Following Penumbra in April, and in asignificant coup for Adelaide, the SamstagMuseum presents Primavera 07, a dynamicsurvey of leading young Australian artistsunder the age of 35 years. Produced annuallysince 1992 by Sydney’s Museum ofContemporary Art, Primavera 07’s tour toSouth Australia marks the first occasion thisrenowned exhibition has been presentedanywhere outside of Sydney.

In June, and coinciding with the SALA Festival, the Samstag Museum has commissionedwriter and curator, Timothy Morrell, toproduce an exhibition that examines SouthAustralian art practice. His exhibition, Uneasy, suggests that for many South Australianartists, the popular notion of their home stateas a strange and sometimes ’uneasy’ place hasencouraged them to make work closelyattuned to the sense of global insecurity:that for all our virtues and optimism, localmythology continues to emphasise a darker, more perverse environment of bizarremurders, a place of threatened survivalclinging precariously to the desert edge.

From 29 August, in an exhibition that stepsfrom the shadows of computer games andleaves mouse, keyboard and joystick behind,Experimenta Playground re-invents thegallery space as a playground environment, creating fields of interaction on both aphysical and psychological level. Featuringinteractive and screen-based artworks byleading Australian and overseas media artists, the exhibition explores the notion that play isa means through which we are able to makesense of the world.

Concurrently with Playground, the SamstagMuseum features the iconic work, Tide Table,a celebrated animated film by internationallyacclaimed artist William Kentridge, whoseunique practice offers a distinctive vision ofthe complex history of his native South Africa, the legacy of apartheid and, more broadly, thenature of human emotions and memory.Presented courtesy of the Art Gallery of NSW,Tide Table exemplifies Kentridge’s technique ofmaking charcoal drawings on a single page, that are successively amended and filmed.

The Samstag Museum’s final exhibition for2008, From Here to Eternity, opens31 October and continues to 30 January 2009.It presents a selection of marvellous andsplendidly crafted tapestry works from theVictorian Tapestry Workshop. Regarded as aworld centre for one of Western civilisation’soldest and richest art forms, the VictorianTapestry Workshop boasts an internationalreputation for the freshness, vitality and technicalexcellence of its hand-woven tapestries.

To complement Eternity, the Samstag Museumhas commissioned Adelaide’s MelindaRackham, executive director of the AustralianNetwork of Art & Technology, to curateCoded Cloth, an exhibition of ’interactivetextile, clothing works, jewellery and shoes’that entwine the skill-based practices of mediaarts with object, textile and fashion design.

SASA Gallery

The following exhibitions will all be heldat the SASA Gallery in 2008.www.unisa.edu.au/art/sasagallery/calendar.asp

Exhibition LaunchWednesday 9 April 2008 - 6.00pm

Guest Scholar Anne Brennan

An installation consisting of two obliquelyinterrelated works: a hand-knitted textile workfor the gallery floor and a composite collagework for the three gallery walls. In thisexhibition the gallery space becomes the openspace, or agora. It may be thought of as atransit region, where destinations are unknown.

The work addresses cultural memory and loss. Its particular focus is on the experience ofcultural loss in relation to basic humanbelonging; it deals with the meaningsattached to the experience of being in and outof place, and the memories of city spaces, traversed in the past, re-imagined in the present.

The wall piece consists of thousands of papercuts that together form a vast cityscape, suggesting an ’everywhere/nowhere’ urbanworld made small. Another collection consistsof random human figures that together formcrowds in which each individual is at onceanonymous and present.

The floor piece comprises colourful hand-knittedpatches, made from cut up used plasticshopping bags. This knit-work attempts torecover what is lost, but cannot provide it inessence. While the ‘homely’ quality of thiswork may invite touch, this comforting aspectis deceptive: it is incapable of offering anynurturing warmth.

This work attempts the impossible: tore-construct completeness by any availablemeans. But the collections remain incompleteand may be understood as metaphors for theperpetual sense of loss that is at the heart ofall human experience.

