    Why Bake Cookies For Kairos?

Many in prison have hit bottomthe lowest possible point in their lives. They feel isolated, cast

out, alone, and unloved. For many, their families and friends have abandoned them. Often the cookyou bake are the only indication to them that they have not become completely abandoned.

Each Kairos Weekend lasts four days. On Saturday of every weekend a bag of homemade cookies i

delivered to every resident (over 1,200) in every cell at that institution by Kairos volunteers.

Your homemade cookies tell the residents that someone who doesnt even know them still cares

enough to give them somethingthe time it takes to bake the cookieswithout wanting some-

thing in return. Such selflessness is often a unique experience for them. It also teaches them to trus

Most inmates in the prison system are takers, not givers. This brief experience of sharing somethinof value freelyoften with those they do not likehas a powerful effect.

During the Sussex II State Prison Kairos weekend approximately 3000 dozen cookies are needed fo

cell delivery and during the three full days of classes and discussions. No cookies are ever wasted.

All types of cookies are neededCookies should be no larger than 2 in diameter. This size doe

not break as easily as larger ones. Do not make thin crisp cookies as they break too easily and cann

be used. Do not use powdered sugar topping or use any fruit such as raisins or currants or

    M&Ms in the cookies.

Once the cookies cool completely, place one dozen each in individual clear Ziploc bags and take

them to the church kitchen. There will be several boxes placed in the kitchen from Saturday 4/19 t

Wednesday 4/23 marked Kairos Cookies. While you are preparing the cookies, we ask that you

pray for the people who will eat them.

The next Kairos weekend begins on April 24. Cookies will be collected from the church kitch

by a Kairos team member by noon on Wednesday April 23. If you have any questions just ca

Mike Langrehr at 757-775-5297 or call Rusty Norton at 814-1091.

Thank you for your enthusiastic response to the needs of the Kairos ministry to the Sussex II StatePrison. From my own local jail ministry, I can attest that these folks appreciate genuine "loving"contact with the world they left behind. Holding out your hand to strangers brings a spiritual blessthat adds warmth to your heart and spring to your step.Remember Matthew 25:31-40
