Although it is difficult to be certain about these things, it is believed that the first beetles appeared about 300 million years ago, at the start of the Permian period.

When he described it Marsh likened the plates on its back to the shingles on the roof of a house, thus giving rise to the terms ‘roofed lizard’ and ‘roofed reptile’.
