Digipaks are a type of packaging which is used for CD singles or albums. It is used for promotional purposes. It consists of a plastic

tray/case which holds the CD inside, and also a paper booklet which is sometimes incorporated into the ‘case’ which is known as the album

cover. The whole pack is sort of like opening a book. Digipaks were first created by MeadWestvaco who are an American packaging company.

Digipaks replaced bland jewel cases (plain plastic cases) and are often used by major record companies. They allow the case to be more

intriguing and pleasing to look at. Record companies would want a digipak to stand out because it’s made to be sold to attract audiences.

Who benefits from digipaks?Audience benefit from digipaks because:-Damage to the disk is not likely.-Customers might find it has sentimental value for example if they met the artist in person or even if they attended one of their concerts.-For concerns regarding environment, there isn’t any because the paper is economically because it’s most likely produced from recycled paper.

Industry/Company benefit from digipaks because: -Their consideration for being economically friendly makes the company itself look good. -Largely advertised for their own benefits as it’s a promotional opportunity for them and they can make lots of money from it.
