Integrating personalized learning plans for SPED students
During the 2016 - 2017 school year, the district partnered with eSpark Learning to launch a pilot at the junior high schools for students with special needs.
eSpark is a software that individualizes student instruction through the use of technology. Because each child’s learning needs are different, the program complements classroom instruction to ensure each student is receiving content at their level.

NWEA MAP Analysis
NWEA MAP ANALYSIS
Achievement Impact Methodology
+ DATA comes from NWEA MAP
○ A rigorous, adaptive, and respected non-profit assessment
○ Independent validation
+ Percentile gains
○ Benchmarks growth relative to similar students nationwide
○ Average growth means no change in percentiles
○ There are 82 eSparking students with Fall and Spring test scores
+ Share of expected fall growth
○ NWEA reports an expected amount of growth given an average school year for each student based on her Fall scores
○ We compare how every student grew relative to expectations in areas she targeted in eSpark relative to areas she did not
target
○ There are 68 students that meet the criteria for Goal/NonGoal growth
+ Growth correlated with eSpark usage
○ We measure percentile shift and correlate with the number of missions completed
62
Students outpaced their peers
NWEA MAP ANALYSIS
Average = 12
Average = 14
63
Students shifted 2 percentiles
NWEA MAP ANALYSIS
Between the Fall and Spring assessments, Washington Local eSpark students gained 2
national percentile points
64
+ Typically, percentile growth is zero for a given student.
+ This is true even when students learn new content because percentiles are relative.
+ As a group, Washington Local eSpark students grew faster than their peers nationwide

eSPARK SUCCESSES & RESULTS
We can tease out the eSpark effect on student growth
+ We have been looking at Percentile Gains which capture learning across
all domains.
+ Students typically do not use eSpark for all domains within a given
discipline.
+ How do we know that eSpark is effective in the domains it targets?
68
Students grew 90% more in their eSpark focus areas
