Ra i sed to Serve by Scott Hahn, Ph.D. In today’s First Reading, Job describes the futility of life before Christ. His lament reminds us of the curse of toil and death placed upon Adam following his origi-nal sin (see Genesis 3:17–19). Men and women are like slaves seeking shade, unable to find rest. Their lives are like the wind that comes and goes. But, as we sing in today’s Psalm, He who created the stars promised to heal the

F rom the Great Fathers From a commentary on St. Paul by St. Augustine
LET US UNDERSTAND THE WORKNGS OF GOD’S GRACE Paul writes to the Galatians to make them understand that by God’s grace they are no longer under the law. When the Gospel was preached to them, there were some among them of Jewish origin known as circumcisers – though they called themselves Christians – who did not grasp the gift they had received. They still wanted to be under the burden of the law. Now God had imposed that burden on those who were slaves to sin and not on servants of justice. That is to say, God had given a just law to unjust men in order to show them their sin, not to take it away. For sin is taken away only by the gift of faith that works through love. The Galatians had already received this gift, but the circumcisers claimed that the Gospel would not save them unless they underwent circumci-sion and were willing to observe also the other traditional Jewish rites. The Galatians, therefore, began to question Paul’s preaching of the Gospel be-cause he did not require Gentiles to follow Jewish observances as other apos-tles had done. Even Peter had yielded to the scandalized protests of the cir-cumcisers. He pretended to believe that the Gospel would not save the Gen-tiles unless they fulfilled the burden of the law. But Paul recalled him from such dissimulation, as is shown in this very same letter. A similar issue arises in Paul’s letter to the Romans, but with an evident difference. Through his letter to them, Paul was able to resolve the strife and controversy that had developed be-tween the Jewish and Gentile converts. In the present letter Paul is writing to persons who were profoundly influenced and disturbed by the circumcisers. The Galatians had begun to believe them and to think that Paul had not preached rightly, since he had not ordered them to be circumcised. And so the Apostle begins by saying: I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting him who called you to the glory of Christ, and turning to another gospel. After this there comes a brief introduction to the point at issue. But remember in the very opening of the letter Paul had said that he was an apostle not from men nor by any man, a statement that does not appear in any other letter of his. He is making it quite clear that the circumcisers, for their part, are not from God but from men, and that his authority in preaching the Gospel must be con-sidered equal to that of the other apostles. For he was called to be an apostle not from men nor by any man, but through God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ.

Diocesan Services Fund - 2018 The Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) helps all of us fulfill Christ’s mission here on earth by supporting those programs and services that cannot be accomplished by one parish alone. More than 60 programs receive all or part of their funding from DSF and all funds are spent within Archdiocesan boundaries. The broad areas of ministry that receive DSF support include: Catholic educa-tion of children and adults; pastoral ministries for the sick, the poor and the incar-cerated; the formation and education of church leadership; social service pro-grams such as San José Clinic, St. Dominic Village and Catholic Charities. No funds are spent on general administrative expenses of the Chancery. A little over 4% of the funds are spent on the DSF appeal expenses. This percentage does not cover staff compensation expenses or supplies which are covered un-der general administrative expenses of the Chancery. DSF benefits your parish in many ways, from training and supporting Archdioce-san priests and deacons, to training pastoral councils and catechists, to support-ing the parish and school system and the many ministries within your parish. If your parish exceeds goal in payments, 50% of those funds over your goal are returned to your parish and 50% goes to the Aid to Poor Parishes Fund. With your gift to DSF you will receive a free subscription to the Texas Catholic Herald to help keep up with the activities and ministries of the Archdiocese and the Church worldwide. For more information, visit the Archdiocesan website at www.archgh.org/dsf and click on the DSF logo or call the Development Department at 713-652-4417.

