Current Chamber President Tim Buckles thanked
everyone for attending.
The Greater Manlius Chamber of Commerce Eleventh Annual
With over 180 Chamber members and guests attending and over 160 silent and live auctions to bid on the 2012 Spring Dinner Auction was a huge success! While the final numbers aren’t in yet the Committee Chairs, Kim Kutzer, Marcia Philipp, and Cheryl Schotz, are confident that we exceeded last year’s numbers on a grand scale! Half of this year’s pro-ceeds will be shared with the FM Community Outreach in Manlius and Heaven’s Pantry in Minoa. In addition to that the food items in the lovely centerpieces, as well as monetary donations received that night will be given to the pantries. To all that attended thank you for your support - to those that were not able to mark your calendars for the 2013 Spring Dinner.
A special thank you to all who attended
this year’s event Fighting Hunger . . .
Feeding Hope!!
Master of Ceremonies (and Past President) Mike Skeele welcomed guests and kicked off the evenings festivities.

PRESIDENT’S NOTES . . .
MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Finishing up April and going into May I am seeing several trends I would like to share with all of you. Business Environment – I’m seeing the economy coming back in many ways…some of you may see the stock mar-ket, others see business reports…but from my perspec-tive…here is what I see locally that is very encouraging to me… Contractors, senior executives, and business owners are out buying again…Real Estate is picking up and we are beginning to see bidding wars…Banking is looking for ways to start moving capital again…even within our chamber we are seeing strong growth in our membership and business community. All of these signs point to a strong year ahead!!! With that said, I would like to point out some programs/events you should be aware of… Business After Hours – Our last one we held at Empower was a great success…we had over 50 people attend and was a great opportunity to network and get to know our membership. If you have not been to one of these…I would highly recommend. Lunch & Learns – this is a great venue for resourcing your business…large or small. Our goal is to get you infor-mation and contacts to help support, service, and finance your business needs. Our second one this year will be "What You Don’t Know About Marketing Could Hurt Your Business!” presented by the president of SCORE.
So come learn about Marketing and more about how SCORE can be a resource and more importantly a thought partner in your business concept/model. Our Spring Dinner Auction will be our biggest turnout ever in the years I’ve been a member…looking at the ini-tial numbers of people and businesses that have signed up we are looking forward to a great turn out. This is a great way to support the food panties that are in dire need and once again meet businesses and members of our communi-ty. In addition, we are leveraging technology more than ev-er…check out our Website at www.Manliuschamber.com or go check out our facebook site to see some of our most current events coming up!!! Please do not hesitate to email me with questions or con-cerns…[email protected]. This is your chamber and we work for each and every one of you to make this another great year! On behalf of the Greater Manlius Chamber of Commerce membership and your Board of Directors…thank you for your support and participation! …..And remember to Shop Locally!!! Tim Buckles (The Wine House) 2012 President

Enjoy a delicious lunch & learn the latest tips and trends in marketing! Marketing is a multi-faceted, many dimensional animal - and anyone contemplating any type of marketing needs to define certain things up front. Who is your target audience? What is the income of your target audience? Can they afford your product or service? Where does you target audience live and what is the best way to reach them? What is my competition doing as far as marketing their wares? Marketing starts at word-of-mouth and can broaden to TV advertising and social media; e.g., Facebook, Linked In. What can I afford to spend on advertising? Is there any way to gauge results and evaluate success if I do make the investment? Each type of business is different in its needs and marketing needs to be tailored to the specific nature of the business..... You will learn to apply all of these to your business and more! What is SCORE? SCORE, “Counselors to America’s Small Business” is the premier, free business counseling and advice ser-vice found in the United States. For more than 40 years, SCORE’s retired and working business professionals have volunteered to help a new generation of entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses.

Business relationships are usu-ally straightforward. You pro-vide a product or service, and the customer pays you for it in a timely manner. But every small business owner will like-ly have to deal with tardy or missed payments. Don’t ignore them or assume the customer will eventually follow through. Money owed to your busi-ness—known as receivables—
cuts into your profits and complicates your cash flow. A good collections strategy can help prevent slow payments before they become a problem, and ensure that income from aged invoices isn’t lost forever. Your aim is to create a step-by-step collections process that starts by making smart credit-granting decisions. And make no mistake: granting credit is exactly what your business is doing whenever you deliver a product or service without first collecting payment. Customers are more likely to pay quickly if your invoice arrives in a timely fashion and is clear and simple. It should state explicitly, in itemized fashion, what it covers. Make it look clean and professional, and include your company logo. Cute designs may only get in the way. Design it like a real invoice, not just a piece of paper with “amount due” typed in, and be sure it is clear how the check should be made out and where it should be sent. Including a return envelope can help. Also include a phone number and contact name for questions. Small business accounting pro-grams such as QuickBooks can easily create your invoices. Or, consider a dedicated low-cost software package such as
MyInvoices & Estimates for $39.95 from Avanquest (www.avanquestusa.com). Mail your invoices quickly and send a reminder immediately if payment is not received by the stated due date. On long-term projects, consider progress billings. If you do need to press for collections, don’t use threats or emotional appeals. Phone calls are more effective than let-ters or emails, according to collections experts, so contact your customer directly and/or the business’s accounting de-partment. Be polite, yet firm in asking for immediate and full payment. If a letter is necessary, it should be personal-ized and sent by registered mail so that you can verify its receipt should legal action be necessary. Collections are just one critical financial issue your small business can face. For expert help and advice, contact SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business." SCORE is a nonprofit organization of more than 10,500 volunteer business counselors who provide free, confidential business counseling and training workshops to small business owners. Call 1-800/634-0245 for the SCORE chapter nearest you, or find a counselor online at www.score.org.
