Manufacturing process for Robert Welch knives and forks

Robert Welch knivesThe stainless steel used formaking a knife is 430/13%chrome steel. This is usedbecause the steel needs to be very hard to maintain a cutting edge. A single pieceis heated to soften the steel for hot forging. Firstly,the handle is forged in anindividual tool, to form thebasic shape. The bar is thenturned and a rolling machine

is used to roll the bladeshape. The piece is thenclipped to separate the knifefrom the excess steel. Nextthe knife is heat treated to the desired hardness by tempering. The blade is CNC ground to form the fine cutting edge andthen hand polished. Finally, a serration is applied to the under side of the blade and re-polished.

Robert Welch forksRW forks are made from18/10 304 stainless steel. This is an alloy of iron andcarbon with 18% chrome for corrosion resistance and10% nickel for brightness andmalleability. These pieces areforged in a different way,utilising cold forge methods.Each piece will require up tosix separate tools (blanking,clipping, tining, bowl forming

and handle coning). Each is a gradual process offorming the detailed shaperequired.When the piece has the correct shape and exact form it is handground and polished.

DesignA cutlery range can take up to a year or more to design,develop and produce. RobertWelch cutlery patterns aredesigned to be modernclassics which will not date.

BalanceEach piece has been carefullydesigned to ensure correctbalance in the hand. It is alsoessential that the cutlery is not handle heavy, as this couldcause tipping off the platewhen the pieces are resting.

Cutting edgeWe manufacture our knivesfrom Martensitic stainless steel for extra hardness and to maintain a superbblade edge.

Cutting actionKnives are carefully designed and developed to maximise the cuttingaction for ease of use.

GripTo ensure that the cutlerydoes not spin in the hand, we have added width to the bolster area for the finger to rest on. Roundedcomfortable handles also feel good in the hand.

Hand finishedEach piece is individually hand polished to achieve an exquisite finish.

Care of Cutlery

Hand washing is always best! Use a soft cloth or brush to reallylook after your cutlery. NEVER usescourers or wire wool as this willcause irreparable damage!

If dishwashing, always rinse cutlerypieces prior to loading. Prolongedcontact with foodstuff, especiallydeposits with high salt or acidcontent (such as table sauces or citrus fruits) will leave rainbowmarks or pitting.

Ensure water softener and rinse aids are always topped up to avoidchalky residue or detergent marks on the cutlery.

Once the dishwashing cycle hasfinished remove immediately and drywith a cloth eliminating water marks.

If marks do appear, gently polish with a proprietory cream stainlesssteel cleaner.

Remember – stainless steel is notstain proof… it STAINS LESS!
