of the Victorian Scottish Union. The young Scot has also figured prominently as a golfer and carried off many honours in that sport. Mr Morrison was entertained by the Caledonian Society at a parting social at McIver’s Café on Monday evening and received a gift from members. The president Mr AL McGillivray conveyed good wishes to their guest and expressed a fervent hope that when the war dies down he may come back to Pyramid Hill. Mr and Mrs Jack Butterworth were overjoyed last Thursday to receive a telegram from their son Gordon, announcing his safe arrival at an Australian port. Gordon was attached to the Australian Air Force in Malaya, and the story as to how he effected his escape has yet to be learned. Mr Tom Larkins has also received good news of his son Mat, who was wounded when the AIF went into action in Malaya. Mat has arrived in Colombo. He also mentioned having seen Claude Brown in the Malayan jungle, the latter suffering a wound in the head in a brilliant

action with the enemy.

VX33942 Mat Larkins didn’t make it

to Colombo. Sadly he died during the

Japanese advance through Malaya.
