The work involved in an architecture project is often viewed as having a singular design goal... the construction of a building.
However, the workflow of any project has multiple milestones and deliverables, and as such is in fact a number of different but interconnected design projects.

Design Process + Output
The work involved in an architecture project is often viewed as having a singular design goal... the construction of a building.
However, the workflow of any project has multiple milestones and deliverables, and as such is in fact a number of different but interconnected design projects.
Over the course of any project there will be a number of presentations, discussions, meetings, and collaborations that are essential to acheiving the final goal. For each different type of meeting, different documentation and media are required. Each presentation is a design in itself - the strategy used to demonstrate the work, and the media shown to the audience specifically set the tone, and reflect on the quality and credibility of the work and team.

The Digital Chain augments these issues to a higher level. With the internet, e-mail, and “globalization” it is becomming more and more typical that collaboration and even meetings are not attended “in person”. This places even more emphasis on creating output that is clear, precise, and strategically alligned with the message that you need to communicate.

Architecture is specifically focused on graphics and visuals as media.
However visuals are not only used to denote the appearance of a project, but can also be used for analysis and evaluation.
DTS: Visualization
Rudementary “massing” models are used to visualize and evaluate relations at the urban and building scale

Highly detailed rendered models are used to denote intentions for detail, materiality, fittings, and other “human scale” qualities.
The images and the amount of data contained within should be strategically defined, so as to ensure that the intended message is communicated.

Rendering, and “photoshopping” are now typical output methods for visualization and representation. Most CAAD and modelling software have a rudementary built in rendering engine, however for more realistic, precise, and controllable rendering external (or plug-in) software is used.

Free rendering applications- Yafray- Povray
.... and many MANY others.

DTS: Visualization
Optimation for visualization.
When considering rendered output (either static or animated) it is important to understand the issues of optimizaiton.
The calculation of 3D geometry is very processor demanding. The rendering of images is handled (typically) by the graphics processor.
Texture mapping is the process of appyling an image onto a surface. By using images at a reasonable resolution one can dramatically reduce rendering time, while dramatically increasing the visual information in a scene. (Is this always desirable?)
Visualization
Additional information on 3D optimization and texture mapping can be found on the sketchup and google earth tutorials.
