This accounts for 5,912 different codes. The codes are based on the book „Ergebnisse der Volkszählung in Albanien (Schriften der Balkankommission, Linguistische Abteilung XIII)“ by Franz Seiner, published in 1922. H-1Number of the house (hausnr)

Technical: numeric variable, position 6, 4 digits.

Description: The number of the house is entered here (column 2 of the form). This information is entered only for household heads and will be added to all members of the household automatically. If it is not clear, which number applies to this person, the previous number will be entered. Subdivisions of numbers of houses, e.g. “75/1”, are replaced by non-existing numbers, e.g. “1000” and the original information will be entered in the variable “Remarks” and on the documentation sheet for this settlement.

Page 17: Die Liste der einzelnen Variablen:  · Web viewQuestion marks replace illegible letters. A question mark in front of a word indicates a hardly legible word. An exclamation mark (!)

H-2Running number of the household (hhnr)

H-3Family within household (fam)

Technical: numeric variable, position 8, 2 digits.

Description: This variable distinguishes between families within the same household. This information is indicated by brackets in column 4 of the form. All persons, contained in one bracket, get the same number. This number always starts with “1” within every household. If there are no brackets in the form, the data entry assistant has to distinguish families within the same household. Families besides that of the household head are made up of married couples. The families of these married couples include their unmarried children, unmarried siblings, and widowed parents. A widowed person with unmarried child(ren) also forms a family. This only applies to widowed persons, who are no parent of a head of another family within the household. Other relatives, especially mothers, who are registered at the end of the household, belong to the family of the household head. Persons, who are not related to the other people of the household, like servants, belong also to the family of the household head. Such unrelated persons will also form separate families if they are married or widowed with unmarried children. Widowed household heads without unmarried children form a family together with the first married or widowed child. Married persons without spouse form separate families, even in case of no unmarried children. Families of married parents of the household head also include unmarried siblings of the household head.

P-04Relationship to household head (vhh)

One has to bear in mind that the information in column 7 of the form may be in relation to the family within the household and not in relation to the household head. In addition this information may be related to the person in the previous line and not to the household head. There must be a household head in every household. If no person is indicated as household head, the first person in the household will be coded as household head. Supplementary information can be derived from columns 8 and 9 (sex), 10 and 11 (date of birth or age), 12 (place of birth), and 16 (marital status).

The 4-digit-code contains the following information:digit 1: generationdigit 2: subdivision of relatives in this generation

0: direct line of the household head1: spouse2. direct line of spouse of household head3. spouse4: sibling5: spouse of sibling6: relative7: spouse of relative8: not related to household head9: spouse of not related person

Digits 1 to 3 indicate the general relationship to the household head and the fourth digit distinguishes variants of this relationship.

The criterion for entering the data is a share of more than 20 percent of Orthodox Christians within the population of the settlement (according to Franz Seiner’s published statistics). 57 settlements with 19,871 inhabitants (according to Seiner) belong to this category. This information is needed for weighting the results of research.

NT-13Sample no. (stichpro)

Technical: numeric variable, position 67, 2 digits.

Description: This variable contains the information about the sample, to which the respective settlement belongs. All settlements, that are not included in the categories combined in the variable “not in samples”, are divided into 20 samples of 5 percent each. These samples were created in such a way that an equal number of settlements of the seven prefectures (Bezirke) are in each sample (for getting geographic equality). The 20 samples consist of 1,093 settlements and 333,413 inhabitants.

NT-14Weight (gewicht)

Technical: numeric variable, position 68, 2 digits.

Description: This variable is used for weighting cases according to sampling: settlements not in the samples are entered completely, while the settlements in the samples are only partially entered. The weight for the sampled settlements is now 20, because only 5 percent are entered yet.