Guest ScholarProfessor Ian McLean

Cinderella II - The Dreamer is a hybrid ofdrawing with interaction and performance, installation, video and sound. It representsa further investigation of issues addressedin the installations: Living Edge (2006) andSkin of The Wall (2006). The work exploresperceptions of the home and domestic spaceas a site of dreaming and habitation, wherethe imaginary and the real co-exist and howone informs the other. During the course ofthe creation process, friends and colleagueswere invited to collaborate in the projectby sharing their desires. The goal was to’materialize’ these dreams by convertingthem into installation objects.

Forthcoming study: Functional Foods andNutraceuticals for a Changing World – a new collaboration between Manitoba(Canada) and South Australia.

The increasing prevalence of abdominalobesity and accompanying risk factors fordiabetes and cardiovascular disease is placinga significant burden on our local population aswell as the global population. Prevention andmanagement using functional foods, such aslow fat dairy products, can decrease theeconomic burden and enhance quality of life.Early concerns about dairy fat and cholesterolimpacted adversely on the dairy industry, yetrecent observations suggest that dairy mayoffer important cardiovascular and metabolichealth benefits.

UniSA’s Nutritional Physiology Research Centreand the Richardson Centre for FunctionalFoods and Nutraceuticals, University ofManitoba, will conduct a joint clinical trial tosee whether increased consumption of dairycan improve body composition and counteractdisease in at-risk individuals.

Watch for further details about recruitment forthis research trial at www.unisa.edu.au/nutritional.physiology in April/May 2008.

Surface Engineered Silica for WaterTreatment

Tuesday 12 August 20086.00pm - 7.00pmMawson Lakes campus, Room MC1-02

Lecturer: Professor Peter Majewski, Professorof Nanotechnology and Nanomanufacturing.

The recent report entitled ’Water for People -Water for Life’ of UNESCO World WaterAssessment Program emphasises that theavailability of potable and drinking water is ofmajor socio-economic importance worldwide. It also clearly states the importance offoreseeing water economy in terms of use, availability, quality, and technologies.

The report also emphasizes that organicpollutants in water are the main reason forwater-related diseases, such as diarrhoea, worm infections and infectious diseases. In addition, organic residues are the mostfrequent pollutants in waste-water of majorindustry, such as pulp and paper, textiles andleather, iron and steel, and petrochemicalsand refineries.

The recently developed surface engineered silicapowder has significant potential in the removalof organic contaminants and pathogens fromwater and even desalination. The public lecturewill review the recent development of thismaterial and its potential in water treatment.

The birth of ideas and the death oftechnology

Tuesday 22 July 2008Bradley Forum, Hawke Building, Level 5,City West campus

Lecturer: Professor Malcolm Wright

One of the defining characteristics of modernwestern societies is the rate of change.

Many major corporations of today are basedon products that did not exist 20 years ago –for example Google, Microsoft, Nokia andLenovo. Marketing professionals have alwaysbeen concerned with such change; how newideas and products enter society, how theydisplace their competitors and then growover time whilst obsolescent products alsobegin to disappear.

With examples ranging from steam locomotivesto the growth of broadband, this session willpresent the facts and folklore about theproduct lifecycle and how the application ofmarketing science can help confront thechallenge of technological transformation.

Who are judges writing for?

Tuesday 23 September 2008Bradley Forum, Hawke Building, Level 5,City West campus

Lecturer: Professor Vicki Waye

To successfully access the law, the public mustbe able to understand it.

Understanding is dependent upon goodcommunication. When communicating the law, judges face an inevitable tension betweenconciseness and amplification. Concisenessmakes the message clear, but when carried toofar hides reasoning that ought to be subject topublic scrutiny. On the other hand, too muchamplification makes the law arcane except for asmall group of elite legal specialists. Ideally thebalance between conciseness and amplificationshould be determined by the intended audienceof the judgment. Compared with judgmentsfrom other jurisdictions, Australian judgmentstend to be long and complex. Are the Australianjudiciary writing for a different kind of audienceto their judicial counterparts elsewhere? Justwho are Australian judges writing for?

