(Writing) Big Ideas/Unit Goals: The goals for this unit are for the students to understand the words and phrases in nutrition, to understand correct meal choices and how to plan their own meals by choosing the right kinds of foods, to practice reading the food pyramid and understand portion sizes, to analyze articles on nutrition to gain new insight on this topic, and for students to understand nutrition well enough that they can apply the information they learned for the rest of their lives. Unit Summary: The nutrition unit gets the students understanding the importance of evaluating what they eat all of the time so that they know they are making the best choice for their body. Students will be able to understand specific nutrition terms and concepts through reading articles and be able to apply the concepts through structured writing. They will understand key nutrients that are crucial to the body. Students will also create an iPad lesson that will help students understand nutrients and how to apply the nutrients to their diet. Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

The goals for this unit are for the students to understand the words and phrases in nutrition, to understand correct meal choices and how to plan their own meals by choosing the right kinds of foods, to practice reading the food pyramid and understand portion sizes, to analyze articles on nutrition to gain new insight on this topic, and for students to understand nutrition well enough that they can apply the information they learned for the rest of their lives.

Unit Summary:

Students will be able to understand specific nutrition terms and concepts through reading articles and be able to apply the concepts through structured writing. They will understand key nutrients that are crucial to the body. Students will also create an iPad lesson that will help students understand nutrients and how to apply the nutrients to their diet. The students comprehend an article about the food pyramid and gain new insight to understand the correct serving amounts the students are choosing what to eat. Through activities, students can determine if what they are about to eat is either good for them or not, which will help eliminate certain foods from their diets by just knowing basic nutrition. All of the activities are meant to give the student in-depth knowledge on nutrition and give them tools to plan and determine what they should be ingesting on their own.

Lesson 1

Student Learning Objective:

Students will be able to identify, analyze, evaluate and apply concepts of key nutrients to eating healthy.

Acceptable Evidence (Assessments):

Students will take a survey on nutrition.

Students will write a quick write on their previous knowledge of nutrition.

The students will rank words and phrases in importance.

Lesson Activities:- Students will take a survey on nutrition.- Students will write a quick write their previous knowledge on nutrition.- The students will first listen/watch a PowerPoint lecture on the basics of nutrition and its importance to apply the information in their lives.- The teacher will do a read aloud with the article on nutrition. The students will have a copy of the article in front of them where they will follow along.- There will then be a class discussion on the important ideas and terms from the article.- The students will then get in pairs and write a list down of the most influential words/phrases to them and rank them from 1-10 (1 being the least important).

Lesson 2

Student Learning Objective:

Students will be able to recognize key nutrients in a variety of different food items.

Acceptable Evidence:

Students will have to answer questions in a quiz format on key nutrients.

Students have to create an iPad collage of key nutrients in foods.

Nutrition Poster Project

Lesson Activities:-Lecture on key nutrients. The lecture is to be shorter than the previous lesson. The lecture will cover some information from the last class as well as types of food that nutrients are found in.- Next, the students will take a nutrition quiz to check for understanding.- Students will then find a partner and discuss each other’s answers and if a question was answered wrong, the students must work together to try to find a solution.- The last activity is to explain the iPad lesson. The teacher shows the students a couple example of the work he expects them to do- Explain the project and discuss the rubric.

Lesson 3

Student Learning Objective:

Students will be able to identify and apply portion sizes to their personal diet.

Acceptable Evidence:

Students will create a KWL chart that will assess their understanding of the readings and the concepts discussed in the lesson.

Students will answer critical thinking questions written on the board.

Students will write a summative essay to show their knowledge of nutrition.

Lesson Activities: - First, students will read article on the food pyramid where they will learn about portion sizes and how many fruits and vegetables they should have a day. This will help to guide students in the right direction about what they should plan to eat for meals.- Students will fill out a KWL chart before and after reading the article.- Lecture on nutrition planning, the teacher gives a PowerPoint presentation about examples of a meal plan that includes what and how much is in the plan. The lecture also describes serving sizes, how to portion foods, and counting calories.- Lastly, students will be using calorie counters on the computers/phones to determine their calorie intakes with their daily routines, so they know how many calories they can ingest through out the day.- Prompt for the short essay is given. Students have 20 minutes to complete it.
