Are You Looking for a Circle of Friends? A Small Group May Be the Answer. Here at Denbigh United we have several Small Groups and are eager to start more. A Small

Group is a group of 6-12 people who meet weekly or every other week for Bible study/discussion,

prayer, fellowship and service. Deep and abiding friendships can grow in these groups as believers

student God’s Word and support one another.

Our existing groups are listed below. If you are interested in an existing group or in being a

part of a new group, please contact Deborah Dail or Tim Jacoby.

Sunday evenings (every other week) from 6:30-8 p.m. This group meets at the church and

childcare is provided. The facilitator is Kristi Spivey, and the group is currently studying

Managing Life. For information, call Kristi at (757) 814-9538.

Sunday evenings (every other week) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This group meets at the home of

Dale and Keith Pennell. The group discusses the Sunday sermons. For more information,

contact Dale Pennell at (757) 303-7762.

Monday evenings (every week) beginning May 5 at 7:30 p.m. This group meets at the

home of Tim and Debbie Jacoby. The group is studying Angels Among Us. For more infor-

mation, contact Tim Jacoby at (412) 720-4808.

Thursday afternoons from 1:00-3:00 p.m. there is a Small Group at the home of Jay and

Mary Lee Dunn studying about Mary, Mother of Christ.

The Adult Bible Class is taught by Jay Dunn and Bob Young. During the spring quarter (March

through May) the Adult Bible Class will be studying a variety of Old and New Testament books with

an emphasis on exploring the connections between Jesus and the Hebrew Scriptures. The class

meets Sunday mornings at 9:15 in the Fellowship Room.

The Ladies Discussion Group is studying Where Faith and Culture Meet. This series of six DVDs

and the study book will engage you in Bible study discussion regarding bold ways to discover God’s

challenge in each of us - to minister to our culture - and what that means to you. If interested in

joining us, please contact Amy Schmidt at [email protected]. This class meets at 9:15 on

Sunday mornings in the Parlor.

Living as a Committed Christian in the Kingdom in the 21st Century Class

The class, featuring a small group discussion/seminar format, will use relevant Scripture to consider

the implications of how a Christian might deal with such issues as: healthcare, poverty, affluence,

inequality, education, individualism and community, human rights, diversity, violence, the Jesus of

the Gospels, Christian responsibilities, and other issues that might surface or become prominent in

the news. Mike Langrehr will facilitate this class which will meet in the Library. Please join us at

9:15 a.m.

Peanut butter

Fruit Jelly/Jam

Cereal Crackers

Gravy Dry or canned Potatoes

Beans Canned meals (stew, ravioli,

etc.)

THRIVE Peninsula formerly

D.U.C.O. (Denbigh United Christian

Outreach) is in critical need of food

supplies. Each week the need is

greater than the week before. We

thank you in advance for all of your

support. You may bring your food do-

nations to church and place them on

the kitchen counter where they are

picked up and taken to D.U.C.O. each

week.

JUST A

REMINDER……

Articles for the June Digest are due in the

office by 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 19,

2014. Any announcement you wish to

have in the Sunday bulletin must be

called in, emailed, or delivered to the

office by noon on Thursdays with the

exception of the summer months (June,

July and August) when the deadline will

be Wednesdays at noon.

THANK YOU !

Did you miss a recent Sunday at church and

wish you could go back and hear the sermon, or

maybe you were there and are just trying to

remember what was said? Well fear not, you are

in luck! Just go to our website

www.denbighpres.org, look on the left side for

2014 Sermons, and find the Sunday you may

have missed. There are both audio and text

versions for most sermons, which you can

download or stream online. Also, a full

recording of the entire service can be obtained if

you make a request through the church office.

Older sermons are archived and can also be

made available if you are looking for a particular

one as well.

S.H.A.R.E. Dates for May

May 2014 S.H.A.R.E. orders will be placed the week of April 28-May

2. The May orders will be distributed in the Narthex area of Denbigh

United Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 17 from 7:00-7:30 AM.

All orders must be picked up by 7:30 AM on the distribution date.

Volunteers cannot be held responsible for orders which are not picked

up.

DUPC Volunteers will work at the Food

Bank on Saturday, May 17. Please

contact Ken Bowers for additional

information.

The 2014 Food Bank Volunteer Schedule is now posted on the bulletin board near the kitchen

counter. Please make note of when your group (e.g., PimeTimers, Youth, etc.) is scheduled.

Thank you to Ken Bowers for developing the schedule again this year.

As some of you may know, DUPC conducts a Monday morning worship service at The Gardens at

Warwick Forest four times a year. The Gardens is a Riverside Hospital continuing care facility.