The political economy of superannuationin AustraliaFriday 11 April 2008 - 5.00pmBradley Forum, Hawke Building, Level 5,City West campusLecturer: Professor Rhonda SharpSince the early 1990s, superannuation hasbeen promoted by governments as thepathway to better retirement for allAustralians. But is this the case? Makingsuperannuation the primary form of retirementincome has produced a number ofconsequences. One is the development of alarge and powerful private funds industry, andanother has been to impose an annual cost tothe federal government budget in the form oftaxation concessions. Furthermore, shiftingretirement funding to superannuation has haddifferent impacts on different people, inparticular women because of their relativelylower lifetime earnings tending to accumulateless superannuation. This lecture traces the riseof superannuation as a central component ofAustralia’s retirement incomes policy andexamines its gender and class-basedassumptions and impacts.Contact:The Hawke Institute on 08 8302 4369www.unisa.edu.au/hawkeinstitute

Literacy practices in a participatory cultureFriday 22 August 2008 - 5.00pmBradley Forum, Hawke Building, Level 5,City West campusLecturer: Professor Victoria CarringtonInvestigating the link between literacy, identityand culture, this lecture utilises a range of textsto examine the implications of shifting towardsa ’participatory culture’ (Jenkins, 2006). The’hidden curriculum’ of this emerging culturalframe values particular skills sets, knowledgeand practices around a range of media.Professor Carrington suggests that the out-of-school literacy practices – those practices thatinvolve the use of technologies to producetexts of various textures within a social context– of many young people reflect the contoursand requirements of this participatory culturerather than those rewarded by school-basedcurricula. Thus, a move in the direction of newforms of participation has implications for theways in which young people construct identityaround their use of media, text and literacy. Italso has implications for the ways in whicheducators conceptualise the literacy curriculumand the pedagogies deployed.Contact:The Hawke Institute on 08 8302 4369www.unisa.edu.au/hawkeinstitute

The lie of history and the poetics of human habitatsFriday 24 October 2008 - 5.00pmBradley Forum, Hawke Building, Level 5,City West campusLecturer: Professor Alan MayneThis lecture’s title contains deliberateambiguities, because innovative and effectivehistorical interpretation begins withambiguities. Building upon those ambiguitiessustains its ’situated’ character: by focusing onspecific temporal, spatial and imaginary worlds. Thus it uncovers fresh surviving clues about awidening range of places in the past and thelives played out within them, exposing thepretence of many historians to understand thepast unambiguously as it ’really was’. However, good history’s deep poetics are situated not onlyin the knowledge of the past gleaned usingthese temporal, spatial and imaginary planes;its interpretations must also attempt to influenceprogressive policy-making today. In mosthuman habitats in the early 21st century, lifechoices are circumscribed by entrenched socialdisadvantage, with 40 percent of the populationliving below the World Bank’s poverty line. Thismust surely shape the poetics of history in 2008.Contact:The Hawke Institute on 08 8302 4369www.unisa.edu.au/hawkeinstitute

Gavin Wanganeen is one of South Australia’s most revered sportsmen:Brownlow medallist…premiership player…five-time All-Australian…legendary Portplayer…and the first Indigenous AFL life member. This AFL legend has generously lenthis name and his support to a unique UniSA scholarship. In this special report, Gavinexplains why he is so passionate about supporting the Scholarship that bears his name.

As a young fellow, I dreamed of one day representing my state and my country in the game I love.I am humbled that I was given the opportunity to make my dreams come true. I am even morehumbled that I can play a part in giving that same opportunity to others through the Gavin Wanganeen Indigenous Scholarship.

It’s hardly surprising that this is the first scholarship of its kind in the nation, given that UniSA wasthe first Australian university to include a clear commitment to the education of Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islanders in its charter.

Many disadvantaged Indigenous students continue to fall just outside the eligibility for an Abstudyliving allowance. These are bright, motivated students who face substantial barriers in achieving theiracademic potential. This $5,000 per year scholarship provides a unique opportunity for worthy youngAustralians to achieve their academic goals.

Some of us get to achieve lots of things in life and some don’t achieve much: not due to lack oftalent, but due to lack of support or financial disadvantage.

I want to give disadvantaged Indigenous people the opportunity to achieve their academic potential. The students supported through this scholarship will not only realise their own dreams, they willcontribute enormously to making this a better world in so many ways.

This program really is a team effort, and I urge UniSA alumni and supporters of this great University toconsider making a special contribution to this unique scholarship.
