Order of presentation
From a library perspective, this project provides the opportunityto examine & test new ways to curate scholarly digital content
Agenda
•Motivation – learning to curate to meet scholar expectations
•Digitization workflows; a mix of generic & custom
•Transcription, metadata, & other post-digitization workflows
•Portal design – principles & implementation (preliminary)
•Looking forward

Meeting scholar expectations
• Multiple access routes– More than just the library online catalog– Collection can be entered at any point
• Support for multiple granularity of resources– Book, emblem, pictura, ...
• Sustainable links – Persistent URLs for book, emblem, pictura, ...– Can be referenced even at sub-object level
• Links to vocabularies, increasingly as linked data – Iconclass– LCSH

Sustainable links
• Persistent identifiers using recognized standards– CNRI Handles, PURLs, DOIs, ARK, ....– Content can be moved, but URIs remain the same
• Use tools that support scholarly citation– W3C Media Fragments, OpenURL (djatoka), Momento– Scholars need to be able to cite segments of a resource– Repositories must version and archive

How do we get there?
• Leverage generic workflows for digitization – Create range of standard, useful derivatives
• Augment with content-specific post processing– Additional metadata & description– Additional derivatives tailored to prime audience
• Specialized portal tailored to target audience

Linked data and vocabularies
• Web has always been about relationships between & among information resources
• Linked data rules:– Use URIs as names for things
– Use HTTP URIs so that names can be de-referenced
– Provide useful information when names de-referenced
– Include links to other things so they can be discovered
Goal: Build applications that discover relationships

Linking through controlled vocabularies
“Iconclass is a classification system designed for art and iconography.”
Attributes: hierarchical notation reflects hierarchy both labels & keywords
Using iconclass heading assigned to an emblem as an anchor to connect to other emblems with same or related headings

Book Information –
Derived from library catalog records
Creating Emblematica Online Portal
• Providing integrated search / browse portal for digitized emblem resources– Different levels of access points– Leverage mixed granularity of images & metadata – Leverage sustainable links, linked data opportunities
offered by book & emblem registry, topic ontologies– Anchor to the original repositories
Must be a collaboration between users & libraries
