BLACK TEAA JOURNEY THROUGH INDIA

“A journey is not simply a picture or a memory, it is an
experience, a feeling, an emotion, a discovery. Outside
in the world, in our mind, our body, and overall, in our soul…”

introI left Chile for the first time in 1998, a personal
journey that completely changed my
perception of freedom. I was 15 years old, and
since then my travel spirit and willingness has
been a perpetual cycle of growth.
With my backpack as a portable home,
my thirst for discovery, and my unforgettable
friend, Photography, we went through 12 years,
19 countries, 5 continents, jungles, deserts,
islands, oceans and cities, between nature and
civilization.
I had the opportunity to live in the middle of the
Pacific Ocean, to share the waters of the Great
Barrier Reef with whales and sharks, to explore
the Pantanal’s rivers in the search of jaguars,
to discover the Indian subcontinent and to
get involved with local communities, sharing
experiences and knowledge.
It was in 2006, working for the protection of sea
turtles during my Ecotourism internship with
Projeto TAMAR, in Fernando de Noronha, Brazil,
that my vision and travel goals focused on the
environment and its safety.
It was no longer to experience and see the world,
but also to learn and take an active role in the
preservation and conservation of nature.
For a long time, my photographic work was
characterized by capturing images of wildlife
and nature, amazingly finding myself in remote
and unique places, some practically untouched
by human kind.
Chicken Ride | Kolkata, West Bengal
4| Years went by, between the unknown oceanic
islands of Chile, the ethnic province of Yunnan
in China, the beautiful smiles of Laos, the
Australian lifestyle and an exciting Portugal, I
travelled around the world capturing images
and experiences of a fulfilling experience.
Along the way, I immerse myself in diverse
cultures, unknown languages and amazing
landscapes, such as the Himalayas and the
Andes, the highest summits of the world, getting
to know their natural and human secrets, always
following the signs and learning with great
curiosity and understanding of how the world
became what we see today.
In early 2010, it was time to uncover the mysteries
of India – a spiritual place, real, unknown…
I found myself in the middle of a pilgrimage of
thousands of people around Arunachala, the
sacred mountain of Tiruvannamalai; I shared
experiences with volunteers from around the
world in an ecological community at Auroville;
I crossed the waters of the Bengal Sea to the
Andaman Islands; travelled through this
magical land by train and easily hitchhiked the
forgotten territories of Northeast India.
The following images are a compilation of my
journey across this wonderful and astonishing
country, where emotions, spirituality, traditions,
nature and friendship become an everyday
event, coming to realize that life is out there,
here and everywhere.
riqueza inimaginable.
En el camino, estuve inmerso en culturas
diversas, idiomas desconocidos y parajes
en una comunidad ecológica de Auroville;

BLACK TEAA JOURNEY THROUGH INDIA

ciudades, caminando descalzo
por pueblos interiores, dan-
do vueltas a montañas sagradas, descubriendo
sonrisas, contrastes y culturas, llegue a conocer
una India curiosa, intrigante y profundamente
abierta.
a extremos emocionales, a enamoramientos
vivenciales entre personas y lugares.
Entre Tamil Nadu, Andaman Islands, Calcuta
y Arunachal Pradesh, descubrí India con mis
ojos, y los invito a conocerla también.
Everything starts once on the ground, whether
on a motorbike, a rick-shaw, a train or just
leaving my footprints.
The landscape, a sample of human labour,
bright shining sun and living traditions buried in
every particle of dust.
Among flower tributes, looks and devotions, I find
myself in the middle of a living culture that doesn’t
hides, where the reality of the people doesn’t
stop to show its essence, whether they are poor,
grownups or kids, they are simply themselves.
Going through the chaotic city streets,
walking barefoot through small interior villages,
surrounding a sacred mountain, discovering
smiles, contrasts and cultures, I found myself
with a curious, challenged and deeply involved
India.
What you see is not always what you think,
surprises are diverse, you find beaches that
are not what you expected, you witness
influences of historical colonization – such
as children playing cricket – and a handful
of smiles on a town characterized by the
differences between its people.
This land, sacred for many, take us on a journey
into oneself, to the corners of the heart, the
edges of emotions and vivid loves between
people and places.
Whether in Tamil Nadu, Andaman Islands, Kolkata
and Arunachal Pradesh, I discovered India with
my eyes, and now invite you to get to know it
as well.

