Edwardsville...Edwardsville could have taken its
name from any of the four governors that once called it home, but opted
for Ninian Edwards as its namesake. The third-oldest city in Illinois,
Edwardsville serves as the seat of Madison County. The city is also the home of Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville and its sprawling, natured-dedicated campus. Bike trails criss cross the city, which is home to several parks, most
notable of which is Leclaire Park, which features a lake, playground and picnic facilities. Incorporated in 1818, Edwardsville’s population hovers around the 25,000 plateau
and a good many of those residents turn out for the annual Halloween Parade, one of the largest in the St. Louis area. Edwardsville was honored in 2010 by Family Circle
magazine as one of the nation’s Top 10 Best Towns for families. Just to the south of Edwardsville lies Glen Carbon, with a population of more than 13,000. Once a mining town, Glen Carbon has evolved into a
bedroom community that straddles Interstate 270. Miner Park is one of the community’s top draws. In 2009, CNN/Money magazine rated Glen
Carbon among the 100 best places to live in the country.

The Great River Road......from Alton to Grafton
Alton can make many claims, none bigger than being the home of the
World’s Tallest Man, Robert Wadlow, who stood 8-11.5. A statue of Wadlow and a raised burial plot in the Upper Alton Cemetery are just two of the tributes to the legendary giant. The
city, which is bordered to the west by the Mississippi River, was developed by Rufus Easton in 1818. Alton hosted one of the famous debates between
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, as they battled for a Congressional
seat in 1858. The city also has ties to the Civil War, including the remains of a prison that held Rebel soldiers and a cemetery where many Confederate
dead are buried. Further, Alton is considered to be one of the nation’s most haunted cities and sites like the Mineral Springs Hotel and the McPike
Mansion draw thrill seekers from across the globe. With a population of more
than 26,000, Alton’s once mighty-industrial corridor has been replaced by antique shops and the Alton Belle
Casino. The city is dotted by numerous parks including: Gordon Moore Park,
with an 18-hole golf course; Rock Spring Park, with a nine-hole golf
course; Haskell Park; Riverfront Park and Riverview Park.

Maryville...Maryville enjoys a unique location as it is sandwiched between Interstate 270 and Interstate 55/70. The village is home to
Madison County’s only hospital, Anderson Hospital, which sprang from the ground
up 35 years ago. Maryville is also home to Drost Park, which features a well-stocked
fishing lake and plenty of recreational opportunities as it is surrounded by paved bike paths. The village, with a population of more than 5,000, has an active Park and Recreation Committee that plans
events throughout the year. Incorporated in 1902, Maryville has produced a number of major league baseball players including
former Cardinal Ken Oberkfell.
