Omnivores eat both meat and plants. Sort the food below into herbivores and carnivores by circling them.

Use a green pencil for herbivores and a red pencil for carnivores.

LESSON FIVE: How do we know so much about dinosaurs?

Retrieval Practice

1. What is a person called that studies dinosaurs?

__________________________________________________

2. What was the large land called that dinosaurs lived on? Tick the correct

answer.

Key words:

skeleton fossils palaeontologist

decompose rock soil bones

After a dinosaur dies, the soft parts of the body decompose,

that means it disappears. It leaves the hard parts behind like

the skeleton. Over time, the bones are buried by small pieces

of rock and soil. The water in the ground slowly dissolves the

bones, and chemicals in the water leave a copy of the bones

made of rock. This is called a fossil.

5. Using your knowledge of dinosaurs, what

dinosaur do you think this could be?

__________________________

6. What is the process for a palaeontologist to study a fossil?

Number these from 1-5 to show the order that they occur in.

7. Draw a line from the dinosaur to its correct fossil. Can you write the name

of the dinosaur on the red line?

Next, identify what type of dinosaur you have found. Look for clues like the size

of the teeth and the size of the bones.

First, you need to know your location by using a map or compass to find where

a fossil might be.

1

Then, when you have found the location of the fossil, use tools like brushes and

shovels to find the fossil in the ground.

If you are still unsure what dinosaur you have found, look at the environment

the dinosaur was alive in.

Lastly, look deeper at the fossil, use scientist machines to look at the bones.

LESSON SIX: How did the dinosaurs become extinct?

Retrieval Practice

1. What is a fossil made out of? Circle the correct answer.

Rock Clay Ice

2. What hard parts of a dinosaur are left behind when it dies?

3. A Tyrannosaurus Rex was at the top of the food

chain.

Is this correct? Circle your answer.

2. Look at each picture carefully. Can you name 3 challenges which led to

the dinosaurs becoming extinct?

One has been done for you.

1. The carnivores ate all of the herbivore dinosaurs so the

food ran out.
