POPE PAUL VI

he continued theSecond Vatican Councilwhich he closed in 1965, implementing its numerous reforms, and fostered improved ecumenical relations withEastern OrthodoxandProtestants

DIGNTATIS HUMANAEto develop the doctrine of recent popes on the inviolable rights of the human person and the constitutional order of societySpells out the Church's support for the protection of religious libertyThe human person has a right to religious freedom and no one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefs, whether privately or publicly

DIGNITATIS HUMANAEIt is essentially a declaration of religious freedom, a freedom which must also be permitted by states. The church must be allowed to work freely, butcompulsion or force must play no part in a persons response to God.

DIGNITATIS HUMANAEWas quickly recognized as one of the foundations of the relations of the Church to the world, and was particularly helpful in relationships with other faith communities: it was a key part of establishing the churchs credibility in ecumenical actions