algunos lavan ropa, juegan, duermen o beben
ciudad.
Incredibly, only in a few days walking through
the streets of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu,
I realize how intensely contrasting life can be in
one place.
From humble smiles to awakening curiosity, the
sidewalks become alive meanwhile people
wash their clothes, play, sleeps or drink an early
Chai.
Some of them go to school, with their shiny
uniforms, stylized haircuts, schoolbags full of
books, and with a fixed look, shut to whatever
happens in the living roads of the way.
My feelings observing the streets waking up were
diverse. In the way I found complete families
sleeping next to each other on the footsteps of
restaurants, clothing stores, markets and others.
Early in the morning, I analyzed the present
moving life, the sunrays highlights the city,
showing its harsh reality.
With a black tea on hand, I wake up and
continue to explore the corners of this magical
place.

marzo.
Una peregrinación, acompañada por
ofrendas, colores, sacrificios, oraciones y
miedos, recorre cada rincón, con todo un
pueblo reunido en celebración.
Aquí encontré amistad, simplicidad y paz,
donde decidí nuevamente continuar, a
descubrir y a explorar.
Departing from Madras, I leave continental India
to explore Andaman Nicobar Islands.
After five days of intense boat ride through the
Bengal Sea, surprisingly, this tropical paradise
has many things to share.
With wide open arms, I was welcome by
whole families, intense celebrations and a
magical nature, finding myself again in an Island
landscape.
In a certain way, I find a diversified India, po-
pulated by Muslims, Hindus, Tamils and natives.
Immigration from the continent has been
intensified after the Tsunami of 2004, an event
that completely changed the landscape and
the development of this area.
Protected by the shade of a tree, I begin to hear
some music in the distance, a parade is coming
closer, and there is a huge mass of people
celebrating Lord Murugan during March’s full
moon day.
A peregrination, filled with gifts, colours,
sacrifices, prayers and fears, walks around
the villages, with the whole town gathered to
celebrate.
Here I found friendship, simplicity and peace,
where I decided to continue, to discover and
explore.

establecer me.
Keeping myself faithful to the Indian Rail Sleeper
Class, I head towards the capital of West Bengal.
After a journey of 28 hours, I arrive to Howrah
and immediately a feeling of individuality and loneliness fills my soul. I grab my backpack, and
started walking through the streets looking for
a place to stay.
It was early in the morning, the city was walking
up, the flowers made their way to the temples,
and the white vapours of Chai fled to the sky.
I realize we live looking at a social display window
in the middle of clean and shining cities, hiding
reality from the actual world. Here, the streets are
alive, every inch is used in different ways, such as
homes, workshops, or even a spiritual place.
Always as a visitor and never as a tourist, I go
around the streets of New Market, observing
the transformation of a city marked by the
immigrants from other Indian states, in search
of a certain dignity.
Every day, in the morning, day or night, Kolkata
never hides, and allows me to immerse in its
intimacy.

Sea negra, blanca,
budista, hindú o musulmana, rica o pobre,
Searching for peace and a different India, I
found myself at the footsteps of valleys and
mountains of the northeast states.
I wanted to be alone with myself, in a place
with no foreigners in some ways due to the
possibility of terrorist attacks. I became more an
attraction for the locals just because of being
by myself.
I arrived to Arunachal Pradesh, where I spent
most of my time in Tawang Gompa, the second
biggest Buddhist monastery in the world, part
of the Tibetan order. I spent most of my time
sharing with young Lamas (monks), speaking
about origins and history, trying to understand
the essence of the Monpa people.
Getting lifts from Nepalese drivers, military men
and civilians, in different types of transportation,
I met different characters, observed every step,
sharing a conversation or a laugh, with the
constant company of a phrase I heard at the
beginning of my trip; “there are many flowers
on the way”.
History, a book, a picture or a report does not
define a country. Either black, white, Buddhist,
Hindu or Muslim, wealthy or poor, INDIA is a place
with a genuine identity, where every ingredient,
colour and aroma, make of this country, a
delicious taste to try.

inimaginable, me dio amor, energía, fortaleza
Keep Nature Natural.

It’s not easy to express in just a few words my
gratitude to all the experiences I lived through in
the last years. Not only because of the people I met
in the way, but also due to my own experience;
the many joys, conversations, different points of
view, emotions, fears and adventures that I run to.
From the depths of my heart I thank those who
made of these years such a marvellous time, full
of life, teachings, realizations and reality, who
where involved in this adventure, following my
dreams and diverse adventures.
I carry with me all the people I met along the
way, those I left behind, and also my family and
friends, who opened the doors for me, and
supported my journey.
The world has been my host in a truly
extraordinary way; it gave me love, energy,
strength and confidence, it showed me its
shape, its soul, its smile, and its pain.
With special thanks to the creatures of the ocean,
the sky, the mountains and the jungle; of the
world.
Keep Nature Natural.
