    Williams (Mass.) Takes Over Lead in the Final WinterDivision III Learfield Sports Directors Cup Standings;

    NESCAC Places Three Institutions in the Top Five

    CLEVELAND Williams (Mass.) has taken over the lead in the final winter Division III Learfield SportsDirectors Cup Standings with 719.50 points. The Ephs recorded a winter-high 483.50 points, withfinishes of third in both mens basketball and womens swimming & diving, fourth in mens swimming &diving, 14th in skiing and 33rd in womens basketball coming in the most recent championships.

    Middlebury (Vt.) has jumped from sixth place to second after placing third in both mens basketball andwomens ice hockey, ninth in skiing and 10th in mens swimming & diving. The Panthers have 664 totalpoints.

    In third place with 649.50 points is Washington University (Mo.). The Bears turned in a second placeresult in womens basketball, as well as additional finishes of 16 th in mens swimming & diving and 24thin womens swimming & diving.

    Calvin (Mich.) sits in fourth place with 599.75 points. The Knights added to their point total afterplacing 17th in womens basketball, 25th in mens swimming & diving and 34th in womens swimming &diving.

    Moving into the top five is Amherst (Mass.) with 587 points. The Lord Jeffs captured the womensbasketball national championship and also placed fifth in mens basketball, sixth in mens swimming &diving and ninth in womens swimming & diving.

    The New England Small College Athletic Conference is leading the way with three of its institutionscurrently in the top five. Following current leader Williams (Mass.) is Middlebury (Vt.) in second andAmherst (Mass.) in fifth.

    All nine winter NCAA championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles:mens indoor track & field North Central (Ill.); womens indoor track & field Wisconsin Oshkosh;

    wrestling Wartburg (Iowa); mens basketball St. Thomas (Minn.); womens basketball Amherst(Mass.); mens swimming & diving Denison (Ohio); womens swimming & diving Emory (Ga.); mensice hockey St. Norbert (Wis.); womens ice hockey Norwich (Vt.).

    The Learfield Sports Directors Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association ofCollegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on eachinstitution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine womens and nine mens.

    The first Division III spring standings will be released Thursday, May 27, 2011.