The Gospels of Mark for the February liturgy bring the messages of Jesus’ healing and the call to faith and repentance as Lent begins on February 14, Valentine’s Day. We know this as the day of love in the secular world. If you are looking for more ways to connect your life with your faith, please join us on Friday evenings from 7:30pm to 9pm in the Prayer Room of the Family Life Center for live music of praise and worship, sharing God’s Word and intercessory prayers for healing and thanksgiving. Fellowship and light refreshments follow. February 9: “If you wish, you can make me clean” February 16: “The Kingdom of God is at hand. Re pent and believe in the Gospel.” February 23: “This is My Beloved Son. Listen to Him.” Discussion topics at our January gatherings are from the Gospels of: Mark 1:29-39, 1:40-45, 1:12-15, 9:2-10

Continued from front page... brokenhearted and gather those lost in exile from Him (see Isaiah 11:12; 61:1). We see this promise fulfilled in today’s Gospel. Simon’s mother-in-law is like Job’s toiling, hopeless hu-manity. She is laid low by affliction but too weak to save herself. But as God promised to take His chosen people by the hand (see Isaiah 42:6), Jesus grasps her by the hand and helps her up. The word translated “help” is actually Greek for raising up. The same verb is used when Jesus commands a dead girl to arise (see Mark 5:41–42). It’s used again to describe His own resurrection (see Mark 14:28; 16:7). What Jesus has done for Simon’s mother-in-law, He has
done for all humanity— raised all of us who lay dead through our sins (see Ephesians 2:5). Notice all the words of totality and completeness in the Gospel. The whole town gathers; all the sick are brought to Him. He drives out demons in the whole of Galilee. Everyone is looking for Christ. We too have found Him. By our baptism, He healed and raised us to live in His presence (see Hosea 6:1–2). Like Simon’s mother-in-law, there is only one way we can thank Him for the new life He has given us. We must rise to serve Him and His gospel. Our lives must be our thanksgiving, as Paul describes in today’s Epistle. We must tell everyone the good news, the purpose for which Jesus has come—that others, too, may have a share in this salvation.

Thanksgiving After Mass St. Thomas Aquinas Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mercy, You have fed me with the Precious Body & Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring mecondemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salvation. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good.
May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impuls-es, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me safely through death to ev-erlasting happiness with You.
And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you, with Your Son and holy Spirit, are true and perfect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. grant this through Christ our Lord, AMEN.

How to go to Confession In order to make a good confession, we examine our conscience, asking God’s help to know our sins and to be truly sorry for them.
R i te of Reconci l iat ion
Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Penitent: Amen. Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. My sins are (confess your sins). When you are done, the priest will give you spiritu-al advice and assign a penance. He will then ask you to pray an Act of Contrition, for example: Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
- or- O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve wit the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. The Priest then says the Prayer of Absolution while the penitent listens. At the conclusion of the pray-er, make the sign of the Cross and say, “Amen.” Priest: Go in peace. Penitent: Thanks be to God.
Complete your penance as soon as possible. If you were giv-en prayers to say, try to pray them in church before departing.
Pasos básicos para confesarse Entra al confesionario sin miedo, confiando en la misericordia de Jesús: Penitente: Ave María Purísima. Sacerdote: Sin pecado concebida. Penitente: Bendígame padre porque he pecado.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church 6646 Addicks-Satsuma Road Houston, Texas 77084-1520
St . Pau l Mik i February 6 Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit and a native of Japan, has become the best known among the martyrs of Japan. While hanging upon a cross, Paul Miki preached to the people gathered for the execution: “The sentence of judgment says these men came to Japan from the Philippines, but I did not come from any other country. I am a true Japanese. The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ. I certainly did teach the doctrine of Christ. I thank God it is for this reason I die. “I believe that I am telling only the truth before I die. I know you believe me and I want to say to you all once again: “Ask Christ to help you to become happy. “I obey Christ. After Christ’s example I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a fruitful rain.” When missionaries returned to Japan in the 1860s, at first they found no trace of Christianity. But after establishing themselves they found that thousands of Chris-tians lived around Nagasaki and that they had secretly preserved the faith. Beatified in 1627, the martyrs of Japan were canonized in 1862.
