CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Venue: M2, 23
rd floor
According to Edelman’s 2012 “goodpurpose” study, only 28% of consumers globally believe businesses are performing well in addressing societal issues, while 87% of those consumers believe businesses should place at least equal weight on societal issues and business issues. What’s more, the study found that 80% of people reported “they would be more likely to purchase a product from a company that supports good causes and has fair prices than a company that simply offers discounts.”
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is no longer just a marketing catch phrase; it is has become an integral factor in how businesses operate. It is no secret that businesses that actively consider the welfare of its people, community, and environment fare better in the long haul. CSR in the visitor economy is especially necessary when we consider why people travel, and why they continue to return to the places they do.
Collectively, we are responsible for ensuring that the very reason we travel does not disappear. Sustainable tourism and its neutral or positive impact on local culture, resources, and economy as it falls under the umbrella of corporate social responsibility, are instrumental in the future of tourism.
This session will provide insight about CSR and its potential impacts on both the way we do business and the way we lead our lives. After examining good practices throughout various sectors in the visitor economy, session attendees will have the chance to engage in an interactive dialogue and question and answer period with the speakers, which will facilitate discussion on how PATA and its members can tackle key CSR issues.

1400-1530 FACILITATING AND BALANCING SAFETY & SECURITY Venue: M4, 23
rd floor
Safety and security have always been indispensable conditions for travel and tourism, but it is an incontestable fact that safety and security issues are gaining importance in the Complete Visitor Economy philosophy. This interactive session will involve the participants in discussions about : How do safety problems influence the tourists while choosing their destination? What are the key elements in the notion “tourism safety and security”? What are the main safety and security issues influencing the Complete Visitors Economy? What solutions are needed and how can PATA support the activation and implementation? What are the responsibilities of the stakeholders – including tourists – in reducing these menaces? Safety and security is now a priority in the Complete Visitor Economy and decisive actions will be needed to protect tangible and intangible assets of suppliers, buyers as well as consumers by facilitating & balancing safety and security!

1400-1530 HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT Venue: M3, 23
rd floor
Tourism is recognized as a complicated multi-sector activity of a country’s service industry and achieving coordination among the stakeholders, including government ministries and agencies, private sector enterprises, industry associations and civil society is a major challenge to successful destination management.
Human capital development (HCD) for tourism destinations can been defined as the whole system of human interaction in the tourism experience with the objective of elevating the quality of tourism-related services resulting in enhanced benefits for all stakeholders. Effective tourism destination HCD is also understood to be a source of competitive advantage, especially for developing economies. Unfortunately, the human element of the visitor economy is often neglected, particularly at the destination level where HCD is often relegated behind infrastructure, marketing, transportation and other tourism development priorities.
This session will bring together academia, industry and destination planners in order to discuss how improved partnerships among stakeholders can help develop a destination's service quality thereby improving the overall contribution of the visitor economy.

1400-1530 MEDICAL TOURISM INTEGRATION TO THE COMPLETE VISITOR ECONOMY Venue: M1, 23
rd floor
The tourism industry is constantly evolving, creating new ways of expanding its business reach. With the emergence of niche tourism products, the industry is no longer limited by the traditional definition of tourism as in travel for recreational or leisure purposes. Nowadays, people travel far and wide for various pursuits – adventure, culinary, cultural, religious, and many more.
Medical tourism is among the noteworthy specialty travel forms of tourism that have emerged over the years. Travelers seek medical services that range from cosmetic surgery and elective procedures to more complex specialized operations in countries such as Argentina, Brunei, Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Jordan, Lithuania, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, and recently, Saudi Arabia, UAE, South Korea, Tunisia, Ukraine, and New Zealand.
Thailand has been in the forefront in the list of medical tourism destinations. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has reported that Thailand has a 38% stake in the world’s medical tourism market, making it the leading medical tourism destination worldwide, attracting an estimated 1.8 million foreign visitors seeking medical treatment in 2010.
In this session, representatives from Thailand’s leading healthcare providers, tour operators who bring in patients, as well as representatives from major medical tourism source markets will share valuable insight into why Thailand is considered a success in leading the medical tourism market.
