This catalogue showcases the work of graduates in Digital Media Arts at London South Bank University. The course aims to address the hybridity of media arts practice while encouraging the students to develop a playful and innovative approach to the moving image, photography and interactive media. The diversity of work in the exhibition reflects this experimentation and exposure to many different trajectories and techniques across the field.

What is evident in their work is the dedication and creative energy to pursue and resolve a practical project which is significant and meaningful to them. The animations, images and interactions you encounter in the show reflects the diversity of our students and their concerns: from war, memory and representation to consumption and the post-human. Their work plays with the language of the digital image or interface, and through the development of their own visual language seeks to critique media representation.

The exhibition marks the moment in time as the students of 2010 prepare to exit the course as media professionals. We wish them the best of luck in pursuing their creative goals and look forward to seeing their work develop over the coming years.

“Light creates shadow and shadow in return” but what if there was no light?

Lights Out is a series of photographs taken in the suburban areas of London, where all forms and sources of light have been removed in order to create a still image that conveys emotion and the significance of a particular moment. Light is the most important element within night photography, so why not eliminate light and play with the conventions and pre-conceptions of night photography?

The night transforms our notion from the norm to the mysteriously unknowing. Welcome to my vision.

We have entered the era of the posthuman. We live in a time when digital media tools create glamorous but fake, artificial representations of ‘the ideal’. Hence, ideas of the ‘ideal woman’, ‘ideal man’ or ‘ideal lifestyle’ are becoming more and more false, distancing us from the real and natural.

This phenomenon is paired with such developments in science that it became possible to realize those representations in real life. Chemical, surgical or genetic interventions are becoming a fashion, a ‘must’ if someone wants to succeed or feel satisfied.

Through a series of staged self portraits I aimed to investigate what we become when we follow these ideals and try to achieve them with all the available means. It is about the question of identity, the shifting relation between reality and representation, and power related issues.

“The scale of war’s murderousness destroys what identifies people as individuals, even human beings.”

With images of violence and death being commonplace and readily available intoday’s information-rich society, Mnemonic explores the vicarious relationship between modern society and images of mass death. Mnemonic looks at how war removes individuality, turning humans into faceless entities to make such events easier to comprehend and ultimately, guilt-free and erasable.

This piece of work explores the story of my time in education and the struggles which I went through to get to where I am today and the hope and dream I had as a young teenager. I hope this documentary inspires people to always do your best even when things are not going well and that you should never give up on education or learning as it can be very rewarding; believe in your own ability.

Tapping into and visualizing the collective consciousness of the online world, Interference uses sound, interactivity and typography to provide an insight and an interface to human emotion.

Due to the anonymity of the Internet and the increasing popularity of social net-works there is now a constant outpouring of private thoughts on the net. My work looks at how this information can be turned into art.

Channel 8 News is a comedy news sketch show inspired by the relentless stream of 24 hour news media. Using fictional cast and stories, I aim to entertain the audience and look at the lighter side to the disturbing news of today.

“...it is necessary that the viewers look and not read. Then the picture (which is made out of words) is a pipe. But as soon as the viewer becomes a reader, then the picture is no longer a pipe but a sentence.” Bohn, 1914

In this interactive work, scanned text was used and manipulated to create a new perspective when looking at text. The aim was to create images using nothing but the manipulation of text, By allowing the user to interact with the work more images were formed by the user than initially intended, making it appear as an interactive painting. This project was heavily inspired by ‘calligrams’, where words are formed into images, creating a playful way of reading text.

This work gives the viewer insight into the subjects’ personal lives by Investigating the properties of their shoes. The type of footwear completely depends on the person who is wearing it; theefore it becomes a reflection of his perception of himself thus personal identity.

In this series of photographs people are randomly selected from the street. After having their photo taken they are asked to write how they relate with their shoes and what are their feelings for them. By doing that, the goal is to show that what we choose to wear is how we want to present our selves.

The resulting images convey that fashion is a way of standing out from the crowd. It represents interests and beliefs. Each item you wear is a decision you made.

Martial Arts is a journey with no end. Video transforms life: how a body(another) sees it. Our mind sometimes forgets as there is a transformation from the ordinary normal working person, in society, to the martial artist: a warrior who in one hand has control and in the other hand has natural instincts. Using video I try to capture events and techniques learnt along my personal journey.
