Species name

• Example: Betula pendula

• Write epithet always in small letter (even if it’s big letter in label)

• Write name from the newest label!• Examples: Betula pendula Roth / Poa annua L. – Roth and L.: names of the fathers of the species -> do not

write Roth or L.

Genus Specific epithet

An example of the label

Commelinaceae?Family name, do not writeUsually family: -aceae or -ae

If first name is entirely written, write full name: for e.g. Bjørnstad, Inger

Plant name, more than 2 words

Examples• Vaccinium vitis-idaea

‒ Vaccinium = genus, vitis-idaea = specific epithet

• Brassica rapa ssp. rapa‒ ssp = subspecies -> do not write ssp. rapa‒ ssp. = subsp.

• Betula pendula var. carelica‒ var. = variety -> do not write var. carelica

• Betula pendula f. bircalensis• f. = forma -> do not write f. bircalensis

Plant name, ?• Salix glauca × myrsinifolia‒ Crossing between 2 species (S. glauca and S. myrsinifolia)

• Tilia × vulgaris– Crossing, own name (no fathers and mothers mentioned)

• You can use x instead of ו Cucumis sativus ’Market More’‒ ’Market More’ is a commercial name –> do not write

• Poa sp./indet./alien/ignota = epithet not known, leave empty
