Are you licking your lips? Are you rubbing those hands together? Are you counting down the days until the London Olympics get under way? If not, what’s holding you back? There isn’t going to be a hotter place at the 2012 Games than the aquatics venue. That much was proven during eight splendid days of action at the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.
Ryan Lochte, with four individual gold medals plus a gold and bronze in relays, left the Oriental Sports Center’s Indoor Stadium as the current No. 1—hardly an easy feat, considering the legacy and greatness of Phelps.

The Baylor School (Tenn.) has been the best girls independent school two of the last three years, including an overall national championship in 2009. Carmel High School (Ind.) has dominated the public school scene for three years straight. It’s only fitting, then, that these two powerhouses tied for first in Swimming World’s Girls’ National High School Championship for 2011.
It’s only the second time since Swimming World began crowning a national high school champion in the early 1970s (boys, 1971; girls, 1976) that two schools have tied as the top team.

The FINA World Long Course Championships produced a pair of world records and plenty of other storylines to keep our readers coming back for more. Meanwhile, a controversial nish in the men’s 50 breaststroke nal lit our site on re with massive amounts of activity.
Ryan Lochte became the rst swimmer to break a long course world record in the post-techsuit era when he took down the men’s 200 IM global standard during nals. Lochte turned in a 1:54.00 to clip his previous record of 1:54.10, and used a strong nal 50 meters of 27.49 to set the record.
With most of the swimming community focused on the FINA World Long Course Championships, sometimes other important storylines are overshadowed. That was not the case for Justin Lynch, who broke a U.S. national age group record for 13-14-year-olds previously held by Michael Phelps since 2000. Lynch broke the 100 y mark with a 54.80, under Phelps’ 55.78.
Mark Schubert, former U.S. national team head coach, resurfaced from a breakup with USA Swimming to take over as head coach of Golden West College, a junior college in Southern California. With his impressive credentials, Golden West might just give Indian River State College a run for its money in the NJCAA ranks.

For most of his career, Ryan Lochte has been swimming in the shadow of Michael Phelps. In 2010, Lochte began overtaking Phelps with a successful Pan Paci c Championships that led to his rst Swimming World World Swimmer of the Year award. But many felt Phelps had not given last year any serious thought. At the 2011 FINA World Championships, Lochte outperformed Phelps, and looked to push Phelps o the mountaintop as the world’s best swimmer.

When SwimmingWorld.com broke news that Brazil’s Felipe Silva won his men’s 50 breast world title with an illegal dolphin kick, the swimming community reacted to the article in droves. Some readers suggested Swimming World had an anti-Brazil bias, while others said it was ful lling its journalistic duty to point out such infractions.

China’s Sun Yang used an incredible nal 50-meter sprint to overtake the world record in the men’s 1500 free at Worlds. The longest standing world record on the books, Grant Hacke ’s 14:34.56 had stood since the 2001 World Championships. Sun, however, charted a time of 14:34.14 that included a 25.94 for the nal 50 meters.

Performance of the Week
It should come to no surprise that Ryan Lochte and
Sun Yang won Performance of the Week honors. Lochte posted
the first long course world record in 19 months with his
1:54.00 in the 200 meter individual medley, beating
out Michael Phelps by a finger length and setting up
a great battle at the London Olympics. Sun took
down a 10-year-old mark in the 1500 freestyle with a
14:34.14, erasing Grant Hackett’s legendary swim by
just a few tenths. Sun swam more than two seconds
off the record pace until the final 100 meters, but
posted a 54-second final 100 to break the record.

What should FINA do regarding the 15-meter underwater rule?
Make it shorter.
Make it longer.
