PREFACE
Scientific and technical contacts between nations· have
necessitated the publication of various language textbooks, manuals
and reference books. Particularly important among them are
multilingual scientifio and technical dictionaries. This
English-German-French-Dutch-Russian Dictionary of Scientifio and
Technical Terms contains some 9000 entries. The main fea ture of
the Dictionary is that it includes first and foremost general
scientific terms needed by an engineer working in any branch of
science and technology. Besides, the Dictionary includes the basic
terms used in physics, mathemat ics, the fundamentals of
electrical engineering and chemistry, and also the most essential
terms pertaining to manufacturing processes. machine design,
testing methods, etc.
The Compilers were confronted with a difficult task, as nowadays
science and technology are developing rapidly and the minimum
scientific and tech nical vocabulary required by a specialist is
increasing accordingly.
The Compilers have taken special pains to include the entire basic
mod ern technical vocabulary, omitting superfluous words and
phrases. They have tried to solve this problem by selecting mainly
those scientific and tech nical terms which constitute the basic
of a specialised vocabulary. There fore, the Dictionary includes
the vocabulary pertaining to general study courses in mathematics,
physics and chemistry, and also in electrical engi neering.
electronics and machine design, given in technical colleges
irrespect ive of their specification. This lends the Dictionary an
«all-purpose» char acter, making it equally useful to scientists
and engineers of different countries, who have graduated from
colleges with different curricula.
In the compilation of the English vocabulary of the Dictionary, use
has been made of various English textbooks, manuals and reference
books widely recognised by English-speaking users. The Dictionary
is therefore both com prehensive and up-to-date.
The Appendix contains Indexes of German, French, Dutch and Russian
terms which makes it possible to use the Dictionary when
translating texts from or into any of the languages it deals with
.
. The Compilers and the Publishers will be grateful for comments
and suggestions. They should be forwarded to Kluwer Technische
Boeken BV, Postbox 23 7400 GA Deventer. Holland or to 103012
Moskva, Staropanski per., 1/5, Izdatelstvo «Russki yazyk,.
USING THE DICTIONARY
The English entries are arranged in the Dictionary in alphabetic
order, compound and composite terms being regarded as though they
were spelt as one word. e. g.:
arm armature winding armature core arm of bridge
5
Each Dictionary article consists of the English, German, French,
Dutch and Russian terms separated from one another by two parallel
strokes (II). To refer the user to a synonymous English term, the
word see is used. All German, French, Dutch and Russian terms are
marked m, t, or n for the plural number (where necessary). All the
English terms are preceded by num· bers and letters corresponding
to those following their German, French, Dutch and Russian
equivalents in the Indexes given at the end of the Dictionary. The
English entries are printed in bold-face type.
Thus a Dictionary article appears as follows:
04 object language II Objektsprache f II langage m objet II object·
taal f II 06'beKTHbIH S!3bIK m.
Translations which render different meanings are separated by
numbers, translations which convey similar meanings are separated
by a semicolon, and translations which are synonymous are separated
by a comma.
To save space, the interchangeable parts of synonymous translations
are given in square brackets, e. g.: J1HHeHHaH [nJlOCKaHJ
nOJlS!pHsaIlHH, which is equivalent to: J1HHeHHaS! nOJlHpH3aUHS!,
nJlOCKaH nOJlHpHsaUHS!.
For the same reason, the optional parts of a term are given in
parenthe· ses, e. g.: CKOPOCTb (pacnpocTpaHeHHH) 3BYKa, which is
equivalent to: CKO· POCTb pacnpocrpaHeHHS! 3BYKa, CKOPOCTb
3ByKa.
Grammatical homonyms are given as separate entries, each homonym
being preceded by a Roman number, e. g.:
I pol ar 11 Polare t II polair I II polair f II nOJlHpa f II polar
II polar, Polar ... II polalr II polair II nOJlHpHhlll
Translators of German, French, Dutch or Russian texts should use
the Indexes given at the end of the Dictionary, in which all the
terms are foil· owed by figures and letters corresponding to those
preceding their English equivalents in the body of the
Dictionary,
If a word, e.g. the adjective a6coJilOTHblii or the substantive
nOAnpOrpaM Ma, is followed by several consecutive numbers, the
user should look up all the terms given under these numbers. He
will find phrases incorpora. ting the word concerned, e. g.
a6coJilOTHblii MaKcHMYM, a6COJIIOTHag TeM nepaTypa Qf oH6J1HoTt"Ka
nO)J.nporpaMM. If he fails to find the phrase he needs, he. should
be able to form it on the analogy to the phrases given in the
Dictionary.