Depending on their physical condition, those in residence may attend the chapel service or watch the

live televised program from the comfort of their rooms. This month, over twenty DUPC members

participated in the worship service as greeters, in singing, as comforters, and in general support of

this outreach. It is a true blessing to see the impact we have on those who may not otherwise have a

worship experience. Are you interested in helping? Participation in this rewarding effort is made

easy. Come and sing, greet, pass out bulletins, or act as a worship leader. For information, please

call Rusty Norton at 757-414-1092 (C) or send an email to [email protected].

Blessings to all, Rusty.

The Session has approved raising funds to purchase

a van or bus. This vehicle will allow us to more

efficiently transport children and adults to all

Church events and provide a way for youth, seniors

and others to travel to activities and service

opportunities. If you would like to contribute,

designate your check “Church Vehicle Fund.” If you

would like to help with fund-raising, contact Verni

Saunders at 874-3923 or [email protected].

Alternative Gifts for Mother’s Day and

Father’s Day to Benefit Haiti Projects. Does

your mother or father have everything they need

or want? Are you struggling to figure out a gift

that will honor the women and men in your life

who have made a difference? Consider making

a gift to the church for a Haiti project in honor

of your loved one. We have beautiful, full-color

cards that you may present to your loved one on

their special day. Stop at the kitchen counter,

select the Haiti project to which you want your

donation designated, make your donation and

receive the card(s). Checks should be made

payable to Denbigh United Presbyterian

Church. The memo line should designate the

Haiti project you select.

If you have donations of coats, sweaters, clothes,

furniture, etc., please consider donating them to

LINK or PORT or others in need. Please remem-

ber the Homeless Shelters are always in need of

new white socks (all sizes), travel-sized toiletries,

blankets, coats and more. If you can donate items

please notify Joe Bender at 757-969-1365 to set

up a time to meet at Denbigh United and he will

gladly take the donated items to where they will

do the most good.

MONTREAT – A gem of the Presbyterian Church nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains. This

wonderful conference center/college/retreat place/and town hosts people of all ages throughout the

year for Conferences on Music and Worship, Youth, Life Long Learning (Road Scholar), Peacemak-

ing, Preaching, Christian Education, Spirituality, and Worship and the Arts.

For the first time in many many years we have a group of youth who will be attending the Youth

Conference July 22-28 with adults Liz Marshall and Barbara and Chip Shefelton. Those youth pres-

ently in grades 8-12 are eligible to attend. At this time we are taking 6 youth. They will join 1000+

youth from all over the country to share in Keynotes, Small Groups, Worship, Music, and Recreation.

Barb and Chip have taken groups for years and have always found it to be a transformative week for

the youth – we have even had youth that went back as adults to be small group leaders and on the

summer college staff.

The cost is about $500 per youth (conference, housing, food and travel). Those going will be work-

ing to raise money to cover the cost. If you would like to partially sponsor a youth or make any small

donations please make a check to DUPC and note Montreat at the bottom. We will have envelopes in

the pews in the next few weeks.

You can learn more about Montreat at www.montreat.org and the youth conference at http://

www.montreat.org/current/2014-youth-conferences-at-montreat. If you have other questions please

see Liz or Barb.

Denbigh United Presbyterian

Pre-Kindergarten The school year is winding down, but that doesn’t mean that we aren’t busy! Our four year olds are learning about how Kindergarten will be both the same and different from preschool. They are going on a field trip to visit a local kindergarten class at R.O. Nelson Elementary School. Our three year olds are learning about how their five senses work. It is lots of fun to see, touch, taste, smell, and listen to different objects, foods, and sounds! Our 2 ½ year old class is preparing for their annual Teddy Bear Picnic. As we finish up the school year, I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the church congregation for your support and kindness over the

last four years. As you may know, I have decided to return to full time work in the public school system beginning in the fall. I have really enjoyed my time working at Denbigh United Presbyterian, and both the school and the church will always hold a special place in my heart. Maggie Vincelette, Director

I would like to thank everyone who prayed, visited, brought

food, sent cards or helped me during my recent accident. It

takes a village to create a caring church and your love and

encouragement lifted me up and kept me going. You cer-

tainly are the church’s saints and mine also. From the bot-

tom of my heart, thank you.

My thanks to all members of the Denbigh United Presbyte-

rian Church family that greeted me on Maundy Thursday

and who continue to pray for me and have send the beauti-

ful cards after my fall on Friday morning. I ask for contin-

ued prayers as I recover and as I prepare for the third

vascular surgery on my leg in May. It is wonderful to be

part of this church family.
