November stock take in CyprusWe, as a nation, realize that the Cyprus direcircumstances of 2013 are mostly self inflicted yet, with the assistance of the IMF, EuropeanCommission and European Central Bank, ( ‘ theTroika’), coupled with a good dose of nationaldetermination and pride, Cyprus has achievedspectacular progress to date.

The government has implemented a long series ofreforms, directives and measures to boost theeconomy and attract investments throughmodernasing legislation, promoting developmentprojects, introducing tax incentives and speeding uplicensing procedures.

New development projects become our vital tool to creating growing economy.According to government sources, there is a ‘notable rise in company registrationsapplications and the tourism industry saw a rising number of investments in thehotel industry and the medical tourism also shows major foreign interest’. CyprusMail, Set 5, 2014

The real estate sector is thriving mainly driven by incentive schemes relating topermanent residency and citizenship incentive scheme, showing 23% rise over thelast seven months.

Another milestone was achieved in the Cyprus banking sector. The Eurozone‘stresstests’, by the Europeans banking regulators, showed large degree of capitaladequacy in the local banks.

The Cyprus Bank, (the bank at the centre of the banking collapse), through strategicmanagement andrestructuring stagedpreemptiverecapitalization drivethrough share capitalincrease. The move was wellreceived by themarkets netting thebank €81millionsurplus!

The Standard & Poors rating agency upgrade to B+ is a “.. good cause to face thefuture with optimism” , according to the Cyprus Central Bank Governor. TheMirror, 29 Oct, 2014

Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency, is also well pleased with the internationalinvestments and the opportunities presented by the extraction of the natural gasreserves off the coast of Cyprus. “ As such, the country appears destined to play avital and strategic role as the energy hub “. Financial Mirror, Sept 11.

Cyprus odyssey to national recovery has been difficult but the latest news has beenvery positive on almost all fronts. The non performing loans are a thorny issue stillremaining, as painful as it is, we all know that the issue can not remain unresolved.

Government and citizens are focused on full recovery and there is an overwhelmingwill to put our house in order. So, in our case, we indeed ‘plummeted’ but…Cyprus has floated! In my opinion, the county’s mindset is more akin to the fate ofPhoenix, bearing the pain of demise, only to rise again victorious!