VORWORT
Grundlagenfiichern Mathematik, Physik, Chemie, Elektrotechnik,
technischen Hochschulen beliebiger Fachrichtungen unterrichtet
Fachliteratur in diesen Sprachen ermoglicht.

HINWEISE FOR DIE BENUTZUNG Die englischen Stichworter sind
alphabetisch geordnet, wobei ein aus
mehreren W5rtern bestehender Terminus wie ein zusammengeschriebenes
Wort aufgefaf3t wird, z, B.;
7
Vermerk see (siehe) verwendet. AIle deutschen, franzosischen,
(pl) versehen. Aile englischen Termini sind numeriert, urn eine
Benutzung der deutschen, franzosischen, niederliindischen und
russischen Register zu ermoglichen. Die Numerierung erfolgt fur
jeden Buchstaben getrennt. Die englischen Stichworter sind
fettgedruckt. Demzufolge sieht ein Wortartikel folgendermaBen
aus:
04 object language II Objektsprache f 1I1angage m objet 1\ object·
taal f II o6beKTHblH lISblK m
zung in eckige Klammern geschlossen, z. B.: JIHHeHHall [IlJIOCKall]

nJIOCKall nOJIlIpHSaUHlI.
CKO· POCTb (pacnpocTpaHeHHlI) SSYKa, was gelesen wird: CKOPOCTb
romischen Ziffern gekennzeichnet, z. B.:
I polar II Polare f 1\ polaire t II polair t 1\ nOJIlIpa t II polar
1\ polar, Polar •.• II polaire 1\ pol air /I nOJIHpHblA.
Fiir die Obersetzung aus dem Deutschen, Franzosischen, Niedermindi·
schen bzw.
Stichwort entspre· chend numeriert.
Dort findet man Wortverbindungen,

present dictionnaire anglais-allemand fran~ais-neerlandais-russe

INDICATIONS POUR l'UTILISATION DE CE DICTIONNAIRE
arm armature winding armature core arm of bridge
9
referer a un autre synonyme anglais on utilise Ie signe see (voir).
correspond ants. Les termes vedettes anglais sont composes en
caracteres demi·gras. La presentation des articles est donc la
suivante:
04 object language II Objektsprache f II langage m objet II object·
taal f II 06'beKTHbIH H3b1K m.
I polar II Pol are f II polaire f II polair f II nOJlHpa f II polar
II polar, Polar ... II polaire II polair II nOJlHpHblA
correspondent aux termes an· glais vedettes.
substan· tif nOAnporpaMMa porte plusieurs numeros· consecutifs

taalkundige hulpmlddelen, waaronder meertalige
technisch-wetenschappelijke woordenboeken een bijzon dere plaats
innemen.
BV, Postbus 23 7400 GA Deventer, Holland of 103012 Moskva,
bijvoorbeeld
I polar (a Is substantivum) II polar (a Is adiectivum)
arabisehe cijfers, bijvoorbeeld AS8 accelerator - I. versneller m
bijvoorbeeld: a6COJllOTHblH MaKcHM)'M, a6COJllOTHaSl TeM nepaTypa
of 6H6J1HOTeKa nO,l{npOrpllMM.
